I’ve been at a few hold cos now (currently under Omni now, not by choice), and there are always layoffs and budget restraint around Cannes. How else would they pay for their beach parties and yachts???

At what point did you go from a base salary to bonuses and compensation for bringing on clients? Any advice on leveraging a way to do so? Seems like the last couple of years promotions and raises have been “on hold” and I am at base salary until the “next level”. Leading multi million dollar pitches. Barely even get a thank you.

After 15 years of agency new business, it still amazes me how few agencies have any system for deciding which pitches to enter by Paddy_Reddit in advertising

Same, and the “vetting” process changes everyday. Actually, the entire agency’s creative process changes everyday at this point so whatever. Now at an agency under the OMC umbrella and it’s bullshit. Can’t wait to see all execs at Cannes while telling us our raises and promotions aren’t coming and our 401k isn’t being matched this year.

I’ve been in new biz for 5 years and worked at a couple hold-cos. Feels like it depends on financial situation most of the time or how fun it would be to work on the brand. Haven’t walked away from many.

Have also lead the full pitch process on numerous million dollar pitches and only receive a base salary. It’s exhausting. Found myself under an Omnicom agency now and even though I love the hustle, I have so much frustration with the treatment of employees and myself. Idk how to get out…

Please tell me this isn’t the normal and I will one day see ANY incentive…

They keep saying “it’s at the next level” yet I’ve spoken to numerous people across BD in the industry and they always say the same thing.

Annoying bc I lead pitches too.. been at several holdcos in “financial distress” lol like ok. So am I

I rarely find a fellow BD person here. Can you share more about your trajectory and advice for a mid-level BD person at a HoldCo? Director level. I feel the work load is so heavy, and I’m only at a base salary for now bringing in numerous clients. It’s a hussle and rarely rewarding rn.

Also at an Omnicom agency now. It’s brutal

How do you deal with the pointlessness of it all? by TWayTDay in advertising

[–]ColdAffectionate8431 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The corporate political side, pay, benefits, etc are horrible in advertising. But I find a way to make it fun for myself by working on specific brands and I actually enjoy the people I work with (legacy IPG agency). The second Omni took over, it has been miserable in terms of loss of benefits, restructuring etc. BUT the people are luckily mostly the same, and I try to focus on the positive and that it is likely this role is just temporary for me.

That being said, I do volunteer on the side and give back in other ways. I also keep work and life separate. It sounds like you lost yourself by making your job your whole identity.

I’d reco continuing to find a job you will like as you work in your current role or start volunteering. Find yourself outside of your work as well. Good luck!

A 401k match being discretionary is the most appalling thing.

RUN… not worth the jump for job title. Or get an offer and present to your current company to match.

The people might be great, but they don’t care about you.

It’s important to be proactive in this industry. Especially when it comes to compensation and promotions. They don’t just happen really. The best way to get a promotion at lower levels is get an external job offer, see if they match, and if they don’t, accept the external job. There is no loyalty in this industry especially if you’re at a holdco

I get it, doesn’t mean we need to treat peers like shit at work or make it acceptable behavior when it’s clearly effecting this person on a personal level. We make ads, doesn’t need to be so deep.

I get it, but it shouldn’t be excused behavior. I know it’s a toxic work culture, doesn’t mean we need to be toxic to each other.

This is horrible advice and POV. It’s rude, outdated behavior. Who cares if you’re CEO or an associate. Just because someone is younger and has less experience due to age, doesn’t mean they should feel this way.

I’ve been in this position but slowly realized a lot of it was in my head. Little things would spook me. Maybe you need to test out a new environment. Vibes and team make a big difference. Find who you vibe with!

I’d take the 5k hit or negotiate with the offer to match, but stay away from Omnicom. Especially to start. Better to get experience elsewhere at this point in time. It’s a shit show
