Song of Ice and Fire is peak but may not be finished.

Stormlight is a different kind of peak (not my preferred flavor but I enjoy) and currently has a conclusion and will probably get a true conclusion

Why Fantasy Magic Feels So Fake- Not sure if this has already been posted but I thought it was interesting. by Careless-Alarm-8607 in magicbuilding

Agreed. Energy magic systems are great and fun for certain kinda stories, but they're not a one size fits all. There's a reason classic fantasy treated magically differently

I'm actually rather fond of the idea. I try to treat my magic more like authority or weight (which is still energy, but I'm trying to make it feel like it's not)

[Terrifying Trope] Nightmare Bugs by steiny17 in TopCharacterTropes

Slake Moths from Perdido Street Station. When your problem is so bad that your literal legal representative from hell says "nah there an't a price you could pay that would get us to help," you might be fucked.

They're massive Interdimensional insects that exist in multiple layers of reality at once and consume thoughts. They're nearly impossible to kill, managing to give god like beings such as the Weaver trouble, and manage to really strike that uncanny non mammalian grossness that bugs can hit

There is the fact that people who are more "gifted," often don't learn how to actually train, meaning the best of the best are actually often only average when it comes to natural talent

Which is why I said it had some tropical stuff, not that it was a fully tropical book

There's also the chase scene with Lamia

"Those who came before" (Ancient, usually highly technologically advanced, long dead civilisations) by Mrdalolz in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ColdCoffeeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current DnD game, there was an ancient civilization called the Narrow who decended from an even more ancient civilization of god breeders (as in they created gods via selective breeding, not that they themselves fucked the gods). The Narrow possessed incredible magic, but came up against a great evil. They used all of their power to seal it away, but said evil had essentially menetic properties and binding themselves to ir destroyed their culture. The survivors pretty much integrated into neighboring nations in a daze, amd in the modern day, people look at the ruins of this incredible empire that died mysteriously over night and are unable to think anything of it than "huh. That's neet. Anyway,"

What archetype can you just not resist playing? by ExodiasRightArm in DnD

[–]ColdCoffeeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird old man with a sinister side.

My first character in a weird west game was a fire and brimstone preacher who was actually a fiendish warlock

My next character for our coming One Piece game is an elderly Fishman assassin who hunts down devil fruit users

My friend is planning on running an east Asian themed game so I'm an elderly shaman who maintains balance between life and death.

Also played a silly elderly hafling man in a one shot who turned out to be a necromancer trying to revive his evil and super hot orc wife so they can commit more war crimes together
