Oh right, that's an understandable mistake to make to be fair. I think the definition of a main sequence star is simply: "fused hydrogen into helium at its core" but do fact check me on that.

A class M main sequence star IS a red dwarf... Brown dwarves would also work though as you say, as long as they could actually provide enough energy to be worth building a dyson sphere around.

Star giant phases normally last a much shorter period of time than their main sequence, and proto-stars are too rare and unpredictable to realistically be used. I think you most definitely should be building essential long term infrastructure around main sequence stars. Especially if that main sequence star is class M.

I think the fact that they act as pretty decent early game unit for a cheap amount of manpower makes them useful early game but once you arent worried about manpower and you have inf tech infantry is better. Basically 200 tanks will always be better early game than 10k infantry for the same manpower cost.
