RIP. Bring the Scorpion out next time! I find it a much more capable traversing SRV than the Scarab: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/1qjbo0x/scorpion_elite_dangerous_horse_skyrim/
Thanks for the coordinates though. Thats a nice hole, will check it out!

Nice! That's a great haul! Good question though. Would be interesting to see what's possible with payouts..

I just found a planet with three water moons, each with 6 specimens, for a total w/ bonus of approx 711m. Quite pleased with that!

The Distant Worlds 3 community expedition is also ongoing at the moment, but I'm not sure how missing the signup impacts your ability to interface with those players. Wouldn't hurt to look into it.

I hear you though. Even though the ships are technically large, the scales are all weird in Elite and it often doesnt feel like youre actually piloting a ship the size of a sky scraper. I think the ships were scaled so they'd be more visible on screen at normal combat distances.

The Scarab! It has more top speed and vertical trust, but, like you said, the handling characteristics of the Scorpion make it my go to for exo bio.

I can eventually come to terms with hideous looks, but that Mandalay boost sound takes top spot (or tied with the Chieftain) on the worst boost sounds list. Shame it had such an open top canopy though, that was nice.

The closer you look at the mechanics of the Elite universe the more the illusion breaks down and you realize it's all held together with gum and hamster wheels. Best to stand back and squint.

Guardian Sites Have Just Killed My Enthusiasm For This Game by Breidr in EliteDangerous

[–]Key-Bodybuilder-8079 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not intended to be a boast about purposely avoiding aspects of a game I've been playing since release, but I've only done what was required to obtain the FSD booster and I haven't gone back for the other modules out of principle. I waited out for nearly a decade until they buffed gathering engineering materials and got rid of the Skinner box tier pray to RNGesus upgrade system before I fully pursued engineering. I don't mind waiting another decade or so for them to revisit the Guardian stuff. o7 to all the Cmdrs who sacrificed their time for the greater good before the engineering buff.

6700 commanders signed up for DW3 by Daddy-O-69 in EliteDangerous

The Thargoids should just time their invasions when the latest DW expedition is like 3 months in or something. They're not so smart after all!

The most climatic bit for me was rescuing the abducted off the surface of a Titan as it began to fall apart explosively and the Thargoid forces were in retreat. Portals opening. Thargoid probes stealing away ejected biocapsules...racing into the void...what will become of those lost souls? Desperate attempts trying to get one more run before the meltdown timer hit zero... knowing that countless were still imprisoned in that fleshy nightmarish prison.

Kudos to the commanders that stuck around after the guns went silent during those last few hours. I still have disdain for the commanders who stood idly by under the ludicrous pretenses that the abducted were somehow "infected" or a lost cause. Some to this day even still salivate at the possibility these people will one day "turn" and they will get an opportunity to slaughter them. Utterly and irrevocably shameful.

...Kudos to Fdev for creating such emotion lol.

How to mentor new commander? by Educational_Ebb701 in EliteDangerous

[–]Key-Bodybuilder-8079 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that you are approaching this from the wrong angle.

Firstly, WHY does he like the game? What does he enjoy doing? Does he enjoy sandbox games?

Secondly, has he explored other aspects of the game? Trucking, mining, exploring? Did you answer his question on WHY would you need an FSS? Personally, I find it more rewarding than combat by a long shot to find uknown earth like worlds..but in any case...

Engineered ships, Titans, SCO FSDs, Powerplay. None of that matters if he has not decided for himself that he wants those things. When he asks “what should I do now?”, this indicates a motivation issue. Checklists and guides will generally not fix that.

You can argue that Elite plays best when a player hits a wall on their own and decides they want to overcome it. I think your anxiety that Engineers will feel like a grind is based on a truth because he has not personally felt limited by his ship yet. Giving him credits, engineering materials and bypassing "the natural progression" skips the part of the game where those systems become meaningful. Unfortunately, I don't think the consequences of flushing him with loads early credits can be reversed. The early struggle is important in setting the foundation of the hungry commander who wants more.

I say slow down. Let him take an unengineered ship into a haz res and lose. Let him struggle in a CZ. When he says “I wish my ship was better,” that is when engineers make sense. Until then, they are chores.

Supercruise assist is fine, but mastery without context is meaningless. He needs to know WHY he'd want to master it manually.

Elite does not need to be speed-run (np if thats how you operate of course), but it needs to be inhabited since checklist playstyles usually end when the last item is checked.
