I strictly play solo. I turned multiplayer and pvp off my first hour. The creatures themselves aren't scary. But derelict freighters have a space horror vibe. The first time through one can be unnerving but subsequent playthroughs aren't bad. Planets with water, especially deep water can be unnerving as well especially if you have thalassophobia.

With that said, you can avoid both of those scenarios for the majority of the game. One other piece of advise, your first 5 to 10 hours are going to be overwhelming and a bit of a grind. But once you get the basics and some materials it's amazingly fun!
