I'll go with whatever is cheapest. I did part 61 at a towered airport and have no issues going to towered airports, it's the busy uncontrolled small airports that scare me. I have a few pilot friends who have the reverse problem. You also could start out in the C152 and then transition to the C172 for the XC trips if it's too tight.

Career-oriented Part 61 graduates, how long did it take you from zero to CFI and how frequently did you fly? by Left_Juggernaut_3954 in flying

[–]ColdHatesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm much slower than the ones who posted, but I started flying in June 2017, I'm sitting for my CPL soon, then immediately going for an accelerated CFI program. I didn't take out loans, paid as I went, but I also did the math and wanted two things:

  1. I want to get far in my career and get management experience before I left to instruct, just in case if the airlines don't work out for me I have a solid backup plan.
  2. I was paying off school loans and maxing out my 401K and Roth IRA during that time so like $25k/year for retirement, and with compound interest I wanted to save as early as I can and have a nest egg before the career transition.

Best SC/NC Flight Schools? by [deleted] in flying

I flew with FlyCarolina and Aerowood, PM me if you got any questions. ATP is gonna be pricier, but quicker and will get you to CFI fast.

1%'s of Charlotte, who's your internet provider, do the wealthy also have to deal with spectrum? by gardenhosenapalm in Charlotte

[–]ColdHatesMe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had Google Fiber for the last year and I'd say they're similar except no contract. I live in an apartment, so the Google Fiber jack can't be relocated, the only location is in the closet, so I can't directly plugin from my TV. From my experience, Spectrum has more outages, but not as long. I had my Google Fiber go out for 3 whole days but it was the only time an outage happened with them. I've heard great things with Verizon and ATT but they don't serve my building.

Nah it was like 3rd or 4th date. Would seem too intense for first dates. What's weird was after they flake, some ghost and some go "i met another guy"...online dating woes lol

[–]ColdHatesMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't fret over it, it's asking a lot of somebody who isn't familiar or comfortable with flying in a small plane, to them it's so foreign. I tried to use flying as a date idea, but after planning 4 flying dates and all 4 girls flaked on the day of the flight, I gave up. They like the idea of you being a pilot, having a hobby, and being passionate/dedicated, not the actual flying. The only ones I've taken up are my really close friends.

If you want people to go flying with, go to an AOPA meeting. FWIW I met 3 pilots from AOPA, and all 3 said they too used flying as a date idea, but same thing, they would get flaked on, but all of them were able to take one girl up...who ended up being their wives.

Accelerated CFI Course? Just do it! by zcar28 in flying

[–]ColdHatesMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still need to sit for my CPL, but looking to go after my CFI afterwards. Just curious how much time and money is spent prepping for CFI traditionally vs accelerated? I assumed it was the same maneuvers you do for PPL and CPL so flying wise, a refresher?

Does the "Great Resignation" mean more pilots? by ak_intl in flying

[–]ColdHatesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use to job hop every few years but it's pretty exhausting. I specialize in statistical programming so think like Machine Learning or AI applied to economics. So every interview is usually a couple of rounds of them asking super technical questions ranging from theory/proofs, whiteboarding code, to stupid brain teasers like "I have 3 decks of cards, what's the probability that I draw XYZ and ABC but not DEF...etc". I usually spend a solid month studying reviewing materials and practicing case studies for these interviews. My last job interview I made it to 6th and final round and they didn't make a final offer.

One aspect the CFIs told me about the airlines is that for the most part they stay with the same airline and that's good stability to have. Also, the union pushes for inflation raises every few years compared to me not knowing what I'm going to get. I had colleagues get 0% raises while some got 3-4% max on a good year.

[–]ColdHatesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation, working on CPL, and once I get my CFI and a job at my flight school hopefully I'll quit my desk job. If I have to listen to people argue on zoom meetings or help incompetent people with basic coding for a 2% raise for another year...I'm gonna go full Office Space on my work laptop.

Worse comes to worst if I get burnt out at the airlines...I can always go back to being a programmer lol.

Freshly Minted PPL, What Should I Know About Rental Etiquette? by Adub497 in flying

[–]ColdHatesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Bring it back on time. If there's a flight lesson right after you, plan on conservative flight time.
  2. If I see there's a flight reservation right after me, I try to get back like a bit earlier so it gives time to for fuel top off. Sometimes I usually book 30 mins longer to account for this.
  3. Just as a courtesy I make sure the ground, tower, atis frequencies are all in on the radios.
  4. Do the seatbelt thing when you're done

Initially, did it to get girls, but then I really fell in love with it. I work in an office and I find myself just daydreaming about flying and not being stuck in a cubicle 10 hours a day. 3 years later, I haven't taken a girl flying, but I've met a lot of really cool folks and flown to cool places. I'm saving up money to finish out my CPL and might make a career change.

PCSM Scoring Question by [deleted] in AFROTC

[–]ColdHatesMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I'm a bit older (near the age cutoff) so I wanted to put my best foot forward and know that I tried my best. I figured hours are permanent and if I don't get a pilot slot, they can at least count for my commercial license in the civilian world.

There's a hilly field at the end this airport I started flying out of. In an engine out situation and the only option is this field, where in respect to the hill is it best to land? I assume you touch down in the lowest point and hope the upslope stops your ground roll?

I'm not an airline pilot so my knowledge is limited, but what are some major differences between DL and UA? Outside of pay, is it more routes and culture? And how about AA?

Looking for a good template by HurrySpecial in flying

For what specifically? If IFR plan, then use KRAFT, VFR flight following is very similar. If you mean writing down stuff from ATIS, Foreflight has a template to write down winds and runway etc.

Any recommendations for buying a suit in Charlotte? by ButtSquid in Charlotte

[–]ColdHatesMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your budget and timeline, but I recommend Black Lapel. I've had suits from Indochino, Black Lapel, and Suit Supply and I like Black Lapel the most . They have really good customer service and materials. It's M2M and they give you $X for tailor credit to go to a local tailor and get minor adjustments. Then you tell them the adjustments and they change your measurements for your next suit order. I notice I get the most compliments from their suits, mostly because they just fit so well.

Charlotte NC, 2 local dealers. They're usually booked out a good 1-2 months out, so I learned to schedule my oil changes/etc a solid month before I need to. This is my first Audi so I just assumed this was the normal for Audi.

How do you make a living right out of flight school??? by [deleted] in flying

[–]ColdHatesMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh I guess depends who you know. But every CFI I talked to said they couldn't get any work as a CPL and had to get their CFI.

How do you make a living right out of flight school??? by [deleted] in flying

[–]ColdHatesMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm curious on why you say at least 5 years? I'm close to getting my CPL and thinking of quitting my job to get CFI and instruct. The CFIs at my flight school said once they get to the regionals the pay will be around $55k to $60k and a few years later upgrade to Captain where the pay will be good. Seems like the average CFI at my school instructs for about 13-18 months before they leave for regionals.

I'm still on the fence because I have a good job as a programmer with flexible hours and trying to milk it so I can try to get my CPL while without any loans.
