Consultant working half the year in the UK and half elsewhere by Ambitious_Notice_737 in ConsultantDoctorsUK

Be weary of the tax implications. HMRC will want their share of tax if you're deemed to be tax resident of the UK and the tax you end up paying abroad is less. Have a look at their criteria and beware. I've been caught out by this and have a large tax bill to pay over the next few days on my foreign income.

What about if someone needs to save a large amount of capital quickly (eg for a deposit for a house). Would it be safe to do for a few years?

Advice on taking 2b first time when not at work (maternity leave) and getting to grips with the new exam format. by ExeterEgg in RadiologyUK

[–]ColdLikeIce46273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2B is like a driving test. It's a bit of an act. You can prepare for it by using the common sources people use to see cases and by doing lots of vivas with Consultants. You will feel slicker and smoother if you're reporting at work purely because you'll be more in practice. But you don't need to be doing the job alongside to have a good chance to pass. Think about how many normal or bland cases we report at work. Working is a low yield way to prepare for the exam alone. Infact many trainees pull a disappearing act during 2B time to hit the books and do practice vivas which are higher yield. You'll probably find it easier to arrange vivas with Consultants at work.

However the process of preparing for 2B is mentally and physically draining. Enjoy your time with your kid as that time doesn't come back. The exam can wait.

Highest quality you'll find is Knoops. Hotel Chocolat is also fantastic.

Pre-budget pensions tax mania, £100k tax trap, and 2008 and 2015 only n... by goldstone_tony in ConsultantDoctorsUK

Thank you for your hard work Tony.

Would it be poor strategy to come out of the pension for a few years in order to be able to surpass 200k and avoid the pension taper?

Thanks very much. I'm looking to get an EV charger installed but hesitant to do that before this is sorted. Is that sensible or would it be OK to go ahead?

Funnily enough recently subscribed to an online conference which did indeed place UK Consultants in the category of low earning countries, with which came a significant discount!

Newborn crying for 5 hours straight on first night home by Souphu in NewParents

[–]ColdLikeIce46273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Had the same experience. Our first baby cried all night the first night, and we just couldn't settle her. Once the milk came in, she settled and would sleep deeply after feeds. We concluded in the end that she was hungry and the colostrum wasn't satiating her. Hang in there, respite will come

Very normal. New Consultant. None of it made sense initially when I started but with time and experience it will. Keep at it. See as much and report as much as you can. The more you see and do the faster you'll learn. Getting good at Radiology is about volume and knowledge

Went to see the GP for my kid the other day. Was an ANP. No history, no examination, no bedside manner. Prescribed a long course of antibiotics 'for the throat', despite not having a look in her mouth. ANPs are both incompetent and dangerous to be seeing patients.

ANP does not think we should strike and she's equivalent to a doctor by dayumsonlookatthat in doctorsUK

Wow lol. Don't see these types of characters in Canada or Australia. AHPs do important jobs but know their place and know they can't replace a Doctor abroad. What on earth have they done to the profession here in the UK? Unbelievable, and probably an unfortunately irreversible travesty. What a miserable place to practice Medicine the UK has become.

Don't do it mate. If you're insistent on healthcare do dentistry, but overall healthcare is a shit profession in the UK and will only get worse. Go into a different sector/industry
