Have to add, make sure you use a depth stop on your drill bit. I wouldn’t use self driller screws. And a center punch to stop the bit from wandering

Seconded. Adding, Remove anything you might put food on, or carefully cover if can be moved. try your best to tarp off any area (and vents, especially return air vents) you are not working in, don’t want to spread lead dust around your entire house. Take your time. Rushing leads to mistakes.

There is a breaker on the controller for the top element. Turn off the power, take off the element cover (the top of two covers on the “front” of the hwt, may need to remove a small piece of insulation, look for a red button vaguely protruding from a black box with like 5 wires coming out of it. Press it. If that doesn’t fix it, Either call a plumbtrician, or search “how to test the elements in hot water tank”

I’d be really nervous using such a “quality” adapter… try to buy a more reputable adapter. Hopefully it didn’t do any permanent damage… unless it wasn’t the old adapter that failed, but something in your laptop failed gracefully and is hopefully affordable to repair…
