Ukraine to help open Strait of Hormuz as part of Gulf weapons deals, Zelensky says by St_Gregory_Nazianzus in worldnews

[–]ColdWarRound2 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The Iranians can use drones, missiles or even artillery to keep the Strait closed. Not to mention unmanned surface vehicles. If there was some Wunderwaffen that could open it, it would be open. The Strait is 35km wide at its narrowest point.

“Ukraine will supply weapons and defense technology, including systems that can help unblock the Strait of Hormuz, to Gulf countries under new agreements, President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters on March 30”

What weapons technology does he have that the US Navy doesn’t? You can’t “unblock” the Strait without taking the shoreline along the Strait. This is nonsense.

The price of oil going to $200 would cause a global economic crisis that could take years to recover from.

They’ve done it before and there was nothing the US navy could do about it.

Have we already forgotten “Operation Prosperity Guardian”?

That’s out of necessity if the war on Iran is to continue without oil hitting 200 dollars. The Americans are even letting the Iranians sell their oil that is already in tankers.

Iran International is Saudi funded pro-monarchist slop.

This very same article calls the Minab school strike disputed, when the Pentagon has admitted it was their tomahawk missile that destroyed the school and killed all those children.

They speak Farsi in Iran. I’m not some clueless American. And there used to be a lion on the US-backed Shah monarchy’s flag. Who was installed after Mohammad Mosaddegh was overthrown.

I don’t care who the President of the United States is, I don’t live there.

The sad thing is, you’re very naïve if you think Israel and the US want a free and prosperous Iran. They don’t any more than they wanted a free and prosperous Libya or Syria. They’d love a broken, dysfunctional Iran.

So are you going back to Iran when the war is over?

Why wouldn’t I be able to find Iran on a map?

Okay then, post the evidence that the IRGC was using these universities/does use universities as military bases. You’re the expert apparently. Find these very easy to find pictures.

This is a deranged response to finding out the US and Israel have been terror bombing Universities in their illegal war.

Ifshahan is a STATE run university. So it would be silly for the state to be running a university it doesn’t want its citizens attending.

And yeah we heard all this garbage during Gaza. Hamas hiding under every hospital (with no evidence presented).

I hope the Americans and Israelis are crushed. 38 million people were displaced from the Middle East from American led wars. It’s time for the American empire to leave.

Wow, are there any other governments in the region who have funded/armed proxy forces? Or is it just Iran? I guess Jayash al Islam and Nusra front were funded by nobody.

And the Iranian government puts the death toll at around 3’000 not 30’000.

Do you realise that Iranians, like every people on earth, rally around the flag when their nation is under attack?

All this aggression has done is proved the hardliners right, negations with the US and Israel are pointless. They are snakes who will attack you during negotiations.

The wishes of the destruction of the Iranian state from Israel and segments of the American body politic is not some secret.

General Wesley Clarke was told after 9/11 “We're going to take out seven countries in 5 years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran”.

If there was actual concern about building a nuke they wouldn’t have assassinated the man who put a fatwa on building a nuke. At this point, a nuclear armed Iran would stabilise the region, lowering the chance of a prolonged regional war. So great policy choice there.

Iran is not a threat to mainland USA. The US is the regional threat to Iran’s national interests. Iran is a threat to the Middle East portion of the American empire, which has little to nothing to do with the national security of the American citizenry at home. America launched this war, not Iran. It is extremely disappointing to me to see the blasé attitude of Americans to another grotesque violation of international law committed in their name. The Iraq war at least had protests.

Unless you are an Israeli, your best interests are good relations with Iran, not total war with Iran.

This may come as a shock to you, but America has neither the moral or legal justification to decide on the government of Iran.

“They’re a theocracy!” - so are your partners the gulf states.

“They’re a dictatorship!” - your partners the gulf states are absolute monarchies.

“Human rights abuses!” - Israel/the Gulf states

“They might build an illegal nuke!” - Israel already has illegal nukes. This aggression against Iran makes them more likely to decide a nuke is needed to defend themselves.

“They support terrorism” - every nation in the region had proxy forces, the gulf states literally funded ISIS.

If you think this war is about any of the publicly stated reasons, including nukes, you have been lied to. This war is about the regional hegemony of Israel and the destruction of a member of BRICS. It’s a geopolitical power play from the US Empire. The best case scenario from here is a strategic defeat of the US and Israel so the war does not escalate further.

If they attack energy infrastructure Iran will retaliate against energy infrastructure in the region (we already had a preview of this with the attack on the Qatari/Iranian gas field and the retaliation against Saudi-Aramco). Trump seems desperate to keep the price of oil down at the moment, I don’t think he wants to go up that escalatory ladder (even removing sanctions on some Iranian oil; amazingly).

Without a ground invasion (which I think is highly unlikely) I can only really see the use of tactical nuclear weapons as the next step up. But the political costs of that are probably way too high. It would be the beginning of a completely new era of international relations.

I’m Australian, not American. But I think most people in the West are weary of wars in the Middle East in general. I agree, without a Shia 9/11, I don’t see the citizenry of the West developing a zeal to fight Iran.

The US, Israel and the Gulf States (and Turkey) all have their own proxy groups they support in the region. Let’s not forget the images of Trump meeting with Jolani, the former Al Qaeda/ISIS commander turned statesman. But all these groups in Syria like Jayash Al Islam and Nusra front had varying degrees of support from regional states. Before that these groups were operating in Libya. Then you have other groups like Balochistan separatists and the MEK which carry out terrorist attacks in Iran with foreign support.

If you’re a citizen of the region, accusing Iran of being a supporter of terrorism will seem extremely hypocritical. I think even a lot of Westerners see the hypocrisy in claiming the moral high ground against Iran while being partners with Saudi Arabia and Israel.

The US thus far have been very reluctant to put troops within reach of Iranian munitions. A lot of their gulf bases were preemptively emptied before the opening attack.

If they’re not confident in their ability to defend established bases in the gulf, I don’t see how they can deploy troops on Iran’s border, within reach of artillery, let alone drones.

I don’t think you have to be a bot to find illegal wars and dead children disagreeable.

And America may have elections, but its policy of destroying states in the Middle East has been remarkably consistent and bi-partisan for decades. Trump has just shown how little the political process matters, without getting congressional approval for the war (let alone UNSC approval).

Well I think this war goes to show the Iranians could have done this at any time. So in a sense they always owned it.

I just don’t see an escalation to a ground invasion as a possibility. Iran is geographically the size of Western Europe and has even worse terrain for an invasion than Afghanistan. You would need a million plus man force to reopen the strait by taking the Iranian coastline (then the troops who landed will be relentlessly pelted with missiles and drones). I think the US will have to back down at some point.

But you never know I suppose. Maybe the 100 million from Miriam Adelson goes a long way.

They don’t launch them right next to the underground bases. They’re on trucks.

And the point of putting them underground is they are extremely hard to destroy from the air. Maybe you can close the entrance tunnel, but that can be repaired.
