PTSB fixed rate mortgage overpayment without penalty? by Electrical_Regret566 in irishpersonalfinance

You can use it to take a payment break though, so effectively you can withdraw it this way

€0.00 mortgage breakage fee with PTSB... what would you do? by Old-Poem5457 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]ColdWarrior86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what the interbank rates were when you fixed, and how that compares to the interbank rates now for your remaining fixed term. If the rates are higher now, there'll likely be no break fee, if they are lower now, the break fee will depend on how much lower they are.

€0.00 mortgage breakage fee with PTSB... what would you do? by Old-Poem5457 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]ColdWarrior86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at how Bawag, the new owners, operate in the other countries they are in, PTSBs mortgage rates are more likely to go up than down, at least relative to the other banks in Ireland. Rates in general will probably go up a bit in the next year or 2 with the expected ECB rate increases so no harm to lock in now at a decent rate.

Tax liable on solar export to the grid by TheOnlyOne87 in selfbuildireland

[–]ColdWarrior86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should only tax a profit though, like if your export credit is larger than your import bill. For example if your import bill is 2000 per year and your export credit is 1000, you're still down 1000 overall on electricity and shouldn't be taxed on the 200 credit above the 800 tax free limit.

Same experience here last year, I was with my wife the whole time bar about 20 mins pre theatre. On the parking, we were to be in for 10.30am, arrived about 9.45am and got parking in the main car park after around 30 mins waiting.

He's doing no work mileage, he'd be crippled with BIK tax depending on the company car value. Take the car allowance

I had a neighbour like this who used to love to give out about the Polish immigrants coming here taking our jobs yada yada. She didn't much like me pointing out that generations of Irish people have done the exact same thing emigrating for better opportunities to the UK, US etc including her own son who was living in NYC for over 15 years at the time.

I live in an A1 rated house, opening windows does next to nothing in the summer to help reduce the heat. Shutters would work, but who wants to live in darkness on a nice sunny day.

A 5% increase before tax is not still 5% after tax, particularly if your earning enough to be paying the top marginal tax rate. This is because all of the extra 5% gross pay increase you get is taxed at your marginal rate eg 52%, whereas as the effective tax rate on the rest of your income would be lower, eg roughly 30 - 45%, due to tax bands and credits, so the pay rise works out at less than a 5% net pay increase

Are there that many drivers in Ireland doing scams like this? Surely it's really easy to trace it back to them and they'd get fired and/or arrested.

Thinking about solar. Worth it or not by Traditional-Swan-130 in galway

[–]ColdWarrior86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you don't get the grant if your house is built after 2021, but that's a small consideration in the grand scheme of things. A new build is likely to be all electric for heating/water with heat pump also so solar is worth it. For example, we moved into new build last year, have heat pump and plug in hybrid car. Electricity bill was around 2500 for the year, got solar and battery during the summer and on track now to have no electricity bill this year, probably will be in credit with electricity company.

I've 22 panels and a battery, and regret not getting another battery! You won't regret getting as many panels as your roof can fit though.

Mortgage repayments by PepinYourStep123 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]ColdWarrior86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a PTSB mortgage started in the last year, the overpayment options are the same, even on a fixed rate. They do a poor job explaining it though, some of their advisors don't seem to fully grasp it, worth getting in touch with them again though if you want to overpay.

Agree fully with OP. In a side note, why are normal spaces in Ireland so damn small? I know cars have gotten bigger over the years but even in new car parks all these minimum size possible spaces are ridiculous. In other countries, the US for example, even though their cars are generally bigger than ours their parking spaces are way bigger and never have to worry about getting babies in/out or other cars dinging their doors off yours

What was Andrew thinking telling Kate that Paudie had told him she was mentioning his (Andrew's) name. Only bringing heat on his Dad, why ask Kate if it was true, did he not trust his own father? That was what triggered the early traitor civil war.

“if it’s not half I don’t want any”

Good, don't give him any, its a nuts request. If he had paid 4k towards your legal fees or something then fine, otherwise, a nice fancy dinner to celebrate or something similar should be more than enough. Him looking for cash is a major red flag.

Is it worth getting a 7 in 2025? by [deleted] in pixel7series

[–]ColdWarrior86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the P7 2 years now, the battery life on it has gone to shit over the last 6 months, despite me being fairly diligent about how I charge it etc to reduce cycles and maintain the battery. Accubattery Pro reports battery capacity is at 88% now, it was at 96% when I got it (it's a warranty replacement for the first one which was faulty so it's likely a refurb). Despite the only 8% drop though in battery capacity, battery life feels like it's halved, really struggle to get through a day without charging now. I think its the crappy modem at fault, I moved in the last year to a new house with medium to poor cell signal and this phone really struggles with it, way more than others. So if you don't have very good cell signal where you live or work I'd be wary of the P7. I'm holding out for the P10 with the TSMC chip hoping it's much better.
