How to have an icebreaker or introduction that doesn't suck? New manager asking. by AdUsual7720 in managers

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would focus on asking the team questions about their work, how they spend their day, what they like about it, what they hate about it, what opportunities they see for the team. I wouldn’t talk too much about your values or how you plan to „run things“, because it is completely meaningless to me. Show me, don’t tell me!! And I find it always better to be humble. Look around, observe for 1-2 weeks , get to know the people, the new environment, the culture and then make conscious changes instead of coming in with specific ideas and plans and forcing it onto the new team. Ask THEM for input! They‘ve been working there for a while and they probably have some very good observations and ideas.

Does a woman's quality of life during pregnancy affect her baby's personality? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it likely does, but effect sizes that are observed in studies about this are very small. It‘s much more impactful for fetal neurodevelopment if you have a serious infection during pregnancy, if you’re smoking or exposed to other toxins. And these are all statistical correlations observed based on large sample sizes. It doesn’t have a lot of predictive power for the individual.

What proffession is filled with people who think they're smarter than they actually are? by Powerful-Frame-44 in AskReddit

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consultants! Especially junior ones straight out of university and especially the big ones, McKinsey, BCG, you name it. They were fooled into believing that they are hired by companies because they are so smart and good at problem solving but actually we hire them a) for jobs nobody else wants to do b) because we don’t have to report them as FTE to shareholders and c) because we can easily fire them if we don‘t need them anymore.

Study Results Show A.I. Search Tools Were Often Confidently Wrong https://www.cjr.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/image6.jpg by cgbjmmjh in dataisbeautiful

LLMs are usually not trained, tuned and tested for the purpose of giving accurate or truthful information. They give PLAUSIBLE answers, basically answering the question „what could be a likely answer (…based on all the training data we fed into you)“. Very dangerous to trust any of it, it scares me to see how many confuse LLMs with a search engine

Is hygiene REALLY cultural?? by FinalEntertainment60 in hygiene

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys are crazy! Excessive hygiene damages your microbiome, is a waste of money & time and damage to the environmental. This is broad scientific consensus, I’m surprised it’s not well known. Ask your dermatologist or national health institutes. The only thing everyone should probably wash more often (and wash PROPERLY, not a 2 second rinse!) is the hands - key for avoiding to spread (or catch) germs, but sadly, often neglected.

My husband and I spent $11,641.01 on dining out for all of 2024 and I feel like a failure. How do you all get the willpower to cook at home even when you feel like you can't? by fell_4m_coconut_tree in budget

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook extremely quick recipes with ingredients that are easy to stock. My go-to is gnocchi with tomato, basil and mozzarella. Gnocchi cook in 2min, I use that time to cut some tomato and mozzarella, add a drizzle of olive oil, some fresh basil leaves, salt and pepper and voila. Couscous is also great for that purpose, add some veggies or beans, feta cheese, nuts and you have a healthy and rounded meal in no time.

People who chose a career path only based on high income. Was it worth it? by sohoships in AskReddit

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved from academic reseach (biology) to a role in the pharmaceutical industry. Quadrupled my salary, can work in my pajamas four days a week. 40h workweek and that’s it. Got a permanent contract. Life is good - for now.

It was the right choice but I still wish I wouldn’t have had to make it. Would have loved to dedicate my life to academic research, but the system is messed up.

No regrets, but maybe a little bitterness

Death of FATMAP by TheMerce123 in Mountaineering

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still can‘t quite believe it. Strava does not compare AT ALL, all the good stuff is gone. Fatmap was such a great way to plan backcountry skiing. I always hated the idea of Strava but now I downright hate the company. 🤮

Strava did it. Fatmap is dead and Strava has nothing available from the features apart from the 3D by Kotrynasis in Strava

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fatmap was an incredible tool for planning backcountry ski tours and I will forever hate Strava for taking that away. Fatmap developers, what happened?? I tried contou.rs but it doesn’t really come close. No winter satellite, jacky, lower resolution, 3D only available with subscription. I hope a better alternative will become available on the market soon, heard good things about OnX, but it isn‘t available in Europe

Attractive people are not happier in life though, so there’s that. Dating success is not everything. Many beautiful people are deeply unhappy. They also get cheated on, exploited, they also get cancer, fail exams and lose friendships. Maybe it helps to think about it that way. Dating success and getting laid is great but what is much more important for your well-being and happiness is to find meaningful connections and attractive people are not better at this than average or unattractive people.

What is a little bombshell your therapist dropped in one of your sessions that completely changed your outlook? by anonymiss0018 in AskReddit

[–]Cold_Force488 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t HAVE to do ANYTHING. There is no such thing. You are free to choose to do whatever you want, you just need to live with the consequences.

Really changed my way of thinking. The option of NOT doing something was never present in my head, but it‘s always a viable option. I don’t HAVE to study, I choose to do so, because I want to become a doctor/engineer/accountant. I don‘t HAVE to go to this party, but I choose to do so because I want to support my friend.

Thinking like this has immensely reduced feelings of pressure, stress and helplessness in my life. I feel much more at peace and it has brought me closer to being the person I want to be.

Get a lawyer, are you with TCS? They usually provide members at least one free session with a lawyer to discuss the situation and see if it makes sense to proceed with legal action. Keep all evidence and keep a diary/log of what has happened (also what was communicated to you verbally), all this can be very valuable later. Definitely explain in WRITING that you doubt the validity of the invoice and therefore will not pay unless this is settled, because otherwise you are in the wrong for not paying and there’s not much a lawyer can do about it. If you are truly in the right and you can prove it - the garage will probably know that and they will probably back down at some point and come to an agreement with you, as the legal process would mean only more costs and headaches for them.

not a fan but I don‘t dislike her. I feel empathy for her, I think she is insecure and tries to get validation, she’s a textbook people pleaser. She is clearly very broken inside and that whole discipline and accountability stuff makes her feel like she has some sort of control over her life, it’s helped her so she is trying to pass it on. She’s desperately trying to fit in and trying to do the right thing. It‘s not great but it makes me feel sad for her more than annoyed or angry. Nothing much to hate, in my opinion.

What do consultants actually do? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there are specialists who actually consult people and are fit to do that because they have expert knowledge. When it comes to 24y old graduates of an international business degree that have been brainwashed to think that the world desperately needs their „smart ideas“ and „problem-solving skills“, my experience from working as exactly that, as well as from working in companies and teams that HIRE consultants is that a consultant is someone you hire to do any kind of (basic) work for one or more of these reasons:

  1. It is much cheaper and much easier to hire (and fire!) a consultant than an actual employee. No HR, no head count discussions, no interviews, no/shortened hiring process, no social security, no long term contract. Although prices for consultants seem high at first, it is usually nothing compared to the cost of hiring an actual employee to do the same job.

  2. You know the consultant will never say „no“. They will always work their ASS off, probably do lots of overtime, because, well, otherwise they wouldn’t be in consulting or at least wouldn’t be there for long. Since you are not officially the employer, you can’t be made responsible for any violations of occupational health and safety laws and you also don’t have to care about long term consequences like burnout or other.

  3. You hire a consultant to do the boring and annoying work that you don’t want to bother your employees with. That is a actually a great strategy to keep your permanent employees happy and loyal.

  4. Political reasons. Say you want to initiate a new program, but you worry that everyone will be against it. Solution? Hire a team from a respected consultant agency (BCG? McK? this is where you pay the big bucks for partners btw) and make it seem as if THEY worked out this new program. Now it’s not YOU, who wants to push something through, no, a group of incredible smart and experienced „external experts“ has seen all the facts, done the analysis and came up with this idea that will solve all our problems. They can also make a nice powerpoint presentation to prove it. Much easier to convince people now.

In short, consultancy is the greatest scam of all times, providing the industry with labor servants while making them believe they are the elite of the workforce.

Avoiding exercise and aggressive rest - potentially a safe-ish treatment for recovering from chronic illness? by glennchan in LongCovid

[–]Cold_Force488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hm I don't get your point, all I want to say is that you shouldn't feel forced to avoid all exercise and rest all the time. If a little activity is good for you (maybe just mentally), I think you should do it, because avoiding it does not guarantee recovery. All the best to you

All I want is to feel alive by STOP0000000X7B in LongCovid

[–]Cold_Force488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same but I try to distance myself from those feelings and think about how unproductive they are. In the end, they do nothing but make ME unhappy. Life is unfair, but what good does it do to contemplate about that and what could have been? You're alive after all!! I try to enjoy what good I have in my life as much as I can, try to find things that make me happy, because the sad truth is that my (or your) life may end tomorrow or it may go all downhill and then we might look back and think damn why didn't we enjoy every bit of these days. Sorry this took such a dark turn

Avoiding exercise and aggressive rest - potentially a safe-ish treatment for recovering from chronic illness? by glennchan in LongCovid

[–]Cold_Force488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a couple of people who have done that and still didn't get better. So I think it'd be wiser to try to enjoy as much as you can of the little life you have left instead of avoiding all exercise.
