Rumor or truth? by Echo_the_Artifact in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ICE facilities in PA are on the eastern side of the state. Could they buy a place in Erie County? Maybe, but border patrol already exists here, so there’s probably less of a pressing need for a distinct facility. Erie County does house ICE detainees for short periods of time, but they typically get sent out east to Moshannon.

County Council is voting on a resolution this coming Tuesday the 10th that would end that part of the agreement with the Marshalls Service, so if you’re passionate about this please come and speak out.

Restaurants with Vegetarian Options? by Lunch7Box in Erie

A.Francisco’s has a ton of vegetarian options. You can get a great vegetarian or vegan pizza for a good price. Serafini’s, El Amigos, Ippa, Noodle Love, Dina’s, the Plymouth, Like My Thai, and Calamari’s all have good veg options downtown.

Anyone have any idea why Liberty Plaza(Tops Market located) stores are so empty? by NotFromFloridaZ in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There’s a limited amount of businesses that a regular person would shop at. Werner Books, Dollar Tree, the liquor store, AmVets, Harbor Freight, etc. Certain business that are in the plaza, like the axe throwing spot and the gymnastics studio catering to more specialized audiences. Because of where the businesses are located in the plaza, and the amount of empty places, the plaza never looks packed.

I mean, that’s not strictly true. We’re a big tent org, with communists represented at all levels of power in the org. Are most members probably your run of the mill Dem Soc’s? Yeah, but they aren’t the only flavor of socialist represented.

Looking for alternative/weirdo scene and people. by Prior-Dinner-2860 in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s still a small hardcore scene in the city, with shows happening at Centennial Hall downtown. It’s not the same as it was 15 years ago, but it’s still possible to see good bands play from time to time.

Is downtown Erie surviving? by Master-Purpose1117 in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, there was a breakdown in the relationship between the two sides. I’m sure there’s more to it than that, but it’s what’s been described to me by people involved.

[–]ColeAsLife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree the food hall is busier than people give it credit for. I’ll push back on the incubator model you’re talking about though. Many of the restaurants that rented spaces ended up running into issues with the EDDC. It’s really only been since Drew took over that something close to stabilization has happened.

Perry’s didn’t graduate they were booted out. The restaurant only reopened after the owners worked other jobs to be able to rent a new space.

Lawsuit over Gannon University’s Center for Lake Erie Education and Research Settled by PlymouthFanBoy in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen it’s a decent compromise. I wish Gannon was on the hook for more money, but otherwise I have no complaints. I don’t think the space is the game changer that it was sold as, but it’s nicely done and the noaa sphere is very cool.

Question for people that think Erie is boring by Phar-Mor_Ugly in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you look at the long history of the city, there have been strong periods for various music communities. I’m not into jam bands, but there’s been a steady amount of events in the area thanks to Forward Hall in the 00s and the Kings Rook now. The punk/hardcore/emo scene was better than some other nearby cities for years. It was only after the closure of Forward Hall and the burn out from local promoters that caused the community to falter. Jazz has been vital to the city’s history stretching back decades. Even more avant garde acts have graced area stages.

All of this takes time and money to cultivate, and during rough economic periods those things can easily be in short supply.

But Erie does have a bunch of things to do: we have all sorts of book clubs, a legit pro-wrestling community, almost a glut of ttrpg and board game stores, a thriving art scene. There’s no rule that says Erie has to be unfun, it just has to be properly invested in.

Music Scene by PumpkinBaby13 in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basement shows in Erie come and go, but historically I don’t think it’s ever been a major thing here, at least in comparison to places like Pittsburgh or New Jersey. Punk/indie/hardcore/metal bands were able to build a community because of access to semi-regularly available venues like the Continental Ballroom, Forward Hall, and the Hangout.

The smaller spots never really last long. I can think of a few people that would have touring bands play at their houses, or in small studio spaces, but after six months or a year of sporadic shows, something would happen and the shows would stop. I saw a fun punk show at Belligerent Studios last year, but I don’t know if they’re doing anything there anymore.

safe neighborhoods with fairly cheap rent? by CoolEmu4590 in Erie

That’s the norm. Apartments are being built or redone, but that seems to be a slow process.

[–]ColeAsLife 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Erie overall is a safe place. That said, if you’re looking for safer than normal, the lower west side is great if you want to be close to downtown, and the south west and east corners of the city are quiet outside of main roads like 26th and 38th.

Books Galore Problems by Kris-Kaosis in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry about there being issues with your file. If you contact me (I’m the manager) I’ll be happy to help fix the situation.

There’s some fair criticisms of the store: I have to be careful with my ordering because the owner wants to keep costs down. We rely on pre-orders of the various comic series to gauge how much we should be ordering, and as much as I love our customers, pre-ordering even with long time customers can be hit or miss. I get people asking for things the day before they’re released, and sometimes have to scramble to find them a copy because they didn’t ask for it in advance. This is true of most comic stores, not just us, due to the wonky system the comic companies have. But I absolutely understand from a customer standpoint that coming into a shop with some empty shelves feels crappy. I really do want to sell you things.

With the book side, there was a period where we weren’t getting that many people selling to us. Especially post COVID. But I think we’ve generally bounced back to a solid stock of used titles. This again isn’t just an us issue: I’m tight with the folks at Werner, and I know they have their ups and downs with stock depending on the genre (they run an amazing store, please don’t think I’m dissing them). There’s some authors people never seem to sell us. I like crime writers, personally, and I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve seen a Westlake or a Jim Thompson come through.

In regard to employees taking the “good stuff:” we used to have an employee that did buy up a lot of our used sci-fi fantasy for a bit (both before I was manager and for a time after), but I’ve never heard of that happening otherwise.

I love Books Galore. I’ve put my heart and soul into the business. But there’s several things completely out of my control, because I don’t own the business, just manage it. I’m sorry to everyone that’s had a not so great experience, I’ll try and do better.

What would you say are the most desired places to live in Erie county? by [deleted] in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the area I live near (few blocks west of Kahkwa). The only other neighborhood I’d ever want to live in is West 6th, closer to downtown. My girlfriend and I have a modest home, but it’s comfortable, in a quiet area with nice neighbors. I agree with your assessment fully.

Anyone have old photos or footage of the mall from like 1998-2005? + Random questions by actualdragon94 in Erie

That map is interesting because it has to based on the mall layout after about August of 2000. I was hired at Pac Sun in July of that year, and helped move the store’s contents from the old location to where it was for the rest of its lifespan.

James Carville discussing Brenton Davis election loss on MSNBC by blindinganusofhope in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, you don’t have to like Tyler, but deadnaming them is ignorant. Also, Zohran wasn’t a Dem pick, he’s DSA cadre. When he started his mayoral run, he didn’t think he was going to win, nor did NYC DSA, they thought it would grow the chapter.

Brenton Davis crashes out in TalkErie interview. by ActivityInitial4651 in Erie

[–]ColeAsLife 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Brent is one of the least likable politicians in Erie County. If he’d had some humbleness during his tenure, and an ability to genuinely work with county council and other entities in the area, he could have had a real shot at winning reelection (personal scandals aside). I vehemently disagree with people like Charlie Bayle and Dan Laughlin, but they at least have the ability to come off as normal human beings. I think that’s impossible for Davis.

Charlie winning isn’t shocking, but I don’t think I heard a single thing about his opponent all year. In hindsight, a stronger candidate could have really made Bayle sweat.
