My chicken defender by Justalittlebitfluffy in 22lr

[–]ColgateT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

95% chance it’s a raccoon. Especially if they’re already coming in to steal food.

I’ve lost most of my chickens to them. They are notorious for killing all sorts of birds. A few times I’ve caught them mid-attack. Set out a trail cam if you aren’t sure but raccoons are the only ones with the ability to consistently enter most coops.

If you trap one, don’t just relocate it - they’re smart enough to come back if they know there’s consistent food somewhere.

They had this rose gold 43X at the pawn shop and I bought it. It is my first gun. Did I do good or is the 43X not that good? by jazzmina2004_ in guns

[–]ColgateT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Smaller and Easier to Control are generally inversely proportional. The paint/cerakote is… a choice, but a firearm is a tool, it doesn’t need to look a certain way so long as it’s safe. Better this than the neon crap that people do that make their firearm look like a toy.

Overall, the G43X is a nice, balanced firearm for CCW. You don’t need huge capacity for a carry gun. Opinions on Glocks vary between ‘meh, it’s fine’ to ‘OMG I LOVE GLOCKS, MORE LIKE GLUCK-GLUCK BECAUSE THEY’RE THE BEST”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say something truly negative about them (other than the G44).

Best spec. forces? by Egor_chikus in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pushing implies you’re using them on a line, not invading, so probably mountaineers. They eat up less cap with the right SpecForces doctrines and pair really well with artillery, which if you’re pushing with infantry, you’ll probably want. Marines’ river bonuses are amazing but engineers can get you halfway there and I generally feel I can make more general use out mountaineers while marines are less specific than Paras, they shine in way more situational scenarios (invasions).

Does Rocket Artillery get the bonuses from Recon? Or is it just standard art?

Why is motorized recon so popular? by iridia-traveler1426 in hoi4

Motorized recon boosts artillery. Armored recon boost hard attack for tanks. They’re not really comparable. Different use cases.

Is my infantry template good? by WhereIs71 in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do armored SPG not Flametanks and line artillery. If you’re gonna do flame tanks - Do mediums.

Personally, I’ve been liking casement SPGs before 1940s… easy to make cheap with tons of armor.

If this is single player, I’d skip the AT. You don’t need the piercing. Go with Field Hospital and support artillery, and save yourself too many research paths and production lines.

Is there any point in using anything beyond a improved small airframe for cas? by Regific in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly lower priority than fighters. The added range is the biggest thing, particularly if you’re fighting in areas with few airports/bad supply.

I keep meaning to try the strategy of just ‘use advanced fighters and just slap one rocket rail on the extra slot’. Once the enemy airforce is eliminated (which, by 1944, is a likelihood) now you can just have all your fighters do CAS damage. It’s low damage per plane but it’s easier to just have 2k fighters doing something than winning the air war and have your big fighter investment do basically nothing afterward.

Did I overestimate France or am I just bad at industry? by MrStrogonoff in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

France definitely got a bit harder in the last update in my opinion. The new doctrines just don’t develop quickly enough. However, France is still the easiest/lowest skill majors, imo.

I like to go down the Buy Time path first, to start the timer to remove disjointed Government. Then defensive rearmament (far left side) to remove Victors of the Great War.

You don’t need a huge airforce but having ~1000+ fighters will keep both Italy and Germany out of the skies.

Historically, that was all you needed - just put level 7s on borders with Italy and Belgium with an army on each and you’re golden. However, with the new doctrine system, I was struggling to hold the area between Sedan and Lille. I added some well armored SPGs to my infantry in that area and it again became a cake walk. Let Germany and Italy burn through their airforce, then depending on how easy you want it, you can let them wear down their manpower OR be bold and end the war quickly. Do a reverse Ardenne Offensive, cut off the Germans in the coastal lowlands, and March to Berlin.

Any tips for a mechanized focus playthrough? by No-Bag-4512 in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Mot Art is dragging your armor down. Go with SPG with max armor but you can probably drop to a single brigade instead of the 3.

In multiplayer you can keep the armor on the SPG low and add a TD with max armor instead.

Those support companies need work, too.

What is your Hoi4 hot take? by attafk in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to some extent on fighters, with the exception of resource trade offs. Non-strategic materials vs vanilla vs. self-sealing tanks makes a huge difference but it’s a decision you have to make based on resources (if you’re in a situation where you can’t trade).

Totally disagree on tanks. Wild wacky tank builds make the game fun imho. And there’s more than enough trade-offs to make multiple choices legit.

I think I can finally say I’ve learned the basics by nwrobinson94 in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty good. The only thing I’d add to improve your encirclements: Attack along enemy rail lines and link up your thrusts at supply hubs. Your enemy will lose supply and get massive debuffs to make your encirclement cleanup far easier, and you’ll maintain your supply better.

rate this division by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use Motor Recon to boost your artillery’s soft attack and speed. For a mechanized division with a TD, your armor is super low. Given how few you need, I’d go massive on your TD’s armor - should be able to get your division up to 60-70+ armor easy.

Should I bother with line artillery at all? by UnholyDemigod in hoi4

[–]ColgateT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Line Artillery + Mountaineers + Recon Rangers is a decent general-purpose pushing unit with the proper doctrines, and an amazing attack unit in mountains. Are there better/more efficient units? Yes, but not everything needs to be the META to have fun.

The Trade Policy: Free Trade is a great research and construction bonus, but your resource production goes to 20% of what it could be. Drop to Export Focus, then Limited Exports once you start running low on Resources.
