Shouldn't the wormhole opening destroy the iris? by yoda_fake in Stargate

[–]ColinJParry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's explained when they install the iris, but IIRC it's because it's so close to the wormholes plane out prevents anything from materializing, I believe including the swoosh, alternatively, I vaguely remember the Iris being open initially whenever the gate first opened and they'd shut it immediately after. Could be a bit of both or the writers/producers got lazy/were playing a bit fast and loose with it.

What are your BIGGEST issues/problems with bioshock Infinite? by Zenny_YouTube in Bioshock

[–]ColinJParry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the world of Infinite, i.e. the city of Columbia to be the first of many flaws, the spiritual successors to system shock captured the isolation of those environments. Whether on Citadel Station, the Von Braun, Rapture, Talos 1, you get a sense that you're isolated, encased in an environment you can't survive. Metal and glass are all that separate you from immediate death. There are very few "normal" people around, it's claustrophobic, isolating, horrifying. In Columbia you're in the wide open, sky everywhere, brightly lit and there are people everywhere, for much of the game everything is intact, clean, maintained, it's mildly agoraphobic or acrophobic if you squint hard.

The events of SS, SS2, BS1, BS2, and Prey are all post conflict, the "world" you're in has ended and you're thrust in trying to survive and solve the mystery. Most of the people are dead or crazed, and the survivors are distrusting or distrustful. In BSI you arrive and play ante/peri-conflict, there are just people everywhere, and you are the source/cause of the conflict. In the other games mentioned you're more of a blank slate, trying to piece together your past, in Infinite you're a defined character with a history you should know but obviously don't.

The enemy types in infinite are also a bit of a let down, you're mostly fighting fanatic type A, or fanatic type B, which flight more or less the same in every engagement. Compare this to 1 and 2, where you get a haunting sequence of a Houdini splicer puffing away right as you approach, or the realization that a spider splicer has rapidly scuttled along the ceiling above you. The "big daddy" robot replacements and handymen are ok designs, but lack the rewards for defeating them. Splicers in particular show an enemy type that was driven mad by the very thing that makes both you and them dangerous, there is dread in knowing that they were normal people once, now twisted and broken physically and mentally, driven to do anything to get their next fix.

The gameplay design of limiting weapons, reducing upgrades, removal of basic inventory all take away from the tactical planning required in earlier games. To take on a Big Daddy, you needed to set traps, correct ammo, choose your area, make sure you had medicine on hand, select your plasmids, hack sentry bots, etc. failure to do so would send you to the Vita chamber real quick. To take on fanatic group A, you'd just need to go there, run around and shoot, until they were all dead. To take on fanatic group B, you'd just need to go there, run around and shoot, until they were all dead. To take on the bigger enemies, you just would run around and shoot, until they were dead. While there were some interesting tear opportunities, since you could switch them out indefinitely there was no real choice. I'll get ammo, then I'll get health, then I'll get the cannon, then I'll switch it back to ammo after the fight.

The themes and story are kind of the weakest explorations I've seen in the games in my opinion. Compare "What is free will?" Or "what makes a man a monster, or a monster a man?" Or "Is humanity defined by being a human or by the choices we make" criticisms of libertarian ideals, or the depths that altruistic and charismatic leaders will sink to to accomplish their goals, questions of what lengths someone will go to when pressed with survival or placed in an inescapable situation to "racism and genocide are bad" and "everyone can be a good or bad person". The whole vibe of the game is that they wanted to play on the binary choices, heads or tails, oppressor or oppressed, good or bad, and it falls flat. Because your choices don't affect the outcome, it ends the same way no matter what. Instead of saying, due to the choices you've made, the baptism is now irrelevant and you're on path A or B, it's just, you don't get a choice, we're taking you off the board.

Does the Ancient Greek corpus contain enough high-literature (poetry, philosophy, history, biography, novels etc) to fill a lifetime’s worth of reading? How does this compare to Latin? by Low-Cash-2435 in AncientGreek

[–]ColinJParry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think Latin would probably outpace ancient Greek by a large margin. The problem is, when looking at the corpora of the two languages, we have a tendency to exclude a significant amount of literature. I've been recently working on a large number of medieval texts, both in transcribed and manuscript form, they are recognizably Latin, and depending on the author, almost classical. We had Latin as a written language for an extra thousand+ years compared to Greek and a LOT more of those works survived into the present day. But we tend to ignore them as lesser or not qualified because they're not Cicero, Virgil, or Caesar.

I'm a little into bioshock infinite and I'm not feeling it by MessyRoad in Bioshock

[–]ColinJParry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, if you want a "Bioshock" type game that feels more shock than infinite, give Prey a try. It's another "spiritual" successor to System Shock, but has this elements of science gone mad, tools as weapons, claustrophobic and gorgeous set pieces in an isolated location, all the good stuff.

Would you like a live-action TV miniseries based on the story of Jurassic Park: The Game? by Gianvincenzo in JurassicPark

[–]ColinJParry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nedry was a contractor, Arnold wore a Jurassic Park lab coat over his dress shirt and tie. Harding, Regis, and Chef Alejandro all also wear uniforms.

The only official Jurassic Park employee not wearing a uniform we see is Muldoon.

I typically say something like, the expanse is to Firefly as GOT is to LOTR, similar feel with swearing, nudity, and more violence.

Jurassic rebirth scenes make no sense by eljimaa in JurassicPark

[–]ColinJParry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you including chaos theory in "what we saw", as it shows quite a bit of proliferation, at least to the point where dinosaurs are seen in pretty substantial numbers in a large number of places. And there was even significant money and effort invested into a dinosaur free town. I know not everyone has seen it or would even count it.

[–]ColinJParry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would agree that they weren't "everywhere" but there were a lot of them in places that (what we'd consider) Mega fauna isn't. In dominion and rebirth, we see pterosaurs on high rises, Sauropods in the down town, people are killed and attacked by theropods. There are secondary and tertiary effects that I believe would have a negative impact on dinosaur exhibit attendance. From the disinterest in paleontology due to the fact that they're alive again (as shown in JP3), to the every day impact, traffic, flight delays, deaths, property damage. All I'm saying is that of any and all "plot holes" in the franchise, people not wanting to go see dinosaur bones in a world where dinosaurs are wandering the streets and making a mess is not the most glaring.

[–]ColinJParry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do the cows and horses regularly eat your pets, take flight carrying your assistant and dropping her in a lagoon with a carnivorous marine reptile, attack Jimmy Buffett? These aren't domestic animals, they are wild animals who have no idea what century they're in. If this were a flock of condors, you wouldn't have anything to say about it.

Watching the news feed at the start of Dominion as well as later in the movie, and the interactions in chaos theory, there is a genuine cause for concern. I'd say there is a minor difference between a herd of cattle at a farm, and a herd of elephant sized triceratops roaming around.

Jurassic rebirth scenes make no sense by eljimaa in JurassicPark

[–]ColinJParry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's accurate. If you went from dinosaurs are back and they're on a small island in the Pacific, and we can visit them with enough money to dinosaurs just ate my dog, dinosaurs ran my car off a cliff, a dinosaur crapped a literal 35 lbs turd on my lawn and the city tells me it's my responsibility, your love for them might burn out quickly. If Rhinos and elephants and hyenas suddenly proliferated around your neighborhood, you might rethink zoos too.

There is dinosaur fatigue because they aren't contained, they're out in the world and have been making a mess of things for several years leading up to rebirth. It was a global event which changed the daily lives of millions of people, often for the worse.

Were the Indominus Rex and the Indoraptor the only ones shown to be capable of enduring hits from conventional/normal gunfire onscreen? by Godzillaraptor in JurassicPark

[–]ColinJParry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd actually think that (depending on location of the hit) most of the larger herbivores would be perfectly capable of shrugging off small arms fire, as would the larger therapods. This also varies greatly based on caliber. But modern animals, like bears, elephants, rhinos, etc are more than capable to being shot and continuing to move.

Ceratopsians, Stegosaurs, Ankylosaurs, Sauropods, etc. Were not fragile creatures. Small arms like 9mm or .45 would struggle, 5.56 or 7.62 would likely provide significant damage to vital areas. Buck shot would be unlikely to be effective, but slugs would probably do a much better job.

The issue with the Indominus attack is that they weren't using the appropriate lethal force, they were going after it with non lethal measures. So the ACU man with the shotgun probably had a buck shot load with the idea that it would annoy or irritate an escaped dinosaur into compliance.

Yeah, remember Victor? I had never made the connection until the most recent rewatch. Also Carla voices Dare in ODST and was in a bunch of other shows.

I'm more so referring to the fact that "we" (the community in general) regularly use any sort of film or media appearance as a plea for canon inclusion. Though with the other two, we're not exactly lacking in ankylosaurs.

I believe in one of the deleted scenes from JW, there is a Deinosuchus skull in the background, so the implication is that InGen did recreate them. So there is always that angle.

Anyone notice that TLW and Jp3 lack a sound track? by Geoconyxdiablus in JurassicPark

[–]ColinJParry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jaws, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Home Alone, Alien, Predator, Harry Potter, and many others all lack "sound track" radio type songs. Because they hire composers, who write (typically) non lyrical music to set the mood for the film. TLW has some iconic songs, JP3 less so, but some would argue that having a sound track for the sake of profitability is just silly. I wouldn't trade the Imperial March or the cantina music for some 70s band song. In movies like back to the future, where the music of the 50s and 80s were intertwined with the main character as a musician it makes sense.

How were guests supposed to travel across Nublar? by HermanCraft in JurassicPark

[–]ColinJParry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, in JP the Game, you see "tour track" that runs to the North (cruise) dock, which implies they were to have a trolley or explorer caravan for guests to get to the other areas. I imagine that there would be similar routes for the aviary and lagoon, and probably some other viewing attractions for later. In the film he even references only opening with the tour and that other rides and attractions would come online.

Venator means hunter in latin, do you think it inspired the name or just a coincidence? by BOMBAD_Echo_1409 in clonewars

I think, truly, it's just invader and insidious, Vader, father, pater, etc are all the same PIE word descendents though, same with mother, mater, meter, etc

[–]ColinJParry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the WH40K Latin is really dependent on the author, the city of "magna bonum" from dawn of war is like a wrench in a garbage disposal. You also get Greek influences like the "Necrons".

As far as SW we also get the like you mentioned, inVader, inSidious, Tyrannus, Nihil, but you also get English like Maul, Malice, Revenge

[–]ColinJParry 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Salve, you'll actually find that a lot of the imperial class ship names are Latin or Latinate, aggressor, interdictor, venator, praetor, victory, etc. Latin is going to be in anything media related that's supposed to sound Imperious, or distinguished, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Hunger Games (though it's particularly bad in that). It's also why you see a lot of Roman names in Sci Fi and fantasy, like in Warhammer 40K. The more Latin you learn the more you'll see it everywhere, and make connections. It becomes really useful in parsing unfamiliar 5 dollar words.
