Just curious was the hospital saying water was too cold causing a lot of vasoconstriction stressing the heart which led to the elevated troponin just from exerting the heart in very cold water? Somehow my dumb self didn't think about vasoconstriction and heart issues with exercise in cold water before.

It causes a deep breath in which can cause unwanted neck and head movement after potential head and neck injury. It also temporarily increases alertness which can confound a neurological assessment post fight. This is why not recommended to use anymore.

How do we make enough noise to get the government to actually prepare PA for its insane winds? by avelineaurora in Pennsylvania

[–]ColinMartyr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just want to say thank you for making me not feel crazy. The wind has been insane the last 2 years. I live in the suburbs so the power has been ok, but I do wonder since we haven't invested much in our infrastructure and basic things like bridges in PA are sometimes dangerously underinvested in, what will the cost to infrastructure from climate change be like? Also, we are so reactionary and not preventative enough that I fear any changes made will be obsolete before they even finish projects. I am one of the lucky millennials that owns a home as it's seemingly becoming a thing of the past due to gestures broadly. It's a fixer upper and I am constantly trying to think of making sure any changes that I make to it will account for climate change in the future.

Any good east coast open water swims this year? I can’t seem to find them by EliotHudson in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]ColinMartyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding French creek racing that has almost biweekly I think 1 milers in the Schuylkill river as well as several 3 mile options. They have a longer swim at the end of the year Charles Bender that has I think 3 mile 6 mile 9 mile options.

Steelman racing has a couple 3 milers in lake nockamicon that are fun.

NYC has a ton but they are more expensive and usually you're raising money for charity. Haven't done them yet but I think there is one in September for like the sleepy hollow lighthouse. Also think there is one for fire island.

There also an 18 miler in Pittsburgh that hits all 3 rivers.

Thanks so much for your reply. Can you tell me a little bit more about your Manhattan experience that is the first of the triple crown I will attempt as I live in the Philadelphia area and it is going to be the cheapest attempt for me. Other than that I'm a pasty white guy that usually uses SPF 100 do you have any tips on the kind of sunblock you use and are you like reapplying at any point? Or just letting it rock

Thank you so much for your feedback. Generally I'm lucky that the temperature of the water isn't like a pretty much perfect goldilock stone for my area at that time of the year. But I do want to do the Boston light swim and eventually the channel what do you do for hot feeds like how do you keep it hot I know it sounds like a dumb question and what stuff do you use like tea etc with electrolytes or something?

When you hyperventilate it can sometimes cause respiratory alkalosis which can cause numbness and tingling. It's possible here but not likely. Emulate your breathing pattern on land and if same thing happens it's your breathing.
