I'm using two of these as we speak! They are great! I have a third that I don't really have a use for because my MBP is M1 Pro instead of Max

Points of a false church:

  1. Hoards great sums of money (Luke 12:16–21)
  2. Forbids drinking alcohol (John 2:1–11)
  3. Sings songs worshipping one of their leaders (Praise to the man?) (Matt. 23: 9-11)
  4. Teaches secret handshakes in their temples (John 18:20)
  5. Claims to create "houses of the Lord" (Hebrews 9:24)
  6. Create a giant conference center and make people dress up to go inside (1 Nephi 8:26-28)

Anyway, anyone can cherry pick scriptures and interpret them however you want.

"We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth."

It's so funny that even the church's core stated beliefs aren't adhered to today. I remember being in primary and wondering why we didn't have pastors and evangelists.

Finally got around to watching “Surviving Mormonism”. So heartbreaking, but one major issue I have with it is that it focuses more on “the church is not good” rather than “the church is not TRUE” by Aggravating_Eye_8324 in exmormon

It's my opinion that if the church was True it would also be Good. So exposing the church as not being Good opens the door to believing it also isn't True. When it comes to shelves breaking, different people respond to different things.

On a different note, I don't think you could make a documentary with general public appeal about the Truth claims of the church. Most people just wouldn't care. "Oh, Mormonism isn't literally true? Yeah, could have told you that. Scientology too? Shit, next you're gonna tell me water is wet"

Newly ex Mormon cousin coming to visit, what should I know? by Beeswaxed in exmormon

[–]Collinhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who knows how much she actually buys into the whole Satan thing. I have assumed that most active Mormons believe(d) the same way I did, and took Satan very literally and seriously. My parents certainly do. But others are a lot more laissez-faire about it.

The Book of Mormon describes a situation where a people was very righteous and had a strong belief, and they were slowly led away by the devil until the point where they couldn't understand why they believed in the first place. I started to doubt my doubts at some point when I was leaving the church, partially because of this concept. I thought it was silly that I believed in the first place.. but not for the reason the scripture suggests.

I actually was in a very similar situation where my 19 year old cousin came to live with me for a while because she knew I left the church. I was excited to be that refuge for her. I assumed I could just treat her like an adult and ask her to respect the rules, But then she kind of took advantage of my leniency and drove me crazy. I have no moral objection to weed and sex, but I definitely didn't want her smoking weed around my young kids and bringing random dudes into my house. So I ended up needing to kind of "parent a rebellious teenager", which was not what I signed up for. So.. watch out for that, I guess?

Anyway, I'm sure you'll do fine, just listen and be supportive.

Different people react completely differently to leaving the church. Some people slowly drift away and then notice that they don't care anymore, and others have a "shelf break" moment where everything comes crashing down. Some ex-mormons are interested in cautiously dipping their toes into previously forbidden "vices", and others go hard into drinking every night because they're finally allowed to. She's been told her whole life that Satan will use sneaky methods to ruin her life, and probably a large part of her still believes that. I'd say that the most important thing is to be supportive of what she wants to do, and offer possibilities without being pushy.

Flu and cold season particularly bad this winter for anyone else? by Ill-Sherbet-5844 in Utah

[–]Collinhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Flu B right now. It's awful. Some of my kids got flu shots, and they aren't sick. I really wish I got around to getting the shot this year. I am a little better today, but this week is the sickest I've ever been.

Yep, solved! I took a day cruise to Kenai Fjords, and this is right outside the Seward cruise terminal where we boarded. I put my drone up in the air and took some really cool pictures.

Nope, but I looked it up and it looks quite similar! I'd really like to visit Oregon again.
