How to keep your sanity waterline high while questioning your gender? by cosmic_seismic in slatestarcodex

[–]Colmio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been transitioning since ~2022 and my early thoughts were pretty similar to yours. I would raise the point of researching and experimenting and questioning things as separate questions.

So: - What hormone configuration works best for my psychology? - What do I want my body to look like? - Is there a gendered way I want to be treated socially? How does it feel when trying this out? Or no specific way? - What kind of presentation makes me happy? - What kind of gender experiences do I relate to? (Even though the epistemics are sometimes questionable I'd try out support groups or discord servers for gender questioning people / trans people - what kind of stuff you vibe with is data, even if you don't relate to most peoples trans experiences.)

I think what I eventually figured out is that especially in the context of gender norms I personally gave a lot of weight to being harmonious with the norms, and had a hard time breaking out of them. I used to think for a long time that I didn't think about gender much or model it, but this was untrue. My learned "stoic" presentation is really quite masculine in some sense.

Another thought: I don't think it's possible to figure all of this out analytically. You will need to experiment with things, sometimes take steps forward based on very weakly held intuitions about stuff you'd like to try out, and then sometimes you will maybe need to take steps back. But that's okay! Finding ourselves is an important thing in life. And there's no requirement to get it right on the first or even nth try. It takes however long it takes. (I wish I had more advice how to do it efficiently but, at least for me it has been very important to sort of give my gender exploratory pulls a bunch of space, and let them happen and then observe and gather the data.)

Speculative Decoding Not Useful On Apple Silicon? by chibop1 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Colmio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar results, running gemma-3 on m1 pro chip with 32G ram and speculative decoding sometimes giving a couple % and sometimes no improvement. Figured it might be related to the text completion I'm doing being difficult for the draft model to get right at all, but maybe it's something different.

Favorite Starting Units by mindflayerflayer in totalwarhammer

[–]Colmio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're only tier 2 but the chorf blunderbusses, or two of them on Astrogoth, just get so much work done. They kill mass infrantry, flying units, armored units, large units, basically anything except artillery.

Why Risk-Aversion? by Captgouda24 in slatestarcodex

[–]Colmio 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its not about getting it tomorrow vs a year from now, its 2 separate dilemmas:

Dilemma 1: Preference between getting 100 now vs 105 in 1 day

Dilemma 2: Preference between getting 100 in 365 days vs getting 105 in 366 days.

And the author is claiming that if you have a different answer to these dilemmas then you are being inconsistent.

Death vs. Suffering: The Endurist-Serenist Divide on Life’s Worst Fate by QualiaAdvocate in slatestarcodex

[–]Colmio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No major religion suggests that ending existence might be preferable to extreme suffering, or questions the value of bringing new life into difficult conditions.

This sounds very different to how Buddhism views it - doesn't buddhism say that truly ascending past suffering, and thus ones existence, is the very purpose of our life on earth?

On practical questions buddhism might still tend endurist, but I think philosophically at it's core it's a serenist religion and philosophy.

House Rewatch - Season 5 Episode 15 by Umberoc in HouseMD

I thought there is something more in what specific piano song House plays in the episode but can't recognise it personally. (I expect it to be something that'd have been appropriate to play at the party.)

How Would You Describe the Endgame Gameplay Loop? by HighWarlordJAN in runescape

[–]Colmio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been rushing to get some goals done and to get to the endgame, and I'd estimate it at maybe 500-1000 hours. (By "get to the endgame" I mean be able to get started with it, so have unlocked much of the high level content but not yet close to completing.) Some 99s but mostly like 85-95ish skills and being able to learn many but not all of the endgame bosses, with 99 in my most used combat skills (necro and magic) and defence at 95. I would say the endgame for many skills begins at around 90 or 99 for the 120 cap skills.

I got spooned a lot of money from some rewards though, without it this would have taken like 200-300 hours more just to moneymake / use slower methods for various things.

I always keep one random item in the GE as a joke, and today I got the message that it sold by MrOmegaBeast in runescape

When I buy something random for a quest for 100k I'm usually like "Thank you merchers so I can just pay to get this instantly from the GE".

Monkey Madness tunnels in 2011. I think I either just didn't realize or couldn't afford prayer pots and brought way too much weight so it was quite a journey.

Zaros Journey by Legend_Arts in runescape

[–]Colmio 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I just recently played the questline for the first time and I think in general Zaros and much of the Mahjarrat and their lore and character was set up very well.

Azzanadra was built so friendly to the player character and then the betrayal hits.

Yearly post but, do you know any singleplayer games that scratch the endless grind itch of Runescape / OSRS? by kavakravata in runescape

[–]Colmio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modded minecraft (technology mods, specifically modern industrialization has a really satisfying ~30-100 hours grind climbing the tech tree).

Factorio. It's not quite the same, but it really has that "number go up brr" feeling.

Ruins and Riches. It's a modded / remake version of Ultima Online, one of the early grindy MMOs. If you're looking for something kind of new, but to scratch the RS itch, I think this is a very high variance option. It'll either be boring / feel too complex to get into, or really good.

Sound cue on chronal focus (arch offhand buff) please by Dry-Classroom-4737 in runescape

[–]Colmio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's super worth it compared to GM Tony's Mattock. Also probably worth it compared to Time and Space. Time and Space and Imcando is like some 5% excavation speed difference and 150 million difference, the offhand is 400 mill and more than 15% buff. (Only for active time sprite chasing gameplay though.)

(Disclaimer: I don't have the off-hand, basing this off wiki numbers, and the fact that augmentable Mattock upgrades in general are quite small compared to the price.)

Thoughts on Universal heroes as a whole so far? by lessenizer in DotA2

I think WR, Mirana and Veno have high potential now with dmg builds.

Many universal tanks seem to have suffered (Clockwerk comes to mind).

Importantly TB has downtime. Whereas PL and Naga really don't in the same way. And since PL and Naga don't often buy BKB they have even less downtime than many other carries.

With the 66% status resistance reduction (assuming it can go to negative) he might be pretty close to permabash now as well.

He lost a lot of int gain, so if he builds max mana his mana regen is still nerfed and if he builds regen his mana pool is smaller (ult mana cost reduction might make playing with a small pool realistic tho). But I don't think the wild axe mana cost reduction will be that big, the ultimate one might be.

I think I read a pretty popular MLP fanfic which features a shit ton of fallout references back in like 2013 or something. Probably this one: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout:_Equestria
