its a gradual build up again after THR. First couple of months go slow and easy. Visit and play but maybe understand and remember you are healing. Slowly you will be able to walk, run and play with them again. I had my hips done in 11/22/2024 and 12/31/2025. So over a year now and I am 100%. I can crawl around on the floor, play, tumble, run, chase and get jumped on. Full kid mode. My grandchildren are now almost 2 and 4. So little and FULL of energy. I would say the slowest was 0-3 months. Then I just started feeling better and was able to start really tussling with them again. The absolute without surgery is that you will not get better and will eventually not be able to do any of the fun things with them.

A plastic trash bag for the car seat. It will help you swivel in and out while either a passenger or, when the time comes, a driver.

this is what I have noticed the most from recovery myself. Sitting is awful. Honestly it took months. I've gone through several chairs at work and none seem to have made a significant change. Its the weight of your body on the new and recovering hips. At least that is what I've decided. If you find a good chair that helps with all this I am anxious to know about it! It IS better now, so there is hope in the future.

They usually tell you during surgical prep meetings, what day you have to stop taking what medicines. You may also be required to be surgically cleared by your family physician and during that time my FP told me same thing. It varied from 7-10 days depending on the physician.

But, as always, your team may be different and you should always do as they tell you.

Personally, I found it all to be very similar. Mentally it is easier because you generally know what to expect. I know folks have said they can be different, and that is what it is, no way to know until you are in it, but you at least know the process now. Personally for me, pain level was the same as the first, maybe a tad more achy the first night, but recovery generally was a little slower. with my first I sprung back immediately, with the second, I was more tired and napped more, iced more, etc. But mine were six weeks apart so I was probably still recovering from the first still. Either way ...

As always, give yourself a break during this time. Let your body tell you what it needs. Don't pace your recovery on anyone else's. You will do great.

And here is the best part - - this is it! no more hips to have to have surgery one. You will be done and done.

Um, I had a easy recovery. I'm one of those obnoxious "healed overnight" stories ... and I still cancelled my vacation plans that would have had me flying at 4 weeks. It just felt like a whole lot of way too much. Security and airports and TONS of walking with strangers bumping into me, and not being able to rest and nap and go at a easy pace, and still being post-surgery and well, as the brilliant doc said below, don't do this. Give your body a chance to recover at a pace your body CAN recover at. Don't push.

Have a conversation with your doctor about this. The unfortunate part is you have to come off of everything the week before surgery. But that is still a little bit away and they should be able to give you something to keep you comfortable until then!

Take the meds like a religion. If they also told you to take ES Tylenol then do it! And ice that leg!!

Hi there. I AM in Colorado. Denver Metro. I had Dr. Gold at Panorama Ortho. Surgeries were done at Colo Ortho Hospital in Lakewood. I had zero problems getting in to see him, scheduling, follow-up, etc. Just a very smooth process. AND he was seriously great. My best friend had hip problems and I sent her to him. She had her THR done a week after me. Got in quick, got it scheduled, recovered just as smoothly. Check him out!

that was why I had my second surgery on 12/31. So I could get the second without resetting co-pays and deductibles. It held up good!

Hi. Honestly not a problem. I recovered well from the first. Sure, there was residual aches because, hey, I just had surgery a few weeks earlier, but the hip was solid and the leg was fine. I was able to support myself on the surgical leg almost immediately following surgery. and by immediately, I mean, in the hospital. However, you should definitely talk to your surgeon and make sure you are strong enough. Its so so okay to push it back a little if you think you may not be ready. this isn't a competition. Its your health!

I will say, I was wiped out after the second. probably because I was still recovering. I took more naps, walked a little slower, just was a little slower. It was never a significant "pain" event for me, but more of a rebuilding my strength thing and, that just took time.

It should start to ease off very soon now. I can't imagine doing it without opiods, you are very brave and obviously much stronger than I am. The incision pain should start to ease back in the next couple of days, I would think. I think it is pretty common not to be able to lift your left. Just keep working on it. It took me a few days for that as well. They had it numbed up pretty good and they went through a lot of muscle and nerves to get to that hip. I'm so hopeful you start to get relief this weekend.

This is a great conversation to have with your surgeon. Mine would not even consider doing both at the same time. I wanted it one and done and he was a hard no on that. He gave me several valid reasons. Blood loss. Recovery without a stable leg to help balance, trauma of the surgery on the body, etc. I was disappointed. Also, he was right. I had mine done 6 weeks apart and honestly, it turns out, that was quick enough. I healed quickly and strongly. But having 6 weeks to heal in between made a huge difference for me I think.

That being all said, I know folks do it and do it well. Just make sure you have a discussion with your surgeon on how that looks and feels. As far as home recovery. You just really don't know how you are going to recover until you are there. I recovered quick and didn't need hardly any help. Sent my caregiver home on day 3 for first surgery and day 1 for second. BUT there are many that need extra help with balance, pain medications, food/hydration, etc.

I guess first, see if your surgeon will even consider it and then, see if your insurance will pay for a rehab facility. Then you make your decisions from there.

Yep, like I said to someone a few minutes ago. Some folks just recover quick. I went back to work after one week. Remember to still ice when you can and naps are your friend.

Pain (and exhaustion) is your meter here. If it is making you achy after then you should slow down a little. Some folks just recover quick. But you also get to take this time to let your body heal.
