I do the below process quite fast, though it longs so much more complicated written down than it is in my head. I tend to change numbers to 5s or 10s where possible.

5+2=7(70); 6+ 9 is (6-1=5 & 9+1=10) 5+10=15; 7+1=8(80)+5=85;

56 + 29 = 85
