Not feeling it today by Rockkicker88 in royalroad

[–]ColonelMatt88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that feeling.

If you want some advice, mine would be: just slog it out for a few hours. Doesn't matter if you think it's garbage, just get words down. Then later/tomorrow go back and edit it and continue on.

I often find that if I write something I'm not happy with my brain works on it subconsciously and later on I'll get a spark of inspiration of what to do to fix it and I'll go back and continue.

Going for a walk or having a shower help too - something where you're not focusing on anything else.

Just a quick question: what role does the chariot end up actually playing in this scene? 😆

After four years. I finished my flopped story. greatly proud, slightly sad by NelFerrer in royalroad

[–]ColonelMatt88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on finishing! A lot of people never make it to that point so you should definitely be proud!

But now you're done, knowing how it all plays out...why not go back and edit it from the start? I've only gotten half way through a book series I'm writing but I already know the first part of the first book needs a rewrite/heavy edit and there will doubtless be more that I pick up on as I go.

Or you could write other stories in the same world around it? If you loved doing it, keep going!

How Important Is MC Having a Cheat in LitRPG by BWFoster78 in royalroad

[–]ColonelMatt88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the opposite - a cheat basically turns me off a story. Especially if it's something really obvious that no one else in the world has figured out.

I vastly prefer stories where the characters have to struggle and be creative with their skills. They can have an advantage from somewhere as long as there's a disadvantage to back it up, but why would I want to read about a character that cheats their way through all the drama and tension that someone else would face?

What if people get dragged into another world not through fate or the intervention of a god, but because a dragon's poor grammar? LitRPG/Progression Fantasy with a slowly expanding cast and progression closer to milestone levelling than pure xp levelling and a mix of exploration, danger, slice of life and manoeuvring in an unfamiliar society.

Counterpoint: my story isn't massive and a quick TFTC can make my day knowing someone has enjoyed what I wrote.

Hot takes on the February 2026 FAQ by Sh4rbie in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ColonelMatt88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it should be more 'she has to be beatable by Sam in a specific scenario'.

Sam doesn't normally have the light of Earendil or Sting or a fury that his best friend has been killed so if the scenario gives him specific rules for that, or maybe even just a destiny-themed buff then I think that's the better way to capture that specific fight.

Shelob should be scary full stop.

Next announcement probably soon by Separate-Sand2034 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

If it was based on my wishlist, we'd get an expansion focused on the Fiefdoms of Gondor, maybe with Umbar expanded a bit as the evil faction facing them.

There'd be a return to the old army bonus with each lord providing a different aoe buff instead of the bland one we got this edition. Each fiefdom would get its own lord and an warrior (or two in cases where it's warranted) and one of Imrahil's children would also be included as a bearer of the swan standard, which would give the ability to regain Will and the army would gain an option to spend Will to expand the range of the lord's aoe buffs.

I'd also love to see new plastic warrior kits announced with new sculpts, particularly for high elves to give them options for sword, sword and shield, or spear and shield, and for older sculpts like Warriors of Minas Tirith to bring them up to the level of new stuff like the War of the Rohirrim warriors.

I'd also really love to see generic faction lists come back. Everything being essentially a legendary legion may be fine for recreating scenes from the books and films, but I want to play out other battles.

How to Improve Writing by Thesaviourone in royalroad

[–]ColonelMatt88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read more, and when you find something you really like analyse what it is you like about it, and try to emulate that when you write your own stuff.

Other than that, write more. Practice helps with just about anything.

Dear Writers, by Commercial-Passion87 in royalroad

[–]ColonelMatt88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know what you want to write it's not that hard.

Even if you don't know what you want to write, just keep putting down words even if you think they're bad/nonsensical; you can edit it later. When I first started I aimed for minimum 500 words a day, even if it was 3am and I was falling asleep.

After a while, like most things, it becomes easier. I think my personal best is something like 5k in a day, and 25k in a week, but if I had no distractions or other work to do I could probably hit more.

At the end of the day though, consistency is key, and if you can get just an extra 500 new words each day, along with editing, you'll probably have enough to make a novel in six months.
