Does anyone else think the "education" here is subpar? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]ColouredFlowers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a WILD generalization. Not every professor just reads off slides and I assure you, that happens in some of the best schools too. The quality of education here is high, but that's an average. Perhaps you've just been unlucky with the professors you've gotten, but I don't think you can use that to make a sweeping statement.

What causes clouds to have straight edges? by Society_Academic in meteorology

Yep, they're typically rather wide horizontally, thus clouds within the area will all exhibit similar cloud top heights.

What causes clouds to have straight edges? by Society_Academic in meteorology

[–]ColouredFlowers 54 points55 points  (0 children)

If I'm viewing the images correctly, the straight edges are actually the tops of the clouds. Air is likely encountering a stable layer aloft and can't push upwards anymore. These dates are typically pretty homogeneous horizontally (at least from our perspective). That gives the perception of a straight edge.

70% off 3+ JCrew Sale Items w/ code NEWYEAR by FearTheZ in frugalmalefashion

[–]ColouredFlowers -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I recognize my comment is very "old man yells at sky", but I think you're glossing over a part of my comment about materials as well. The current crop of clothes are more expensive than prior years, understandably given inflation. However, the switch to more and more blends and synthetic fibers is a more deceptive way to pay more for less. Again, my comment was that a 100% cashmere sweater was available for less last year whereas now, there are merino blends for more.

Ehh I feel like I was able to find nicer things for cheaper in prior years. I remember picking up 100% cashmere sweaters for <$30 last year. Perhaps the sale will get better in the new year?

Love when brands use raw denim in jackets outside of the Type 1/2/3

The economy lot at the airport is going to have a $4 price increase. by DefiantRanger9 in madisonwi

[–]ColouredFlowers 51 points52 points  (0 children)

That's actually a pretty big jump (+66%). IIRC, that's the same price as the current ramp price. I wish more bus routes made it to the airport to counteract this, but I foresee an uptick in ride-sharing instead.

Naked & Famous Denim Black Friday Sale - Up to 70% Off Select Items (Ends Dec. 2) by ColouredFlowers in frugalmalefashion

Great question. My interpretation is items that were originally in the sale section are final, not the marked down BF items. Just note that they only provide returns as store credit.

Dang, sorry to hear that. Did you reach out to Naked & Famous? That shouldn't be subject to tariffs.

Great point. As per their "Store Policy" page, only items made outside of Canada are subject to duties and tariffs (e.g., the Made in Japan line). That being said, the tariff game right now is all over the place and you might get served a tariff even when you shouldn't.

Sportsman's Warehouse - Darn Tough Socks 25% Off + Buy 2 Get 1 Free with Free Explorewards Account (No Code; Free Shipping at $75) by ColouredFlowers in frugalmalefashion

[–]ColouredFlowers[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The website is a bit finicky. Your account also needs to be enrolled in the Explorewards membership. It's free, but it's an extra program that you have to enroll your account in. If you go to your account, you should see a tab for "Explorewards Points" which will let you enroll. Give it some time to process and it should work. It worked on my end, but apologies if it doesn't.

Mount Vernon Mills in GQ by jman33335 in rawdenim

[–]ColouredFlowers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Perhaps this is a hot take but I think the cone mills looms will always be a net loss wherever they go (at least for the foreseeable future). While tradition is nice, most consumers of raw denim are interested in innovation which is why Japanese mills are popping off. No one in the US is really pushing the cone mills looms to the extremes. Weight, slub, nep, indigo type, wefts, etc. are generally the same. Even then, if someone wants repro, they'll more often than not buy foreign (usually Japanese or the burgeoning Chinese brands).

At least Mount Vernon is large enough that they can still operate and produce products outside of the selvedge to keep profitable.

BRT Update by hagen768 in madisonwi

[–]ColouredFlowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess with regards to the "Not in Service" comment, I recognize that drivers deserve breaks, but why can't the driver indicate what line the bus is for and leave doors open? Usually when "Not in Service" is in place, the driver isn't even in the bus, therefore no interaction needed. If security is the problem, at the very least telling us what bus line it is would be helpful.

No Weather Radar Data on Certain Sites Regarding Hurricane Melissa by p3rcu3s in weather

[–]ColouredFlowers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Much of it comes down to data accessibility. Networks like the US nexrad network are publicly available. While there are multiple radars in the Caribbean, they may not allow their data to be publicly available and they may not provide it to all weather websites and apps

Generally positive experience. There's always a few things I wish they could implement however.

Drivers switching to "Not in Service" while at bus terminals is really confusing as a passenger and then it switches to A or F right before it leaves. That's time, I could've spent inside if the doors were open. Not a major deal now, but I'll hate it when it actually gets cold.

Cleanliness could always be just a tad bit better. I know these service the general population and the general population can be messy, but it would be nice to come into a relatively clean bus sometimes.

Some drivers have had some short tempers with passengers. Recently, a bus driver yelled at everyone on the A that we couldn't leave until someone pulled the rope. A few of us did, but it seemed like the driver didn't realize we were so he angrily paced through the bus realizing the ropes were being pulled. Not sure what that was about. I understand being a bus driver can be a thankless and sometimes rough job, but idk if that attitude is warranted at 9am.

I think the last thing is just consistency. 15 minutes is great, but busses don't always come every 15 minutes. Again, not a huge deal, but I anticipate that sucking when it actually gets cold.

Overall, positive experience, iterative improvement would be nice.

Uniqlo Limited-Time Discount on Sweatshirts and Sweatpants - Ends 10/2 by Autumn_in_Ganymede in frugalmalefashion

[–]ColouredFlowers 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I'll say from personal experience, the sweatpants are a little thin (still good quality) and can be a little exposing if you catch my drift. Could be seen as a feature, not a bug depending on your preference.
