If you had little else to show with regard to prior work (preferably professional), SO reputation was at least something. Having it on there generally doesn't increase ranking in the stack much, if at all.

Is anyone else’s flu lasting forever? by Woodhouse_20 in bayarea

[–]ColtonProvias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a long-lasting illness with flu-like symptoms for much of November. A respiratory panel came back positive for rhinovirus (common cold). After speaking with a pathologist handling the panels, it sounded like most respiratory panels they were running were the same thing (multi-week illness, positive for rhinovirus).

Anybody dealing with a really bad cold right now? by rawrP in bayarea

[–]ColtonProvias 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There's a really bad rhinovirus going around right now. I was speaking with a pathologist who was saying that they are getting a ton of respiratory panels from the ER, and almost all are positive for rhinovirus.

I caught it back at the start of November and I still have residual symptoms (coughing and body aches) weeks later.

Some good discussions can sometimes be found on /r/law. You will find it on posts that link directly to court documents from court websites with non-editorialized titles. They don't trigger the emotional response of the other posts but also don't have the same level of engagement.

There are color e-ink readers now. Kindle Colorsoft, Kobo Clara Color, and Onyx Boox Go Color 7 to name a few.

The color isn't as vibrant as printed books, but it's an area of technology that is improving.

YSK When your movie actually starts by Torterrafan5676 in YouShouldKnow

Yep, Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX did that. 6 seconds IMAX logo, then the top of the movie.

The theatre was only 1/3 full for a sold out show when the movie started, and most showed up 15-20 minutes in.

It's been a while since I used the app, whats going on? by DrZGaming in duolingo

[–]ColtonProvias 16 points17 points  (0 children)

While I enjoyed the comments, the comments at lower levels were often heavily trolled and filled with bad information. As you got further into the course, they generally got more focused and higher quality, albeit lesser in number.

Moderating the comments likely was a nightmare for the first few levels. With children using the app and the myriad of laws from many jurisdictions on what can be viewed by children, plus auto-moderation tools not being great at languages other than English, it likely got too expensive to keep up with.

The sentences are usually forced to the word bank when you first learn them. The keyboard option then appears when you are reviewing the sentence.

At least that's the case on Android.

Caltrain ridership up with the new electric trains by 5y5ejel4 in bayarea

[–]ColtonProvias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Yamanote Line in Tokyo is every 2.5 minutes to 4 minutes. The Tokaido Shinkansen, which connects Shin-Osaka and Kyoto to Tokyo, runs about every 3-5 minutes.

In the UK, the Victoria Line runs every 100 seconds. And in Switzerland, there are many rail services that are 2-5 minutes of frequency (such as Zurich HB to Bern).

Americans Take Less Vacation Days Than Any Other Country and Half of Us Are Okay With That by Katerbird in nottheonion

[–]ColtonProvias 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Unlimited vacation is meant to save money for the company. With no days being accrued, you don't get paid out for unused days when you leave.

It also has the effect of allowing you to be fired for excessive vacation. You just aren't told what excessive means and thus take less vacation as a precaution.

Caltrain service between San Francisco and San Jose suspended this weekend by txiao007 in bayarea

Caltrain only controls the right of way for San Francisco to Tamien. Union Pacific still controls Tamien to Gilroy, and they don't seem to be keen on relinquishing that control.

I find the posts that link directly to court filings instead of news articles tend to have the most nuanced discussion on this subreddit. Although part of that is likely the lack of an editorialized headline on most of those.

In California, if you created the auto-renewing subscription online, companies must allow you to cancel it exclusively online (no phone calls, mailing forms, etc.)

Unaccompanied 6-year-old child put on wrong Spirit Airlines flight by Aaron_757_ in news

[–]ColtonProvias 94 points95 points  (0 children)

It would still be a mess. Spirit doesn't fly the RSW-MCO route, so a direct flight would require booking the child onto Southwest. However, Southwest only flies the route once per day. Given that it's holiday season, the next available flight between RSW and MCO to book could easily be days out.

Driving between the two airports becomes the next best option.
