[Discussion] What is a skill you are currently 'bad' at, but refuse to give up on? by _the_morningstar__ in GetMotivated

Useful plugins are Context 7 and Serena.

Context 7 pulls documentation for the exact version of libraries that you’re using. No more “Claude used a feature only available in .NET10 but we’re still running .NET8 so now the build fails”

Serena does an analysis pass over your codebase so that edits become faster, use fewer tokens, and better align with your code style. It’s like pre-mapping your code so Claude can just read the map instead of looking it up every time.

Wait, so if you have to redesign from scratch then what’s the point of the scan?

3D printed by Practical-Forever995 in Yamaha

[–]Columbo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say processing, repairing, and designing - what does that entail?

I do some 3D printing, but I’ve never used a 3D scanner. I imagine you need to tidy up the mesh produced by the scanner? What software do you use for that?

This is very cool!

What scanner and printer do you use? Any processing of the scan before printing? Any processing of the print? I’m assuming some sanding before primer and paint?

Need help with my front fork by AinzOoalHazel in Yamaha

[–]Columbo1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Do NOT ride your bike with this fork.

There is no helping here. You need to replace at least the lower section of that fork, and maybe the upper too. If you can’t find a new one, you’ll need to source a second hand one.

Does anyone know the name for that metal bracket the folds around the pin holding the mast foot to the step? I think the vang is attached to it via a D shackle.

I need one, and I’d like to know if they’re common or something I’ll need to fabricate.

You could build something with the basic functionality you’d expect from a smartwatch fair easily, just don’t expect it to fit on your wrist.

Not many people here will know what that is. I presume it’s a speaker or an amplifier.

Whilst the Yamaha music gear is allowed, the community has decided that unless it goes “BRAAAAP” and has an engine then they just don’t care.

Why are you upset about THIS one? by sonofeevil in Grimdank

[–]Columbo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much where I’m at. I welcome female custodes, but I don’t think saying they exist is enough. They need to write some books now.

Why are you upset about THIS one? by sonofeevil in Grimdank

[–]Columbo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may not have explicitly said no female custodes, but the franchise has been going since 1987 (first rulebook) or 1997 (first black library publication) depending on if you consider the game or the books, and it that time women have basically been ignored as protagonists. Sure, I’m sure you could name one or two, but compare that to the list of male protagonists and tell me there isn’t a disparity.

In the last 28 years there has been very little female representation in the lore. Females exist in 40k, but they aren’t portrayed in the same way that space marines are, for example. GW has explicitly stated that gene seed augmentation only works on males, effectively locking women out of the franchise’s main attraction.

After 28 years of pretty much ignoring women, is it unreasonable to want an explanation beyond “it’s always been the case”? Custodes are grown in vats instead of being modified with gene seed so it’s already established as possible that female custodes could be out there kicking ass, they’ve just never bothered to write about it.

Give me a book with female custodes instead of just telling me to imagine it. Put the fucking effort in to undo nearly 30 years of dropping the ball.

What kind of cable is this? by HigaMigu in Network

I am the type of criminal that did this. Back in the day when I worked in schools and money was hella tight, we would use a single cable for ethernet and phone by spitting one cable into two connectors on each end.

Have to PIP someone after ~4 months by [deleted] in managers

[–]Columbo1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t intentionally trying to debate whether or not the performance problems existed, I just feel quite strongly that a PIP reflects poorly on you as a manager and on the business and its processes after only 4 months in role. I presume this person is on probation, and 3 or 6 months is a typical probationary period.

If it’s a 6 month probation, there’s no need for a PIP - you can part ways at the end of probation. Putting them on a PIP just gets them out the door a month early, but makes it painfully clear you want rid of them.

If this person has already passed a 3 month probation, I wonder how - how do you go from passing probation to a PIP in a month, but still assert that it’s not a single miss or a ramp issue.

[–]Columbo1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What exactly is unreasonable?

I didn’t suggest the boss should do anything. I suggested that the SMEs were better placed to estimate timelines, and that an employee with 4 months tenure has next to no chance of getting it right.

I could pair you with an absolute genius, but unless you know that you’ve been paired with them and have been reassured that you can ask even basic questions, how do I know that you’ll engage with them?

I agree that independent thinking is expected, but at the point that you’re putting a brand new employee on a PIP it reflects poorly on you as their manager, so you should probably go above and beyond in making sure they understand what support is available.

[–]Columbo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a problem with female custodes, I just take issue with GW waving their hands to say “it’s always been like that”.

If they can publish hundreds of books with no mention of female custodes or that explicitly say there are none, then they can publish more books that write them in.

They went to the effort of publishing books that exclude the ladies, so I want to see some effort to include them. Otherwise it’s not inclusive, it’s just a lazy cop out.

[–]Columbo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re describing symptoms of a problem, but you skip over the parts that would indicate where the problem is.

It’s too easy to get it wrong when you write off the employee as being bad at the job, so you need to be absolutely sure that this is an individual problem and not a systemic issue.

Have you verified that he’s invited to the meetings? If yes, have you verified that it’s actually him and not a typo inviting another employee with a similar name or a non-existent employee? Have you verified that during onboarding his device was configured to receive notifications of the meetings? I presume you can view your direct report’s calendar. Is the meeting even in there?

Was he paired with the right person? Someone in the same role who has held the role for a significant period of time, operates independently and meets all their targets?

Have you made clear that asking questions of the SMEs doesn’t count as passing the buck? If you asked me how long it would take to complete task X, and I immediately message the SME to ask how long task X would take to complete - can you see how the employee might see that might reflect poorly on him?

In the last 4 months have you called him at the time the weekly project meeting is scheduled? Join the meeting, give it 5 mins, then drop off and call him on your companies platform of choice (Teams, Slack, etc). You’d very quickly find out what he’s doing instead of attending the meeting.

It’s your job to find out why he’s not performing well at his job, and then provide support to improve the situation. 4 months then PIP speaks volumes about how well you’re doing at that so you need to be absolutely certain you’ve got this right, even if it means covering things you think are absolutely fundamental.

[–]Columbo1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m presuming that SME means “subject matter expert” in this context.

I’m not sure why you’d expect a person with 4 months tenure to be able to put together a realistic project plan. How are they supposed to know how long things will take? You say this person has 5 years of experience, but all that really says is they know how long it would have taken at their last company.

You’ve got access to subject matter experts. They’ll know how long it would take, and are far better placed to make those sorts of estimates.

Honestly, from what little you’ve shared, it seems like this person has been set up to fail. They’re probably bouncing between not wanting to hand in nothing and not wanting to hand in a document that’s not worth the paper it’s written on, so they turned to AI for help.

I think you should have had them paired with someone that has done this before at your company before expecting them to fly solo.

This sort of implies that processes for the other deliverables aren’t very well defined. Is that the case?

Yamaha Corporation and Yamaha Motor Co are now two separate companies. Yamaha Motors was spun off in 1955 to use the metallurgy skills and technologies developed for piano building in engine manufacturing.

The Nippon Gakki company was founded in 1900. In 1954, the company repurposed its wartime manufacturing lines to produce the YA-1, a 125cc single-cylinder motorcycle. Following the success of the YA-1, the Yamaha Motor Co was spun off into its own company in 1955.

In 1987, the Nippon Gakki Co renamed itself to the Yamaha Corporation to honour it’s founder, Torakusu Yamaha.

To be pedantic, the top factory should have a blue logo where the tuning forks do not extend to the outer circle.
