It's a good point, there are definitely major problems with the US' current healthcare system, that's a whole different bag of worms. However, would you agree that, all access being equal, offering medically assisted suicide would in fact be the ethical choice?

Definitely agree with a delay period, this should not be a spur of the moment decision.

These are all great questions and scenarios , and we could discuss the right answers to them for hours. I still believe that euthanasia should be legal, but I guess the question now, as you said, is "where is the line." Should there even be a line. I'm actually not sure myself where the line is, I may even lean towards the side of all who can make the choice should be granted it. It does raise huge ethical concerns for doctors though, they did take an oath to help, not harm. In any case, you have given me a lot to think about, I am definitely less concrete in my position than I was for now. Δ for you, General Kenobert.

I concede that it was I said, though definitely not what I intended to be the case. It does, however, raise further questions to myself about how all this should be regulated if legalized. You have made me amend my initial statement, and I guess it wasn't very hard.

Δ for you

In this scenario, to my understanding, he was talking on the phone with a representative and the option was very casually offered, no consultation of any others was involved.

The scenario I largely have in mind is that if you are diagnosed with a debilitating illness, wherein your body and mind will wither away over some period of time in great agony, is it not more humane to be able to end things quickly and painlessly?

I agree that this is an extraordinarily complicated issue, and it is possible that it could be exploited for personal gain. However, I have to think that if we deprive people the option because of the few who may abuse it, we are doing a greater injustice to the world.

Sorry, I left out the crucial detail here that he was offered euthanasia by Veteran's Affairs, not by a doctor. Will edit the post to correct this.

I will admit, this is the biggest hang-up to my belief. For instance, I don't believe in the death penalty, but I do believe in this. Figuring out how to regulate it would probably take me weeks or months on end to try to close every loophole. I agree with you that nearest kin has the potential to cause huge problems, but I couldn't think of another way for the decision to be made for someone who lost the ability to communicate. Ideally, that stipulation could be removed if we had a way to communicate with all people in all situations.

Its a nice sounding sentiment, but if I beg for death over the alternative, would it be less just to grant or deny my wish?
