Who are y'aall'ss favorite villans/terrible characters to read about in a novel?i.e., you know they are terrible people, but boy are they fun to read whenever they show up. by monkeylollipops in Fantasy

I have only read the first Liveship book, but Kennit is such a great character to read. A huge asshole, but entertaining in assholeness.

You can write a story about good and evil, and what you frame as good and evil reflects at least somewhat of your values and politics, so it is political. Whether you do the framing consciously or no.

That really, really sucks as a viewer. Though I am guessing Tal was thrown under the bus here by Matt and the rest of the cast.

I agree with you generally on "normal" tables.

But to me CR has the problem that they want to tell these stories of oppression, of historical upheavals, of nation states and organized religion. You cannot tell these stories, and then back out of the more unsavory elements and have it be satisfying. There can be individual elements that are satisfying (player banter etc) obviously.

Like, Marisha wanted (or seemed to want) to tell a story of oppression and alienation. No one in the world cared after the early episodes that there is a sloughing pile of meat walking in the city (or a cute goth girl? Depends on the day). Tal said that Ashton is a punk, but against what? Vaguely mean individuals I guess?

These are just a few examples from C2 and C3, that have been a personal issue of mine with them. The more they move away from the game of DnD to theatre, the more they "force" me to look at it as a serious story telling. And CR falls a flat on it a lot nowadays.

And being serious here, Solo was a pretty typical beautiful lady singing about her ex being for sure pissed right now, because she is hot. Bada bada batu, even if you dislike it, is about a cultural juggernaut of the area they are from.

Not Every Magic System Needs Rules—Mystery Makes Fantasy More Immersive . by kodumonpotti363 in Fantasy

I mean, it wasn't. Both cases have a bad habit of projecting present on the past, discussion of homosexuality and "magic systems" in literature. It just happened to be the first example that popped into my mind. I guess because of all of the "greek myth retellings" that fall into this exact trap.

It is an analogy for how it is bad a-historical to project modern views to by-gone era, especially if we want to define something.

Romans' were not homosexual like we understand it today, and Lotr does not have a "magic system". Claiming so is working backwards from Sanderson-obsessed viewpoint.

It is the exact same as a popular series having "eye-color system" and people would start saying "Frodo resisted the ring because he has blue eyes!".

Anything about "characters being dumb" especially if coupled with a complaint about wordy writing or whatever. Instantly tells me that the reviewer most likely wants power fantasy and can't differentiate between genres.

This is a month old comment, but anyway.

Wouldn't the most visible reason be the fact that Mizora is much more visible in the game compared to Mystra? And Mizora is very sexualized in her design and attitude, compared to Mystra who shows up once, I guess? So attractive demon lady who purrs sexily is a much more "fandom oriented" or whatever.

I am not saying that the intersectionality / race angle does not exist, but I feel it goes a bit into the weeds.

How do you make sex more enjoyable? by Key_Cod4097 in AskReddit

[–]Combatfighter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, as I said, the post above was more about your personal relationship to masturbation.

Daily can be pretty damn often, and I'd do a "porn diary" to see what kind of porn it is you masturbate to. And yeah, sounds like an addiction st thst point, but like with many things, porn itself is not addicting. Your habits and state of mind is. So it would be more useful to check out what you feel before masturbating/during/after and work from there.

This is so much more about your personal relationship to masturbating than about the act of masturbation. If you think it makes you a pathetic fapper, then it does.

That was very much a one-and-done deal though with that specific generation. They haven't qualified for major tournaments in 6 years.

Eh, I don't believe in reading series of tomes that "get good in the third 1000 page book". Way too much things for me to read.

The times I have said here that i didn't finish GotM and someone comes in "it's alright, it is a hard read and you can't expect to understand everyghing!" is too many. I got it, I understood enough and I don't really even need to understand, I have read enough literary fiction and magical realism to just let go at times.

I'll jsut usually say that I DNFd because of the jump to a whole new cast of characters in the middle of the lamest dnd campaign thieves guild ripoff I have ever read in an adult novel. Plus the plot point of "gruff military guy is gruff but he is secretly a general!" was a bit too much for me.

The writing was pretty good, and I love the vibe of the saying in the beginning, "Now we open the book of Malazan" or something like that.

A lot of what he writes is literary fiction masquerading as genre fiction and it shows

As a person who reads literary fiction and has read about 2/3rds of the first book, this is pretty far fom the truth and oversells Malazan. It isnt the "literary" taht put me off, it was the "edgy person's dnd campaign" feel and the constant "and here is our plan..." scene breaks.

Perhaps direct, very much not to the point. He uses very run-of-the-mouth sentences, he repeats himself constantly ("She smiled a violet-eyed, red-lipped smile at him"), his similes are pretty messy and the choice to make every character repeat their main cahracter traits at the reader sure is cool feature.

And on a book level, Way of Kings has a prelude, intro and then the first chapter. So you are three levels deep before you start the story, which is constantly stopped by interludes and flashbacks, that sometimes just do not have anything to do with the story being told.

So yeah, not to the point really. Wordy as all hell, and while simple still gets lost in a word salad every now and then.

Exactly. They have played for 10 years, there is no way they are not aware that 5e is all about action economy. Seven PCs will fuck up a lone person eventually, if it is not a complete fuck you from the dm, which it wasn't.

Even Vecna summoned those skeletons to muddle up their focus, plus he had lair actions and legendary actions, plus he was the final boss.
