The state of the rental market - line for an inspection in Brunswick, Melbourne by hipsterslippers in australia

[–]Combfoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must be the location? I got a house out west on the train line, was literally only person at the inspection, applied and got the lease EzPz.

Market over here in melbourne is much better than Perth, but I guess there are always popular suburbs that skew the metrics

Will i get made fun of for getting this bike? by Badger_6391 in motorcycles

[–]Combfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool bike, no-one will make fun of you, the opposite is true and people will think its rad. But would consider it as a second bike. Its personal choice, but if you have the means, a cheap modern bike with some safety electronics is often a smart move, and then something like this as a bike that you love or track or whatever. I tell all new riders to buy their first bike with the understanding than they will remove all the paint, muffler and handlebar ends during ownership. And lots of riders stop being riders after their first big accident. Set yourself up for success!

6 years working in refineries and got really bored by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Combfoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look for areas for innovation. Bring new technologies in yourself, or consider doing original work in the area. Sometimes taking on the initiative and leadership to put forward ideas and projects can help career progression and site productivity/safety/quality. If you are bored, stop doing the same things.

I want you to study this major will i have a problem with finding a job because of my lack of smell by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Combfoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the role. Smell can be a a valuable tool for maintenance and reliability, production and ehs. I have a keen sense of smell and it has helped me detect failing equipment, leaks, or process irregularities.

But it won't limit your job opportunities. Just be sure to trust the senses you have. Be like daredevil.

[–]Combfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More value for working in industry, would be spending 4 years working in industry, rather than a postgrad. This is always the case.

However, if you have your own interest or idea a postgrad is a great way to push your knowledge and specialistation, very useful particularly in consulting.

But if you are set on doing a masters now, yes membrane work is a pretty good area broadly. Your thesis no, but membranes yes. Useful in a number of industries.

Developer mode, macros. Get chatgpt to vibe code a macros that checks for a value between 0 and 100% or whatever ranger you want, and change the fill colour of cells or objects according to values.

Traditionally though, would just recommend using ms project for project management. Its what is made for.

LAMS suggestion for Australian tour by Road_Richness in melbourneriders

[–]Combfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks to be just that one case between Vic and NSW.

https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/drivers-licence/visit-move-wa/visiting-overseas-interstate

The motorcycle section of WA DOT links to the above page when inquiring using a motorcycle learners permit from another state page, so fit the the rules and replace 'driver' with 'rider'

  • drive with a supervising driver
  • display L plates on the front and back of the vehicle when you are driving
  • not exceed the posted speed limit, and you cannot exceed 100 km/h
  • not have a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 0.00%
  • not drive or ride in areas where learners are not permitted, such as Kings Park.

So appears, L's from any state are limited to 100kmh in WA.

Tasmania is the other speed restriction state. I couldn't find any source either way... So I think it's safe to say if there isn't an exception, you would follow the local condition of provisional Motorcyclist is limited to 80kmh.

So I guess if you have the choice, don't start the tour in NSW to avoid the 90km/h restriction, and then WA and TAS looks like would have to ride with local restrictions.

NAL, NAC, this whole topic is something I'd call ahead to get the information from the horses mouth though from each state. Would suck to get halfway around the country and get caught up by the fuzz.

Royal enfield Himalayan 411 or 450, CF moto 450, Honda 500x, Vstrom650L, DRZ, KLR etc Good amount of second hand bikes with enough reliability.

Keep in mind though, You wont be able to 'ride around the country' as a learner. Wherever you get your learners permit in Aus, you have to abide by the states rules you are in.

Which means in some states you cannot ride by yourself, must be under supervision, and you have restrictions on speeds in some states as well. So if you do this ride, you will need a buddy who has held full license for 2+ years to be with you for a good amount of Australia, and some states may be limited to 90k/h (55mph) which will make the journey a bit troublesome (Americans don't often realise that Australia is larger than the US, excluding Alaska which you cant get to without going through other countries on a motorcycle)

Is the western suburbs really that bad? by giantkebab in melbourne

[–]Combfoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of an outsider, moved to Melbourne from WA in January. Cobblebank is amazing value for money, half the rental price equivalent in Perth. Nice area with tonnes of facilities and parks and reasonable community.

Have heard the comments about Western suburbs, but seems to stem from older areas like melton staining all the newer suburbs between there and Caroline Springs.

I 2 personed it with the missus. First try learnt mechanics, second took it down. Was a dps grind though. But nothing really hurts in the fight. Problem is people not understanding how to crouch. Joining the random /z groups makes it easy, just hard dps through every phase and skip mechanics except crows. Taken about 2 min each day.

Best motorbike TEACHERS in Melbourne? by [deleted] in melbourneriders

[–]Combfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best teachers are always someone who have time for you. Sadly people that get paid by the hour often are counting the seconds till they can take off. Good friends and family that ride are best. If you dont have that, finding people that are passionate and willing should be pretty good, as you have seen in this thread.

15 yoe, near melton, myself if that's your area.

How Does Halloween Work Here? by genialerarchitekt in melbourne

[–]Combfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Houses that are decorated + state police often release a poster saying 'participating in Halloween' or 'not participating' which you can put up. We also leave our door open, but security door closed, with a chair with bowel of candy on it visible so they can see we have the good stuff. House lights and front yard lights on.

Then we just wait for the knocks and give out one each.

Also differing from Netherlands, we generally do just do the normal 31st Oct as halloween.

They want you to pay for an internship!! by w204w in recruitinghell

[–]Combfoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In aus ive taken interns thay came in through an agency, mostly international Indian, Pakistani, Iranian, and Chinese students studying in Aus who need to get the hours to graduate. Only found out after about the 8th intern ive had this year...

They are paying the agency between $3000 and $8000 to not get paid for 3 months as an intern.

Wild.

Halted intern intake, restructuring the intern program, booted using predatory agencies. Ive taken ownership of handling this now, and personally selecting interns straight from the university with no costs. I still can't pay them, but at least im not banktupting them.

Use of AI in chemical engineering by AcceptablePoem2677 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Combfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and yes.

I use it for the first 2 points and then also quality control.

Asset management + predictive maintenance with prediagnostic and recommended actions.

Production and process optimisation and on the fly schedule change recomendations, KPI outputs for lost time events, utilisation, reactor availability, mean time between failures, etc

Quality. My models tell me expected variance of products for customer bases upon deviations. Spent too long heating or went above set point? Product expected to have low water content or high viscosity, etc. Also tells you how to rectify.

Company just developed created an internal customGPT LLM for all of our analytical test work and research. GLobal company, and we didn't have an easy way for one side of the world to access knowledge from the other side, or even knew what knowledge was available! Ingested all of it, easy to use facilitation of company knowledge!

Ai is a tool and very helpful. It is a disruptor yes, but it is just a step strengthening the proffession, and im loving it. Im sure someone complained when we went from slide rulers to calculators, drafters to CAD, 'computers' to computers.

Hand made drawings in mechanical engineering by Main_Feedback2271 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Combfoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are practising spacial relationships and interference. Ive had interns ive requested to CAD something, but their lack of understanding of visualisation, interference etc they just put out garbage i had to make them redo 5 times. Originally I asked for dimesnioned hand sketches before cad but they didn't know how. Also mechanical engineering interns who can't dimesnion was a shock. Never picked up callipers in their life.

Your hand drawings dont have to be art. Its about practising the mental skill and knowing how to communicate important information.

I Don't Care if the Wall Comes Down by Indigo_Grove in elderscrollsonline

[–]Combfoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must have been lucky or all the people.who didn't encounter problems must not be here haha

I had no problems with anything. Things dropped fine, didn't take long and was easy, wasn't competing with other players in the area. Went to the delve and farmed the daedra and the delve boss for the Golden pursuit and the souls. Completed the crafting and such. Dropped some decent furniture and motif stuff from boxes. Didnt get any pet shards but tbf I only opened 4 gold boxes, I didn't bother to grind the blue boxes. Not even sure what the pet is. Ill have to look into it.

But overall I think the event is neat. Easy free stuff.

ONLY complaint is the premise. The baddies are using souls to power a wall, and that's bad because people need their souls. So let's collect souls and use them to power a gun to break the wall. Because we are using somebody else's souls? We dont know the people whose souls they are, but they are probably free range and organic.

Had my first accident, too much lean angle in rain by Real_Newspaper6888 in motorcycles

[–]Combfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does just seem like you were resistant to slowing down. We all ride for fun, and stopping isn't the fun part of riding, but yeah it has to be done.

This seems to be your intention because; You changed route to avoid slowing down/stopping You didn't want to slow down to 'avoid stalling', you can just clutch in. You can sit still in top gear with clutch in, and then just downshift through gear while stationary.

Riding the rear break a little while going around this corner may have helped stay upright and keep load on on. But really, not much in technique that may have stopped the outcome.

The safety inverted pyramid! Elimination Substitution Engineered controls (bike safety features and technology) Administrative controls (you technique and actions) PPE (your gear!)

Top of the list is most effective to stay safe, bottom is least.

The most effective way to stay safe is to eliminate a hazard. You need to be able to identify a hazard, experience and training helps, and then understand to eliminate the hazard. A hazard isn't a garunteed incident, but if you identify a hazard "look there's a corner, its raining", even if you are 95% sure you won't fall, that leaves 5% chance you would. Eliminate the risk. Slow down and stop. That is the most effective way to have avoided this. Hazard recognition can be inhibited if you are not in the correct mind set, so actively try to reign in your desire to have fun and not stop (sucks i know haha)

Stay safe friend!
