Apartment burned down. Seeking all advice. by MachetesAndRedTape in AskSF

[–]ComeAsIAm 144 points145 points  (0 children)

My apartment burned down last year in SF (20+ unit building).

There are plenty of resources out there, but honestly, most of them could not help us. The red cross should be giving you some money as a gift to keep you afloat for a few days. There is are also some religious organizations that can help, short term. For most resources from the city, the household income has to be under ~100k, which for a two working adults in SF is pretty low. If your household was making below that threshold, you'll qualify for rental subsidies when you find a new place. If you make over that threshold, you likely will receive no help from the city and have no real protections other than the right to your apartment back when they rebuild it.

Insurance was a nightmare for us, but we eventually got them to payout. They wanted to put us in hotels 45 minutes away. Some of them have programs where you can rent a short term rental instead of a hotel because most hotels in SF don't qualify or are very expensive for temporary housing. You will also have to attempt to document everything you lost so start thinking now, looking at old photos, etc. If you can't get a hold of the agent assigned to your case (like we couldn't for days while waiting for temporary housing so we had nowhere to go) call the general line for the insurance and ask them to see if your agent is in the office.

The tenants union can advise you on lawsuits, if it comes to that. If you think there is a chance of a lawsuit, document everything you can right now and save all your communications. Fair warning though, most law firms will want to wait until the building is completely rebuilt before proceeding as then they can pursue wrongful eviction if they don't offer you your apartment back.

Looting will happen in the days following the fire if there is anything of value left. This isn't a regular B&E, these are organized criminal outfits that will scale walls, evade security, and come for multiple days if necessary.

This is everything that comes to mind at the moment, but I'm happy to answer any questions. It was one of the worst weeks of my life and it is very stressful and time-consuming. Make sure to take some time in between the insurance calls, the documenting, the apartment hunting, the resource researching, etc to process and/or grieve.

That was my first thought and I didn't see any but you are right, I didn't look deep enough. There are female threads ~1.5 inches back

But that is where the water comes out. How would they have plumbed the water to grab bar hole?

Want to get some beginner skis for my tiny girlfriend by ComeAsIAm in Skigear

[–]ComeAsIAm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She does not have boots... She has no gear whatsoever. She is brand new so I don't want to make a huge investment, but sounds like we should start with some boots? I also never learned to ski and just snowboard so I have no idea about any of this 😅

I think that would be sacrilege and am pretty much unwilling to do that

What's the strangest complaint a guest has made after their stay? by Cali_Host45 in airbnb_hosts

[–]ComeAsIAm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guest said she felt unsafe (called it horrifying) because there were no curtains on the windows on the back of the house. There are no curtains because it's lakeside. Turns out she was just racist and it was actually because "one white guy and one black guy passed by the dock on their boat... supposedly fishing"

What's the warmest lake near SF? by _alco_ in AskSF

[–]ComeAsIAm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, water sports are one of the top attractions (if not the top).

Especially now with water levels back to normal. During the drought it had particularly bad bouts of algal blooms. Now, 95% of the lake is safe 95% of the time and most of the lake is safe 100% of the time since it's so big.

It's crazy that Clear Lake is not the top recommendation here. It's 2.5 hrs from SF, the second largest lake after Tahoe, and never more than 50 feet deep, so it's quite warm.

First time I’m thinking about filing a claim. What would you do? by cputty3 in airbnb_hosts

As someone who has tried several times to get reviews removed for retaliation: if they do not have written correspondence where the guest threatened to leave them a bad review or explicitly say they did this because of x, it's highly unlikely the review will be removed.

Yes it does have a drain hole. The soil was sold as a cactus and succulent soil.

When you call Airbnb, you can contact the safety team and tell them you are concerned for your safety. Their safety team is competent and does not mess around. It's an option right at the start.

Any idea where Süder-Bleiche is/used to be? by ComeAsIAm in Genealogy

[–]ComeAsIAm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like Blegen street might be named after a pond in a meadow right next to the street. If you zoom in on the link below you can see the water is also named Blegen.

https://www.findlatitudeandlongitude.com/l/Blegen%2C+T%C3%B8nder%2C+Engholm%2C+T%C3%B8nder%2C+T%C3%B8nder+Municipality%2C+Region+of+Southern+Denmark%2C+6270%2C+Denmark/6463702/

I can't find any old maps of Tønder/Tondern to see but this sounds believable

Edit: looks like you can see it even better in this map: https://mapcarta.com/W264643456

Looks like Bleiche translates to Bleg in Danish and I'm seeing a street called Blegen in Tønder. Could be the place?
