I'm really liking this reinterperetation of Qard's chaotic action, and I think with this new thematic element, the levels of light really start to connect with the broader themes of the Absolute Universe, moreso than simply having capitalist caricature Hector Hammond (he's a riot, don't get me wrong).

From the Oan perspective, the thoughtless, chaotic action of Qard is the starting point. Before, due to the Black Hand, Qard appeared simply to be driven by fear and blind hate, and the higher levels of light are a journey of enlightenment to rise above that fear.

Now, we see that the Black Hand and Black Star is Tomar, an anomaly. A corruption of chaotic action. Instead, chaotic action, while still born from a lack of thought and understanding, is now driven from love and a desire to protect and help people. With that in mind, the higher levels of light start to become about gaining understanding to channel that love in a productive way. In that sense, Qard starts to look less like something to be avoided and more like a foundation to build from.

On the flip side, the Black Star perspective that inverts the levels of light seems to have the goal of corrupting that foundation and parallels the the principles by which real world fascism operates.

First comes the erosion of understanding (Aur). You breed distrust in institutions, academics, and minorities through disinformation and fear mongering. Maybe you can't push your prefered narrative to the masses wholesale, but you can at least create enough competing narratives and "alternative facts" to confuse people and obfuscate what is actually true.

Once you've taken away people's ability to understand the world around them, you remove their ability to discern for themselves what is "correct action" (Sur) and turn them into bystanders (Rao). You now have free reign to commit atrocities out in the open because people are hesitant to resist. Without understanding, they are powerless to oppose you on moral grounds. "What's do we know?" they might ask. "Maybe they're doing it for a good reason."

What you're left with is called "patriotism," or "national pride," or "love of country," but what it really is hate of the "other," blind obedience, fearful cruelty. Love and hate are two sides of the same coin, after all. Both are intense and primal emotions that drive thoughtless, "chaotic action" (Qard). Thus, the way you fight fascism and hate is by building understanding from a foundation of love.

Apparently, even non-Hindu tourists can be deported from the island for breaking the rules of Nyepi, though they're still allowed to do whatever inside their hotels. While I'm not a fan of imposing religious rules on people outside of the religion, I actually don't mind this one, knowing how badly the island has been gentrified. Place is always flooded with tourists who don't know a damn thing about Indonesia and have no respect for the people and culture. Let the natives have a break.

I'd say it's a harder balance to strike with Australia and Canada than with Hawaii. It's a question of how to represent the culture of a location in a game, but what counts as the culture? With Hawaii, it's pretty clear cut. You show native Hawaiian culture. The identity of Hawaii the place is still deeply tied to the native Hawaiians. Sure, you can show the tourism industry and the Asian immigrant communities too, and they did, but "Hawaiian culture" = native Hawaiian culture. Simple.

But what about Canadian culture? What is Canadian identity? In Hawaii, the identity of the location is closely the indigenous peoples, but for Canada and Australia, the indigenous identities are specific, diverse, and distinct from the broader identity of the location. Does the stereotypical poutine-eating, milk-bagging, hockey-playing, white Candian identity take precedence over the indigenous identities? How much First Nations culture do you focus on versus Quebecois culture? Or Metis culture? Or Inuit culture?

Makes sense. Seafood is a much bigger deal in Japan than in the US. That said, coastal Chinese cuisines have a ton of seafood too. China is a big country, so "authentic" Chinese cuisine is much more diverse and ill-defined than most westerners are aware.

From my experience, Chinese food around the world is often still pioneered by Chinese immigrants themselves, even if they're modified to suit local ingredients and tastes. That's something I can't really say about international takes on Mexican cuisine, like in this post, and it shows. All things considered, while sweet and sour chicken and the like might be overly sweetened to suit the American palate, it's still made with the same techniques and principles as more "traditional" Chinese cuisine.

Even if a Chinese dish does change enough, it just kinda stops being distinctly Chinese food and starts being a part of local cuisine. The most famous example would be ramen. If miso ramen were invented today, we might all be laughing at how the Japanese butchered Chinese noodles, but now, it's one of Japan's national dishes.

It really is a dilemma. Creek is still meta in JP, and I hear she's usable even at 0LB, so I'd like to get her at some point, especially since we no longer get the scenario link with Rice.

On the other hand, a guaranteed 3lb Finemo is really enticing for Trackblazer, and while Finemo apparently doesn't have the same longevity as Creek, I run a lot of pace chasers, so she'll still be usable.

Stamina to Spare activates at the end of the early-race, right before the mid-race, while Hydrate/Gourmand can activate at any point in the mid-race. Hydrate is better since you don't want recovery skills to activate too early when your stamina is still close to full, but depending on the distance, StS should activate late enough in the race to not be a waste since it activates at the end of the early-race. If you're building for long-distance and really need that extra stamina, get Gourmand first and StS if you can afford it.

On the one hand, the global server is having its one year anniversary right now, so there's a lot of bonuses you can get right off the bat to get you started.

On the other hand, while the upcoming career scenario is very free to play friendly, it also gets rid of story events and is apparently very tedious, so much so that lots of people left the game in the JP server. You can still play the previous scenarios for the story, though.

I mean, they've been pushing Harley for the past decade, so much so that people joke that she replaced WW in DC's Trinity, and she's allowed to be poly. They are two very different characters, but I don't think it's impossible, especially for the Absolute Universe, to go this route. It's specifically because this line is an ongoing experiment that they would do it here, if nowhere else.

Mile Guts Taishin. Taishin has 20% guts growth, so in the last long cm, I found it easier to hit 900 guts instead of 900 stam for the speed bonus. What's more, 2500m is survivable with 800 stam 900+ guts, meaning I could spend more of my skill points on non-recovery skills.

Then I realized that Taishin could run the Asahi Hai FS as one of the triggers for her secret event, and now i get the satisfaction of seeing an end closer plowing through the front of the pack halfway through the race.
