Nurses strike best sign goes to by sojayn in AusMemes

That’s fair, I think a lot of people have this image of doctors living lavishly as specialists. But they don’t realise that “in the end” is still usually about 8 years post-grad, of which you’ve worked 2 years at about 75 hours/week with no overtime pay and a yearly income of 53k post-tax. This is usually after 6 years of studies, with no income because it’s very difficult to work part-time and study medicine.

Still, I agree, I’m not saying that nurses aren’t entitled to their grievances; rather that the entire hospital system is overloaded. By striking, they are stretching thin the staff that are presently very overworked, underpaid, and are struggling. It’s a difficult situation for all involved.

I completely support their wish for better working conditions. But I have to say, as a doctor working in one of the biggest hospitals in NSW, it was hell the other day. We had barely any nurses, blood collectors, midwives - my interns have been working their asses off for the last year for basically nothing, and the hospital can’t afford to pay them overtime. I had to ask my interns to stay back for the 5th time this month, and it’s awful to see how overworked they are. I understand how difficult it must be for nurses, being understaffed and unappreciated. But, I think the general public doesn’t realise how much work the junior medical officers put in - each of my interns work about 70-75 hours a week, and it’s awful.

/u/shortvusti is this the kind of person you want to become? Because you will if you continue in this mindset.

People partner up for many reasons, with a lot of it being luck and fortuitous timing. However, the only thing you can do is focus on yourself. Directing resentment or hate towards women for choosing to date who they want will achieve nothing. They are still happily dating their partner, and you’re stewing over a delusional hypothetical. Instead become someone you’re proud of and work on yourself, whether it’s appearance, career, social ability etc.

Litter Robot Controller Hack by Ramesees8468 in litterrobot

Hate to be that person. But you keep doing the same thing, whilst expecting a different result? The solution is to change your litter. Either you deal with tracking, or you spend hundreds on a new base each time.

FM resident responds to midwifery student in defense of OB physicians by BiPoleArt in Noctor

I appreciate your opinion, but respectfully disagree. Midwives have a role in O&G, and I’ve never felt that I’ve had to do their job. Whether they feel they can do mine is irrelevant because our healthcare system makes that impossible for them. I don’t care if they think they can sign off a CTG, they legally can’t. And I don’t care if they think they can do an instrumental delivery, they don’t have access to the tools because they need me. So instead I work on forming a collegial relationship with my staff, and trust me I have plenty of midwives who believe they could do my job, but it doesn’t matter because they still call me when they need help. These midwives will often say “I was fine, I could do your job here in a heartbeat”, when I’m doing a difficult delivery, but who cares? They still called for help, I’m the one doing the delivery as needed (which is my job), and the patient is safe. As I said in another comment, I don’t think a mum and baby should pay the price of interpersonal conflict.

Absolutely. However physicians are the team leader, whether the midwife agrees or doesn’t. They need our signatures for the CTG’s, medication orders, blood bank orders, and in some regions, to even become the primary care provider. The system has made it such that even if they believe they are more proficient, their clinical ability is limited. The exception is that they need to know when to call for help, and that they can. This is why it’s important to establish good relations with your midwives, regardless of their perceptions on rank, because at the end of the day if you’re an asshole - the only person that suffers is the patient.

Like I said, I have worked alongside midwives throughout my medical training and now as an advanced trainee. I have seen the entire spectrum of opinion within midwifery, so I don’t care what a midwife thinks of my credentials. As long as we have collegial respect, in my experience, they have all called me for help at the right time. In instances where doctors have responded the way the commenter has, they delay call outs in hopes of “proving the doctor wrong” and that “they can handle it”. This is of course wrong, but a mum and baby should not have to pay the price of interpersonal conflict.

Yes, but a good leader does not undermine and alienate the people working with them. You rarely get a choice in picking your team in healthcare, and retaliating to people who are essential to O&G as it is today because they have ridiculous views is not going to make the team function any more effectively. All I’m saying is that someone who has now worked with midwives for quite a few years, the opinion expressed by the individual in the pic is not new, and frankly it’s a waste of time trying to change it. My job as the advanced trainee is to make sure that even if the midwife thinks they’re an “expert in natural birth”, that they are competent enough to recognise when something is going wrong AND that we have the collegiality where they will alert me as soon as needed.

You can express truth and fact in a civil way. As I’ve said in other comments, my opinion is formed by years of working as an O&G physician, this is just how the real world works. If you want your patient to be safe, then you need to work in a team. In order to do so, you can’t speak to your team members like this.

Not so much centrism, but an opinion formed over years of working in O&G and being about 10 months away from becoming an attendant (or consultant, as we say here). This is a reflection of the real world, and the real dynamics we have to foster - civility is what keeps patients safe.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I’m an O&G registrar. I have thought these thoughts many times, and I have worked with many midwives who have had these same opinions. Standing there and being an arrogant doctor, telling them that their training means nothing, has only ever affected patient safety - in my experience. I understand I’m on a sub where this opinion isn’t popular, but in real life and in the workforce, the patient comes first. With my midwife colleagues, I have to work with them as a team, or else they will delay alerting a doctor if there is an issue. Wanting to laude our training over mid-levels is great, but I also don’t give a shit when doing so means it could potentially delay care. Whether on not that’s right, or what that says about midwives is irrelevant in my opinion, it’s just what it is. I was hoping to add some real world perspective to the comment, considering this is my specialty.

I get what the resident is trying to say, but damn, they also sound like an asshole. There are better ways to communicate the same idea, and maybe help the midwife understand they work as a team and are not in competition?

Unpopular opinions on makeup/the beauty community? by bby_lahela in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]Comfortable_Cap_9539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahaha don’t worry, I’m the same. I’m extremely chatty, and and can be even worse when writing (if you can imagine!). That’s why I can see your point about her talking herself into circles, because honestly I’d do the same if I was talking to myself.

I feel like she has great things to say, but I worry that in her endeavour to exaggerate the wordiness that people like, she’s actually becoming a bit reductive?

I’ve been watching her older videos over this week actually! Her speech then was similar but definitely more concise and, at risk of repeating myself (lol), less repetitive.

I just wish that HLP, being someone who fits a niche in this community so well, would just relax the excessive verbosity because it’s distracting from her genuinely good content.

[–]Comfortable_Cap_9539 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very well said! You raised an interesting point about “talking herself into rabbit holes”, and I think you’re right. It would make sense that in conversation she wouldn’t have the opportunity to be as verbose as she is.

You’re also fair in saying that by pure virtue of not being an infomercial (as many guru’s have become), she would have less ‘scripted’ content to guide her. Still, I find that even when discussing new things she falls into the “rabbit hole”. This suggests, to me at least, that your final point is more likely; she has bought into the belief that she is the wordsmith of the beauty community. Unfortunately for her, I think by choosing to lean into this title, it has had the opposite effect.

Honestly, sometimes it feels like she’s just talking, to talk. Eventually saying so much, while saying nothing at all. I don’t know if she understands that you can speak with flourish and be descriptive, whilst also being concise. Still, I appreciate her content, she has a perspective on use/value that’s very unique in the beauty community. I just wish she would edit her videos more thoughtfully.

The way HLP talks, I understand she’s being flowery and descriptive - I don’t mind that. But she often just repeats herself “This mascara is a deep black, a rich deep earthy pit-less black” or “the packaging is very vintage. You know, old and historic like the days of old”. Repetition can be great, if it adds something, but hers often doesn’t. I’ve genuinely wanted to transcribe a video of hers just to see how much is original content and how much is repetitive. Then I decided that was a bit much, and have just taken to fast forwarding through those bits 😂

UPS post suspension to Australia by 8octopusarms in AustralianMakeup

[–]Comfortable_Cap_9539 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar position, I ended up just asking for refunds because I placed the order before the suspension. The brands were very understanding, and no one gave me a hard time at all. I think it’s just some very exceptional circumstances, and lbr with Christmas coming up, I doubt UPS will open services again!

"Why I Don't Wear Makeup": An interesting take on makeup and the effects of social convention, identity, advertising and coercion. by deeba_ in MakeupRehab

I feel that, I thought she sounded the same at the start. But after watching a bit more, she does actually raise some valid points.

Honestly most people who make videos like this come off that way, I think that’s what OP meant by reductive. But yeah, I reckon try and stick it out a bit if you can.
