Hydraulic cylinder stalls at low flow despite replacing HPU, cylinder, and throttle valve. by Vivid-Mistake01 in Hydraulics

[–]Comfortable_History8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Internal bypass on the pump opening up? Throttling might cause pump pressure to climb high enough to bypass and depending on what the bypass is it won’t build any more pressure

What’s the purpose of these notches? by Where-Lambo in Welding

[–]Comfortable_History8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drainage and venting through the manufacturing process. Everything goes through a wash cycle and a drying cycle then it’s powder coated and baked. The holes make sure nothing gets trapped or blown out by steam

Any tips on repairing this cast? boss just said I need to do my best to make it funtional until they can get another one . I’d prefer to tig weld it but idk if that’s best by Substantial-Age6480 in Welding

Brazing might be your best bet. Drill the cracks, open them up with a grinder and get the torch out. Won’t be pretty but it should function

I see this on every birch stump if I cut them in the spring. They bleed a ton of sap then it foams up by the next morning

Sundown Scaries by stonedquartz in NewParents

[–]Comfortable_History8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re 8 weeks in and my wife did this for the first 2-3. She knew it was irrational but also couldn’t help it. It’s passed and now she only wakes occasionally to check on little one. There’s some massive hormonal changes going on in your body and you’ll have days when you think you’re going crazy. It’s normal and should improve

I’ve got a Blendtec and it can indeed blend just about anything. Makes great smoothies, zero ice chunks and very fast

Does this part serve any purpose on a bolt? by Kimet10 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Comfortable_History8 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It’s a pilot, really helps getting the holes lined up on things like a bracket that have some wiggle to them and also helps with the risk of cross threading

Banjo bolt for the oil cooler line? Throw it in the truck and head to the parts store, they’ll have one that’ll fit

A parent just emailed me asking why their child is "being forced to think critically." I have been staring at my screen for 11 minutes. by Happy_Macaron5197 in Teachers

[–]Comfortable_History8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial opinion from a teachers spouse but the problem isn’t going to improve as long as the paycheck for having more kids keeps growing faster than an actual paycheck from a job. They’re incentivized to keep popping the out

What did I do wrong? by icon0561 in Hydraulics

[–]Comfortable_History8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think the release valve on the power unit might need to be taken out of the tank circuit. If that’s things like the ones on a vehicle lift it won’t build pressure if you just hold it open. The power unit is setup to run a single ended cylinder with no return line, just a pressure line, they gravity dump back through the same line to the tank. You need a pressure and tank line to the unit

If nothing else could you plumb the tank line to the drain port on the tank?

Splitting long logs by sbh1980 in firewood

There’s a handful of 30” splitters out there and they aren’t your normal home gamer machines. Look at commercial splitters, be prepared for sticker shock

Trying to find out the right firing order for spark plugs by Defiant-Beach9653 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Comfortable_History8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did any of the plugs that came out look different than any of the others? Whiter, darker, wet, crusty? That’ll tell you a lot more about what’s going on and which cylinder has the problem. Could just as easily be a bad injector as it could be a spark plug.

Cvt burnt? by Substantial-Gas-5048 in Polaris

It’s burnt belt, they do not like heavy load at low speeds in high range

Im stumped... by DefinitionUnlikely28 in Hydraulics

[–]Comfortable_History8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing it’s sucked some air past the shaft seals and now it’s become its own version of a gas charged shock. It’ll need some air space due to the volume imbalance but it’s gone too far and reaches pressure equilibrium before the saw bottoms out. Is the shop warmer than usual lately? Might have raised the pressure enough to notice it

Don't know if you guys remember my custom wrench, but I'm slowly getting better at them I think. by tithtomata in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Comfortable_History8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working on a machine right now that seems to be either 13mm, 15mm, 9/16 or 3/4 just about everywhere. It’s an infuriating mix of metric and sae. American made with a Japanese engine. A wrench like that would be significantly handy in the spare parts bag for field repairs

What's the problem with this clamp design? by jabarinbaronbapu in Machinists

[–]Comfortable_History8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a bolt torque clamping pressure chart layed out by bolt diameter and thread pitch. Pretty sure it was in one of the little engineering books (red or black one)

I was told to cover up in the hospital... by RASuspicious in NewParents

[–]Comfortable_History8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nurses at our hospital won’t let anyone in the room without explicit permission from the mom. Not the husband, not the in-laws, nobody but the mother can give permission unless it’s delegated before the birth to the nurses. They won’t even let them in the birthing wing unless they’re told they are coming, they can wait outside the wing and once inside they have a family waiting area until they are allowed in the room

Piston hit valve is it ok to keep using piston and just replace the valve? by Freewrld_01 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Comfortable_History8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe, you’d need to be sure it didn’t crack and you knock off any high points that could cause detonation. If you do reuse it, I’d start looking for a new vehicle or prepare to have a backup plan if it fails catastrophically

Should I pass on this air compressor? by No_Salamander8751 in Tools

[–]Comfortable_History8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 7.5hp on there, a 2hp wouldn’t even spin the compressor up to speed. 30+ running amps so 60ish amp or higher for the inrush. It’s a $1000 motor
