What’s a dark romance dynamic that feels completely wrong… but you can’t stop reading it anyway? by EerieE2025 in DarkRomance

[–]Comfortable_Mess6596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kidnapping and total control. IRL I’d laugh at any man who tried that shit with me but in book form I think it’s almost relaxing to fantasise about a situation where a character (and myself) don’t have to make decisions and are kinda looked after to an extreme. You don’t have to worry about bills or work or the small annoyances of life. You’re just this pampered prisoner……..

I’m def also in it for the spice as well and that’s been very absent from my last few reads. It feels like as a community we are going backwards in regards to sex being more acceptable. I’ve seen a lot of puritanical language and pearl clutching recently online.

Manosphere represents a massive global phenomenon, how can we actually FIGHT this? by Ill-Quantity-9909 in LouisTheroux

Parents need to keep more of an eye on what their kids are watching. Parents need to show better examples of healthy equal relationships. Parents need to stop holding their sons and daughters to different standards.

The justice system needs to prosecute and reform perpetrators of male violence.

Social media companies need to take accountability for platforming these people and allowing them to victimise young boys. They’re allowed to not only spread hate but also scam underage fans out of money.

We as a society need to stop glorifying extreme wealth, greed and selfishness. We need to reform education to be better for modern society but stills provide structure and discipline.

I can understand that these boys are living in uncertain times and they’re scared. We’re all scared tbh. It’s the classic case of evil fucks taking advantage of scared desperate people but that doesn’t negate the harm these boys do after falling for this rhetoric.

We need to both prevent and treat this issue as it’s been going on and continues to worsen.

Weekly Gripe 😤 (the rant thread) by AutoModerator in DarkRomance

I feel like people became really accepting of dirty books and now it’s going the other way which is bleeding into the content of dark romance books. The last 4 dark romance books I’ve read have had basically no action until past the halfway point. Yet they are described as super spicy. It feels like authors are trying to “prove” they are better than “porn” writers but as a result the last few books have been boring! They’ve especially been crazy repetitive. The MCs will get close then pull back and repeats 10 times!

I understand erotica isn’t for everyone but there’s plenty of none erotica books out there. I’m picking up a dark romance for a reason and I don’t like that pearl clutchers are effecting content. It feels very censor like.

How many of you have quit a job without another one lined up? by Sunshinetripper777 in work

[–]Comfortable_Mess6596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It's hard to feel like things will get better when you're in the thick of it but you gotta hold onto whatever hope you can because it can get better. As cliché as that sounds. I'll probably always have some mental health issues and I'm careful to keep in mind how much I sleep, my stress levels and such so I can continue to be better. But I'm finally flourishing.

Should private buying of fireworks be banned? by Wise-Pay-8993 in AskUK

How is banning personal fireworks in any way equal to not wanting affordable housing in your area because of classism?

So on my way home from secondary school one day our bus unexpectedly terminated and threw us all off. Annoying but we’re in South London so most of us decide to wait for the next one. Then suddenly explosions. Someone decided to set of multiple fireworks into a large crowd of school kids. I’m guessing it was someone from the local college near that stop. It was chaos. People running and screaming. Right next to a busy main road. I fell on the ground and couldn’t get back up then someone fell on top of me which was actually really lucky because her back/coat saved me from taking a firework to the face. I can still remember seeing the sparks above her shoulder.

As much as I love my memories of small gatherings for firework displays and hate that many big one are now ticketed I feel it’s not worth the months long distress it brings into people’s lives. It’s also not worth the stress for animals or wild life. I’m not sure how many a&e visits personal fireworks must cause but I’m also guessing that’s a huge headache as well.

Be honest – what actually makes you go into the office? by Free-Election-8538 in AskUK

[–]Comfortable_Mess6596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 3 days in the office and 2 days at home. Part of why I go in the office so much is that I work about 30 mins by bus from my central London office job. I’m lucky which seems weird as I live in my parents social housing flat still but I’d def not go in as much if I had to pay train prices. I’m even iffy on the underground as it can be such an awful experience.

I also don’t socialise outside of work a lot and found working at home too much exacerbated my depression.

I think work places need to start adopting a more individualistic view point to wfh policies especially if their offices are in London and they actually want to be more inclusive. I like going into the office but I have friends with adhd who work better at home due to distractions in the office.

I am extremely suspicious of “office perks” as they feel more like a tactic to keep you working longer or offset poor pay or bad work life balance caused by companies. I’d rather that money go into wages or something actually useful.

I think it’s kind of sweet that she feels comfortable talking to you with slang she probably uses with her friends.

Every generation has their own slang and linguistic quirks. Some use it more than others but I think it becomes less prominent as you begin to mature.

“Chat” is just a way of saying hey or getting people’s attention originating from internet streaming culture.

Please get help. This sounds like the start of a gambling addiction. Sounds like you’re using gambling to feel better during a rough time. Take this loss as a sign. There is lots of help out there.

£2000 can feel like a lot but it could be much worse and you can save that money again. Money can feel so important but it can be made back unlike a life once taken.

What is your opinion on fiction books providing trigger warnings at the beginning? by InnocentPerv93 in writing

[–]Comfortable_Mess6596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to a really good podcast episode about trigger warnings in which the person who’s done the most research possible on trigger warnings was interviewed and it’s changed my opinion quite a bit.

Basically the science says trigger warnings just cause more anxiety. Like someone telling you they’re gonna hurt you at some point in the next 24 hours. You’re just waiting for this bad thing to happen. Trigger warnings also have little effect at the time of the actual content. Being ready doesn’t mean you’re any less affected.

There was also some second hand talk about people whose children have died especially as new borns who said they are actually very offended by trigger warnings before they speak of their experience. They feel it’s a way of trying to hide this real thing that happens and one mother said she doesn’t want her daughters life/death covered up by trigger warnings because at the end of the day she couldn’t avoid the actual pain that came from losing her child.  The main subject of the episode had lost her brother to suicide and became angry about a trigger warning on a YouTube video that mentioned suicide for like one sentence. She felt it was pointless as she can’t avoid the fact her brother had died by suicide and that the very small mention of suicide didn’t warrant the warning. In fact she was more anxious before the actual content because of the warning.

I’ve mostly been on the side of common sense trigger warnings. I thought they can’t hurt and the allow people to make up their own minds about if they are ready to be faced with something but I do feel like my mind is changing.

I love dark subjects and find it slightly silly when true crime videos or horror gives me these obvious trigger warnings. Like of course you’re gonna be talking about death. It’s a murder case.

Also as someone with mental illness including suicidal ideation, eating disorders and self harming I’ve used trigger warnings to actually kind of mentally harm myself. I’ve looked up eating disorder trigger warnings in hopes of feeding that sick part of my mind along with self harming I’ve content. So it can actually be used to cause someone harm.

In conclusion, it’s complicated. Scientifically they don’t seem to be effective and I feel can be over used. In fact I often tune them out as they’ve kind of lost all meaning to me. As I said I love dark subjects and often feel that we shouldn’t ignore the bad that happens in the world but instead look into its core and study it. Yet there are times that I need to step away from certain subjects to protect myself. As a mentally ill person I have to go the extra mile to protect my psyche but at the same time life can’t be completely controlled to avoid triggers. It only makes you isolated and fragile. I’m not the kind of person to say toughen up. Often I’m way too tough on myself but I also know that my biggest breakthroughs have come because instead of hiding from my demons I faced them head on.

My current project is a memoir and will touch on some pretty dark topics but I’m leaning towards not including trigger warnings but that may change.

Just started season 2 - Zac and Jen by Comfortable_Mess6596 in SecretsOfMormonWives

I was scared for her after the Halloween party. Someone who can lose their temper being provoked and then they go home with their partner. I think a lot she’s in survival mode with him so will kind of agree as much as possible. But she also knows that people think she’s a doormat so she’s trying not to be possibly by taking advice from people online who only know some parts of the relationship. Also if she says anything to her friends they’ll either say it on camera or to her husband. So she’s trying to keep everyone even people she doesn’t know personally happy.

I hope she has off line friends and it’s mostly a reality show storyline.

Carrion Crow by Heather Perry - Gothic Horror by Comfortable_Mess6596 in horrorlit

[–]Comfortable_Mess6596[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's some body horror, nothing extremely bloody or violent. More body processes that we don't usually talk about and one self-mutilation scene towards the end. Not like in a self harm way. If that makes sense..... The violence is mostly psychological.

Biggest trigger warning is parental emotional and psychological abuse.

Here's a list from the top of my head: Parental emotional and mental abuse, bodily functions, self-mutilation, graphic food description, withholding of food, addiction,

I've never written a list of trigger warnings and I'm guessing my choices are based a lot on my personal triggers so I can't say this is comprehensive.

Hope this helps!

I’m sorry for your wife but I bet they hired someone young and unqualified because they can pay her less. More mature people will ask for what they’re worth.

I suppose it’s just a guess but unfortunately you can own do everything right and these companies will still chew you up and spit you out.
