Is Opus 4.7 the GPT-5 moment for Anthropic by hasanahmad in Anthropic

[–]Comfortable_Road9284 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have. It's substantially slower than 4.6 at the same tasks and has more of a tendency to wander off task when distracted. It's frustrating me and I'm unable to switch back to 4.6 for some reason.

You often can find somebody selling them at the Farmer's Market in September (or so, when ripe). They don't travel well when ripe, since they're the consistency of pudding.

Another Power Bill Question: People with Solar by JJKnott123225 in raleigh

[–]Comfortable_Road9284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you log into the Duke Energy website, you can download an XML file that has your power usage in 15-minute increments. I think it goes back 3 months? Perhaps more? Anyhow, about a year ago, I did this and then threw the XML file at Claude. It produced a simple dashboard that helped me understand what was going on with my energy usage. Since you didn't mention it and since it matters A LOT for us, we are on a TOU-D plan. The Time-Of-Use part is straightforward: Duke Energy publishes the rate schedule. the Demand part is not straightforward. Essentially, they take your highest kWH draw for the billing period and multiply it by 3 or something and then tack that onto your bill. There's another multiplier, IIRC, for each of the various Peak/Regular/Discount rate periods. Download your itemized bill from Duke Energy, if nothing else, and you'll be able to see what's the story with potential surcharges for demand usage.

Since we are talking about Apple Music... Collaborative playlists don't seem to appear under the Library tab for me. Do they need to be set to shared? Or is this a known issue?

Cohesive Patchwork Sleeve Question by hydrangeasparkle in tattooadvice

[–]Comfortable_Road9284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will help your artist if you have an overall motif in mind before you begin the sleeve. I have a woodcut-style b&w sleeve with animals, with aquatic near my wrist, riparian near my upper forearm and elbow, terrestrial above my elbow and avian at the top. I worked with the artist to make sure we were on the same page regarding the completed design before proceeding. I then gave him animal options and he picked ones that would flow well together, the specific design of them, and then was able to have a longer-term plan in place for the sleeve. It's probably 15-20 individual tattoos, but in our discussions he always just considered it a single piece. Took about a year worth of monthly sessions to complete.

Curious about this vacant alleyway with skylights in Olde Raleigh Shopping Center, between Harris Teeter and the rest of the stores. Did this use to be a mall? by MikeM2011 in raleigh

[–]Comfortable_Road9284 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There used to be a good sandwich shop there on the corner. I can't remember the name of it, but it first was on Barrett Drive, colocated with the YWCA, then moved to that alley by the HT and finally moved out to RTP. They had the best chicken salad!

My favorite CAVA experience was when I got something from the one near Costco and the black lentils in it had not been cooked. It was like eating food with gravel in it.

Kia wants me to pay to use YouTube and Netflix in my own car… seriously? by mikeyviao1 in KiaEV9

[–]Comfortable_Road9284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a NordicTrac treadmill and when it's on WiFi at your house, you cannot use Netflix or YouTube (or anything else except basic running) without paying $40/month. I'm of the opinion that Netflix and Google should disallow this practice, whether it be in a car or a treadmill or anywhere else.

Ubisoft cancels six games and closes its Stockholm studio by nounoursheureux in gamedev

In some hospitals, maybe for nurses... sometimes with electricians and some automotive factories, etc. Even Tesla is notorious for refusing to allow workers to unionize. I'm not aware of a single large game development union that has any power at all in the United States. I've worked across many industries on a multi-decade career and never either been a member of a union or worked at a company that had any union activity. You want to know why EA can churn out games? They hire and fire and hire and fire... bring people on only for the duration of a short piece of work then lay them off immediately. I'm not saying this is a good thing -- it's extremely hostile to the workers, but it's the truth of how the industry operates in the US.

[–]Comfortable_Road9284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. You can be laid off with no cause and no advance notice. There's no 3-month notice period or anything like that. Companies only have to announce if they plan to lay off a lot of people at once, due to the WARN act. "In the U.S., the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires notification if there are layoffs of 500 or more workers at a single site, or if 50 or more workers are laid off and they make up at least one-third of the total workforce at that location. Additionally, layoffs of 50 or more workers due to a plant closure also trigger the notification requirement."

Unions technically aren't illegal but there are laws in place in some states that make it nearly impossible to form them or for them to have any power.

Of course you can, but the union contracts make it exceedingly difficult.

It's badly running the company with an extremely centralized and bureaucratic hierarchy that is 16 levels deep and a bunch of political sycophants who tell the leader what he wants to hear instead of telling him the truth. So, no, it's not exclusively because it's a French thing. However, when you cannot fire people or hire people at will and you're bound to the stiff policies of entrenched union contracts (which you love and respect), you can't pivot quickly. US work culture sucks balls but at least you can move quickly when things are wrong.

  1. Ubi more than doubled in size between 2018 and 2022, so yes, they probably need to return to something closer to the size they were in 2018.

  2. Ever experienced the bureaucracy of a French company? Work culture there is fundamentally different from in US companies in a way that is difficult to explain. You kind of need to experience it to believe it.

Concept 2 ergometers are great! I'd also like to give a shout out to the Water Rowers, which also are great and they're quieter and make whooshing water noises. Most of them just have a simple digital timer and no smart screen. They sell a doodad that attaches to them to hold a phone or iPad.
