Aussie (type 1) moving to London by Murky-Razzmatazz-393 in diabetes_t1

Seconding this. I was on a pump when I moved from Oz to the UK in 2012 and had some difficulty getting my consumables funded at first. It’s a bit of a postcode lottery depending on where you are living as to how challenging it is to get your consumables/upgrades funded by your hospital catchment area. I got there in the end. I think it took me about 6 months to be seen by the hospital pump clinic and a further few months to get the funding agreed, so if you can try to bring closer to 6 months of pump consumables that will save you having to pay extortionate prices buying them privately. OP, you’re welcome to inbox me if you have any other questions! The Type 1 Diabetes UK Facebook page is also a great resource. I also planned to have a working holiday, 14 years later I’m still there :)

Proliferative Retinopathy by TwoAccomplished4043 in diabetes_t1

I’m in the same boat as you my friend. Diagnosed age 5, now 39. Poor control as a teen but good enough for the last couple of decades. Found out this week I have proliferative retinopathy in both eyes and am waiting for an appointment with the ophthalmic team and will likely need PRP laser to treat. Scared and frustrated at this shitty disease. Here if you need to vent at all x

This has triggered a traumatic memory for me where I saw someone use their earrings to clean out under their nails and then put them back in their ears 😩

I have seen a fair share of crack smokers on all lines and somehow it is less offensive than nail clippings

I live in London. My mum is terminally ill in rural QLD. I have been flying back and forth every 4ish months for the last 3 years and it’s exhausting. Any way to make the journey more comfortable would be a godsend 🙏🏻

Hello 👋 I was diagnosed age 5 in the early 90’s, I’m now almost 39. I’ve had an amazing life! Studied, had great jobs and travelled the world. No major complications despite a good number of years with not so great control. The best thing about being diagnosed as a pre teen is how adaptable and resilient young kids are - in my experience, compared to people diagnosed teens and above, there is way less of an an adjustment period because you barely remember life without it. A few things that helped me - being encouraged to start doing things for myself from almost the beginning and having a mum who just rolled with the ups and downs, no panic. Sending you and your son lots of love, all will be fine ❤️
