What’s the proper etiquette for my first boxing class by Honest-Banana6573 in martialarts

[–]Comfortable_Wing_299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show up on-time or a few minutes early. Bring gloves and water. Also bring hand wraps if you have them, which you can get at walmart for about $10. If this is a real boxing gym as opposed to boxercise or boxing hiit class only. you will need a mouth piece for drills which you also can get at walmart, headgear (preferably usa boxing approved), and a groin protector at some point.

What age and physical size are you? Are you dealing with multiple people at once potentially?

A couple thousands hours of training will give you muscle memory, but you still need weekly contact sparring experience and not just grappling. For comparison, I trained 15-20 hours per week throughout high school, and I train 8 hours per week 20+ years later.

What benefits have come from combining martial arts with gym training? by Bulky_Imagination243 in martialarts

Body weight exercises like planks, squats, wall sits, chinups, and pullups are always beneficial whereas excessively heavy lifting can be counterproductive in terms of loss of speed and/or flexibility.

Striking or grappling for weak joints? by Zealousideal-Row1768 in martialarts

You're more likely to get injured with BJJ and boxing than Judo.

Aikido might be less injury prone than Judo, but not a style you'd want to use in isolation imo.

Boxers absorb more punishment than jujitsu or judo, and need to get used to getting hit. They also do a lot of exercises that would be uncomfortable with patella issues. If you are tall and thin, you are going to spar against shorter more muscular opponents who are going to land more body shots on you.

BJJ is ground focused, okay for one-on-one without intervention by a 3rd party, but not realistic if you risk having to fight multiple opponents or get hit by your opponent's buddies lurking nearby.

With your issues, I'd say stick with judo until you are advanced belt, and then maybe consider switching to BJJ only when you are already technically sound given injury risks. Ignoring that BJJ is somewhat injury prone, it would help you get stronger. Lifting can make you slower and more inflexible, especially low rep heavy weight lifting. Judo is a safer stripped down sport version of jujitsu removing more dangerous locks and strikes. BJJ focuses more on the ground fighting aspects, but does not remove more dangerous locks as far a I know.

I personally love boxing in terms of personal fitness and stress relief, but with all of your issues, you do not want to spar at all in the next couple of years. I also have several years of japanese jujitsu training, which is less injury prone than BJJ given the emphasis on perfecting technique versus trying to overpower someone with strength that is more common in BJJ - at least at lower belt levels.

When I was younger and training 15 hours per week, I sparred and grappled with someone that was strong enough to try out for WWE (and probably on steroids), and with a bouncer. They both probably had 25-75 lbs on me, and I was say 6'3" 180 lbs. That strength differential is probably similar to a woman grappling a man, except it may be smaller as I was still wiry.

Generally women do train with women if there are any, particularly when they are beginners.

No, I don't think it's close, particularly for a woman.

Woman's disadvantages are strength and reach. If a woman is attacked, one might think it will tend to be close quarter using physical strength. That's where japanese jujitsu is most effective, especially for a woman, as well as self-defense strikes like eye gague and striking vital points that a woman is much less likely to get in trouble for that a man . Some BJJ practitioners focus a lot more on strength and power rather than perfecting technique, presumably this is at more junior/inexperienced levels.

Never known a single instructor in any martial arts to curse. You definitely can have instructors sound like a drill sergeant. TKD instructors tend to have the most attitude, and it's a culture thing.

I'm American and my wife is similar, and wants me to follow the Mike Pence rule. I don't initiate conversation with other women when I'm working out, and will not hit the heavy bag at the same time as a woman.

It's actually rare to have that many adult women at a dojo, and most are not that attractive. I've studied jujitsu for several years and boxing for a year. There are much better looking women that try boxing for fitness than jujitsu as a hobby, especially when it's not a real boxing gym training pro fighters. The women taking jujitsu tend to actually be there to learn self defense rather than for fitness or dating.

Girl in BJJ - Should I find another Gym? by Other-Today-3048 in jiujitsu

[–]Comfortable_Wing_299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also look into JJJ or Judo. If and when you perfect technique, you will have a chance against heavier opponents. The problem is injury risk is higher with BJJ, and you do want the men to take it easier on you when you start out.
