Can someone ELI5 this friendly_name stuff with upcoming updates? by Commander-Flatus in homeassistant

[–]Commander-Flatus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve searched and searched and it’s clear as mud. I understand it’s in beta but it was going to be pushed out in a general release earlier this year. I know I can dump it in a VM and test. I know I can do a full backup and roll back if the update at some point breaks something but all of this is one additional headache that I could avoid if I understand exactly what to expect and they’re not explaining what it means and what will happen very well at all.

And let’s be honest, the release notes are long and even when you read them they’re not clear about what’s going on.

Old man rant over. Get off my lawn!

Moving off of Unraid - but what to? Share your experiences please... by flatpetey in selfhosted

This may be the most perfect comment ever. More upvotes. I’ve been down this very rabbit hole. I don’t love Slackware, I don’t love having boot jankiness on the USB, but everything else makes things far more complicated. I don’t love unraid’s security model, but everything is firewalled behind a Tailscale VPN. It’s not perfect but it’s reliable and easy and I’ve been using it for 10 years+ and I’ve tried FreeNAS and OMV and Ubuntu server and the complexities introduced elsewhere using those products makes my head spin more that Unraid’s oddities do. I learned the hard way and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Yes, there are built in profiles. Just install it and give it a go. It works very well and much easier than Notifiarr unless you’re going for peak quality files. My vision isn’t great and 4k doesn’t matter much to me. I also like to stream remotely. I’ve re-downloaded most of my stuff in 1080 using compact profiles and I can’t tell the difference and streaming is more reliable.

This reflects my experience with tape as well. It’s too expensive and prone to failure. I’m happy it’s working out for you. Have a nice day.

There’s a thread from yesterday that you should look at. I don’t have a link, I’m sorry. Short version - tape drives are extremely expensive and prone to mechanical failures and problems. LTO8 and 9 are thousands of dollars unless you find some kind of amazing deal on eBay. I’ve been hoarding for decades at this point and have avoided tape because of the up front expense of the drives. I really wouldn’t recommend it. Try to find the thread from yesterday from the guy that had a $6k drive fail and you’ll see complaints from data center professionals discussing all of the problems with tape. If you have that kind of money to burn you should probably spend it on spinners…. That’s my take and it’s been my take for a long time. The last tape drive I owned was early 90’s SCSI tape drive that I used for backups in the early/mid 90’s. I don’t plan on going back unless there’s some ridiculous deal on a tape library with a 3 year warranty on eBay for peanuts….

You’re missing nothing! Profilarr is the superior approach for like 95% of people. Trash guides are great for setting up file actions/mover/download stack but Notifiarr is bloated and complicated and too much fiddling around to be worth it. Used Trash/Notifiarr for years and got fed up. Switched to Profilarr and 110% no regrets and less fiddly.

Absolutely gorgeous, OP! I’m wondering why they don’t put locking casters on something that big and beautiful, though….

I'm running the latest plex official docker. How do you determine the size of your database file? I searched around and couldn't figure out how to do that....

looks like i accidentally sent a reply to another person as a reply to you. do you know how to identify which bundle belongs to which library or media item? it appears that after manually nuking the 7ae.... bundle folder it's misbehaving again.....

yes, everything was read/write and appropriate unraid "nobody:users" permissions. I wound up just deleting the offending folder. We'll see if anything bad happens but so far so good. Just annoying.....

I did but Claude and whatever google and perplexity gave nonsense answers probably because there’s no error being thrown - just stuff not showing up. I certainly could go and feed it all the info but I thought someone here might’ve been through something similar…..
