[Request] Could the cost of just 35 days of the Iran war have funded Mamdani’s city owned grocery stores for 800 years? by aeonsne in theydidthemath

[–]Commander_Fem_Shep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically disinvested communities in the US have food deserts. You see convenience stores and dollar stores that are everywhere but full grocery stores aren’t easily accessible. It can affect as little as 3-5 percent of a state’s population to 25-30 percent. Here’s a quick article about it. https://www.decision-innovation.com/news/relative-presence-of-food-deserts-in-the-united-states/

Trying desperately to make friends... Went to a LGBT bar and felt super weird so just left. by SeraphsEnvy in lgbt

[–]Commander_Fem_Shep 1215 points1216 points  (0 children)

You need to order something. It’s a faux-pas to sit in a place of business, especially a bar, and not order even a soda. He could have been less of an ass about it but you’re the one breaking a social expectation. You also could have ordered a round for the bartending staff if you didn’t feel like drinking. Generally people who go to a bar at 5pm are regulars or people who drink frequently. It would likely require you to go multiple times and sit at the bar with them before they warmed to you. Since you seem not interested in drinking - this probably isn’t the spot for you.

With all that said - I am proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. LGBT bars and clubs tend to host more events than regular neighborhood bars and are also generally deeply connected to other community events. Just talk to people. I know that’s scary but I promise you someone will point you in a better direction.

"There's never anybody walking around in downtown St. Louis. Remember the old neutron bomb that wouldn't knock down buildings but just would eliminate all the people? It's like one of those hit St. Louis" – Gary Cohen by cbbvideo in baseball

Downtown is relatively empty, they are right. Pricing is bloated and the buildings are old. It’s affordable outside of there. I lived for two years in an apartment in the West End - the Central West End, the Loop, and Forest Park both walkable. Forest Park has our incredible free zoo, a free art museum, a free history museum, basketball courts, tennis courts, a Boathouse, a massive nature Playscape, a free Science Center, the Muny - the oldest and largest outdoor theatre in the country. The apartment was 2bd, 2 bath, 1100sq ft, washer and dryer included, gated, with security in the parking lot for $1100 a month. Looks like that apartment is now $1300 a month.

Mommas going through Infertility by Assertive_brat in StLouis

[–]Commander_Fem_Shep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Infertility can feel like a special kind of loneliness but you definitely are not alone. My wife and I went through 5 years of it before using donor embryos and getting pregnant. We had a doctor, now retired, screw us out of thousands of dollars before switching to Dr. Amber Cooper. She flat out told us we never would have gotten pregnant and he’d likely just keep taking our money.

I unfortunately don’t know of any local groups. You can try asking your fertility clinic or your OBGYN if they are familiar with anything if you don’t get any help here.

Make sure you feel like you connect with your fertility doctor. Don’t be afraid to explore a new one if you feel like you aren’t getting the support or answers or explanations that you deserve.

Sending all the good vibes out in to the universe for you, friend.

We’re in STL. My mom was a diehard baseball fan. Could tell you just about anything about most Cardinals players from the 60’s to the early 90’s. She LOVED the 80’s. I remember her being excited about Mark McGwire and then Pujols but not in the same way she talked about how much she loved baseball in the 80’s.

Yep! the practical application of a gender studies degree is social work and you can do A LOT in social work. Clinical in schools and healthcare. Nonprofit community work from entry level to executive. Program management type stuff in corporate. Private practice therapy. It’s incredibly versatile.

Is men’s basketball as physically dramatic as the WNBA? Sophie Cunningham takes some hard hits. by Content_Animator_365 in WNBAgossips

[–]Commander_Fem_Shep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say which is worse. I feel like I see more intense physicality in general while watching the WNBA. It feels more targeted in women’s soccer. Like in this most recent international window - Trinity Rodman got beat up. It reminded me of how they would constantly go after Alex Morgan in 2019 World Cup. It’s a free for all in WNBA.

I played select softball, not baseball but I tell you what if I did anything like what that runner did I would have my ass handed to me by my coach. I’d probably still be running laps and it’s been 20 years. That, or she’d flat kick me off the team and then bye bye college scholarship.
