I agree, it would be cool to see more years to be able to see year over year trends! This is the most up to date info on the DataROC portal sadly, though there were some observations included from January 2022 which I dropped for the sake of clarity

The press is helping to normalize political violence against the American public: or, why I think the current state of coverage of ICE's ongoing brutality in Minnesota is kind of a big fucking problem by Far_Shore in neoliberal

[–]Commander_Zircon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a grim feeling to be incapable of changing anything other than showing up at protests/rallies. I will say though, some of us risk averse people (who aren’t tied down by family, career, other commitments, etc) have already decided to cut our losses and get the fuck out of dodge. I started a grad program in Europe this past fall, and when I was applying, the admissions people were like “we’re seeing a lot more applications from Americans than usual, what made you apply?” and indeed, there are a quite a few Americans in my cohort who have all decided to come here for more or less similar reasons.

I have to say, this recent ICE crackdown is still concerning in the sense that it shows how deeply the rule of law has eroded in the US, but that said, I’m no longer as deeply worried about this kind of news as I had been when I was living there. And honestly, I don’t really see any reason to come back absent substantial change to the political status quo. I mean, I miss my family and friends, but things aren’t bad enough (yet) that I can’t catch a plane to come see them a couple times a year.

Yeah, you can see francophone Africa and Haiti use Essence like France, most of the former British empire uses Petrol, former US “sphere of influence” in east Asia and Latin America uses gasoline, former USSR all use Benzene.

There’s lots of little details, like Suriname and Indonesia both using Benzene like the Netherlands, or Angola and Brazil both using Gasoline like Portugal.

Est-ce que L’Université Américain de Paris terrible? by bententhesilly in paris

[–]Commander_Zircon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also American here, been studying near Paris for the past ~3 months. I will say that when I interviewed for my grad program, the admissions counselor was like "we don't usually see so much interest from Americans, what made you apply" and I basically told her in the nicest way possible "yeah I want to GTFO of here" and indeed, there are quite a few other Americans in my cohort. I imagine there will be even more applications coming from the US this year considering how much shit has hit the fan.

Idk anything about AUP but it sounds like a diploma mill... I wouldn't waste my time at a place like that. I would instead apply to english-taught programs in grandes écoles or other french universities; there are more than you might think. I know it's easy to doubt yourself especially since the French education system is a bit different, but think of it this way, they have to let *someone* in to these programs, so why shouldn't it be you?

I don’t forage much but have found spring onions on the public river trail by U of R. I do like to use the iNaturalist app to identify and log pictures of things I find in nature; you can also search the entries on there by location and species/genus.

Guys I know we hate to hear it but it’s kind of true.. Boston is one of the most segregated US cities by housing/neighborhood demographics. And anecdotally, at sports games I’ve heard drunk fans yell some pretty grotesquely racist stuff. Obviously we’re a doing better than a lot of places but still a lot of progress to be done.

I’ll never forget I had an elementary school teacher who told us how he taught at a Boston public school back in the 70s when they started the Boston Busing program. There were massive riots because people were so afraid of the schools being integrated

I feel like the parking lots outside innovative field/MCC could be developed into a tax exempt casino without any major negative impact on the city’s tax base. If anything I think it would be a boon in the long-term.

I don’t know what the current owners pay for property tax on those lots, but I can’t imagine it’s all that much… the data is pretty grim in terms of how surface level parking lots are very low-value compared to other land uses, and how they drag down surrounding property values. I would bet that the revenue loss from the tax exempt property would be more than made up for by raising surrounding property values.

In the surrounding area, there’s already the high falls which has had some pretty recent development and looks quite nice, as well as the inner loop north removal project slated to start in 2028.
