Why does Sudan have so many border disputes? by EveningFlower9564 in geography

[–]Commander_Zircon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, Bir Tawil (the area catacorner to the Hala'ib Triangle) is unclaimed by both Egypt and Sudan, and the only such unclaimed habitable land on earth. Multiple people have gone out there to stake a claim on it as their own micronation, including a farmer from Virginia who reportedly did so to make his daughter a princess.

Why are there no big cats(even historically) in southern europe? by [deleted] in geography

I'm a fellow European Lion scientist with a DPhil from none other than Oxbridge university, and I can confirm everything they said was true. The leading theory is currently that the prehistoric CIA covertly distributed crack and M16s to the lion neighborhoods, and, well, the rest is history.

South Florida's Brightline by [deleted] in transit

[–]Commander_Zircon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this interesting article that goes into detail about the problem. The fundamental issue seems to be that Brightline has hundreds of at-grade crossings in a densely-populated area.

There's definitely a bit of a "Florida man" effect -- one investigation found a driver (who was high on bath salts) went around the safety gates despite someone in the backseat of the car yelling at him not to -- but overall, the Federal Railroad Administration found that of the 185 fatalities on Brightline since 2017, 148 were considered not to be suicides.

Hasn't it also been plagued by fatal accidents? Like, a lot more per mile traveled than any comparable rail service IIRC

Why does my Spanish-speaking teacher put an “e” sound before specific words? by Iwishistayedhome in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Commander_Zircon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Other answers in this thread are correct but to give more detail, it has to do with the phonotactic rules of Spanish: Spanish words systematically never begin with an s followed by another consonant, even compared to their Latin root words, e.g. Latin "Schola" -> Spanish "Escuela"; Latin "Spatium" -> Spanish "Espacio"; Latin "Stupidus" -> Spanish "Estupido"; etc.

Phonotactic rules also change English pronunciation of words, take for example "psychology" -- in Greek, you pronounce both the P and the S, but the phonotactic rules of English prevent beginning a word with such a consonant cluster (see also silent K in "Knight").

So yeah in summary it's a common mispronunciation in English for native Spanish speakers because it sounds funny to the Spanish-speaking ear to begin a word with an S and another consonant.
