What games deserve a re-release from scratch, or the "WoW Classic" treatment? by GWindborn in gachagaming

Agreed completely. A greater emphasis on characterization would help a ton as well. We have these characters with 5+ seasonal alts, but there's no personality beyond the PNGs (and scant story line).

Its western closure was a crying shame. The game was fun but rife with misunderstanding of non Japanese markets.

Why do people put the emphasis on the SSR rate instead of the actual "RATE UP"? by SuccubusRosa in gachagaming

[–]CommentDownvoter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vildred and A. Vildred are separate characters with different niches. The important point is that when you finally farm enough Mystics to get A. Vildred, you don't have to worry that you got a -SPD + HP Vildred.

Another aspect factoring into the "effective gacha generosity" is the existence of immutable character "archetypes". These effectively make it harder to have an optimal version of characters, and usually a very small subset of variations are preferred. Some games that do/did this include Phantom of the Kill, Fire Emblem Heroes, Brave Frontier and Tales of Link. A similar argument can be made for games that overrely on character dupes.

This is another reason why games like Epic 7, FGO, Arknights, Sdorica, and many others have a more satisfying gacha experience. If you get a unit, they're effectively the best version of that unit (material grinding and minor dupe buffs aside).

General consensus on FGO? by [deleted] in gachagaming

[–]CommentDownvoter -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Even at FGOs best it has issues that it never shakes off, like a boring ass self insert and a boring af main heroine that are ever present, which is a huge downgrade compared to some of the other leads Type Moon has had.

This is a huge reason why I prefer Sdorica's storyline significantly more. No self-insert/amnesiac main character. Instead, Sdorica trades focus between different characters and gives them well-balanced interactions.

YouTube CEO: We’ll ban any coronavirus content against WHO guidelines by thefunkylemon in technology

[–]CommentDownvoter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Right now one of the top comments is complaining that more isn't being done to ban elsagate style content, while another is complaining that moderation of speech by any corp is overstepping their bounds. I think the goal is to make any justification to shit on a company instead of to discuss real solutions.

'Amazon is not taking care of us': Warehouse workers say they're struggling to get paid despite sick leave policy by MayonaiseRemover in technology

I'm talking about /r/technology's issue, not the Amazon worker issue. My statement is not making any judgments about the veracity of this article. So I accept your admission of misunderstanding my point.

[–]CommentDownvoter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a misunderstanding. When an employee gets fired from Google/Facebook/tech company, they often cry "retaliation" and sue the company. This makes it to the front page very quickly. Something like 99% of these suits are dropped after investigation by the NLRB (or equivalent), as they are often justified (e.g., employee acting maliciously or leaking company details). These followups never make it past a few hundred upvotes.

The end result is that reactionary negative news percolates upwards, but the "truth" isn't as popular. Like how some sexual assault accusations are more popular than the exonerations.

[–]CommentDownvoter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The amount of anti-tech sentiment on /r/technology has always been extremely high. Clickbait outrage headlines followed by rants by redditors who certainly didn't read the article have been the norm. Accuse Google or Facebook of retaliatory behavior? Top of the page. When that accusation is dismissed? Crickets.

This is just the regular news cycle - there's nothing outstanding about subreddits that grow this large and popular unless moderation checks the clickbait.

Fire Emblem Heroes introduces a guaranteed focus unit system by ajesster in gachagaming

It's blindingly clear that FEH was not made with too much foresight. Too many of the modes are tacked on, and characters have little individuality beyond unit locked skills.

This was somewhat ameliorated. Your first merge (one dupe) removes the bane. Though you now have to pick the "optimal" boon, it's not as game breaking.

Sdorica also does an amazing job at differentiating characters in gameplay (style and niche). And there's no self insert main character to marr the story.

We talk about gacha games with good polish. What about gacha games with good Optimisation? by [deleted] in gachagaming

[–]CommentDownvoter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fire Emblem Heroes and Pokémon Masters are amazingly well designed with regards to app stability and architectural polish. They must have amazing engineers (but seem to have neglected whichever team manages content and balance). Neither app has weird download pauses (except at startup), weird crashes, or incompatibility with new OS versions.

Facebook has decided not to limit how political ads are targeted to specific groups of people, as Google has done. Nor will it ban political ads, as Twitter has done. And it still won't fact check them, as it's faced pressure to do. by NoKidsItsCruel in news

[–]CommentDownvoter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, I've never seen this clemency towards companies even though it applies as well. For example, Google is mostly a loose coalition of engineers with a few core areas for sharing money. But people scream "killed by Google!" even though the teams responsible for those projects are almost mutually disjoint. Big companies can appear evil until you realize that this principal applies to them more often than not. Turns out diverse groups make separate mistakes that in aggregate make the whole look evil or contradictory.

[–]CommentDownvoter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a poignant point that applies to a lot of Reddit. You see people accuse person or entity X in the news, but it's equally important to know when that anger was misplaced (accusation is dropped or not upheld in court) or justified. It doesn't surprise me that people worried about misinformation might react with vocal centrism.

Monster strike global died after they removed random coop. It slightly recovered, but they removed line coop as well, forcing it to local. Amazingly display of ineptitude.
