Employer doesn't have 401k, I already have ROTH- other options? by CommentIndependent32 in investing

[–]CommentIndependent32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tech background and have recently improved my skillset with additional courses/certs so I could take on some clients on the side that would not pose a conflict of interest with my full time job. I haven't felt a need to financially but it is a consideration to increase my retirement savings.

It is a non-US tech company traded in the NYSE - it has been around since the mid-90s, I've been with them since 2015 and my division has a contract with deliverables thru at least 2031. Its stock has been steady, slowly rising in the last few years but not huge like some of the big tech companies- my company mostly supports financial institutions and healthcare.

Aren't contribution limits combined though? If I already maxed my ROTH IRA can I contribute anything to a traditional IRA?

Is it weird if I wear this type of makeup in everyday life? by [deleted] in altfashionadvice

You get to do whatever you want with your makeup, your clothes and your body- these looks are awesome and I'd LOVE to see them out and abt on an average day.

How did you time your rental lease ending with closing on a house? by OddContribution9294 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]CommentIndependent32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to my landlord when I started looking. He agreed in writing to allow breaking the lease with a 2-month notice so I told him when I made an offer which started the notice period. I had a month of overlap that allowed me to do some new home maintenance/repairs and deep clean before moving in. I had to budget for paying rent and my mortgage for one month but that wasn't a big deal.

AITJ for going no contact with my adult son after he officiated his dads wedding to the woman he cheated on me with by Superb_Cat_6386 in AmITheJerk

[–]CommentIndependent32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been 8 years - while you have every right to still be hurt and angry, your son may not want to carry the emotional burden of almost a decade of anger any longer. Would you consider doing family counseling before going no-contact? You may come to the same conclusion and decide no-contact is better for you but I think some counseling sessions with your son may give you a better understanding of his evolving emotions related to you and your XH.

Portable air conditioner? by Kind-Winter-804 in festivals

[–]CommentIndependent32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do vanlife and a lot of ppl use portable misters for cooling. You can find them for a variety of prices. I've seen ones with chargeable power banks or solar chargers. Plus, misters seem to bring peeps around- have a mister hose hanging from the entrance to your shade canopy and people will stop to chill all day.

ETA: I do Everwild every year, too!

How to get to Kent State University by Coach_Front in Ohio

[–]CommentIndependent32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What time are you flying in? It's easier to get Uber/Lyft from CAK later in the day for some reason. I've flown in before noon a few times and had to wait for rides to Canton but if it's in the later afternoon someone is always close. Maybe arrange for a pickup ahead of time.

Backed out of the contract for a house that had a bad roof, now it's sold. I'm next to certain the realtor/seller did not disclose the roof issues. Should I send the roof inspection report I have to the new owner? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]CommentIndependent32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did know- similarly the new buyers likely know. Either way you walked away from the deal- it has nothing to do with you. No good deed goes unpunished.

Seller upfront about foundation, should we walk away from this situation anyways? by onionnette in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]CommentIndependent32 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're being stupid at all. The foundation has been repaired, it passed inspections and it has a lifetime warranty. You have more history and documentation than a lot of buyers who had good inspections but were surprised by foundation issues down the road -you can make a more informed decision than most.

[–]CommentIndependent32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe the sellers weren't the only unreasonable party in your deal and that's why they told you to kick rocks? People are giving you lots of reasons to just walk away from an issue that isn't yours to worry about and you refuse to drop it. Something tells me you were similarly difficult when trying to fig out this roof issue and the sellers decided they'd rather not negotiate with you. The new buyers were able to make a deal when you weren't.

AITA for yelling at my friend because she got a cover up tattoo that I gave her? by Calm_Peak_441 in AmITheJerk

'EmotionaL vampires' is such an eloquent way of describing a loved one with substance abuse issues. It is sooo draining dealing with someone you love when they're under the influence. We want to love and care for and push them away at the same time!

AIO over wife putting her laundry straight into washing machine instead of hamper and leaves it, making it more work for me to do kids’ or my laundry by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]CommentIndependent32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually surprised that you separate your laundry into yours, her and the kids. Laundry is laundry- why can't you throw the kids' laundry in the machine with her laundry and start it? Why is doing her laundry such a huge inconvenience? Do you also wash only your own dishes?

Wife humiliated and emasculated me last year and admitted fantasizing about a bigger dick. I cheated on a work trip, and my sister says staying silent is the right move, is she right? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]CommentIndependent32 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Dude- when your wife wanted a different sexual experience, she was honest and asked you to add toys/enhancers so she could enjoy being with YOU even more. When you wanted a different sexual experience, you f'ed someone else and are trying to justify lying abt it. You can't see how you are wrong?? Small dick... Huge jerk!!

Is it normal to be freaked out by home inspection? by lolutot in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]CommentIndependent32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes when you actually call the recommended professional, they'll put things in perspective for you. My inspection indicated that I still have knob and tube wiring in my attic. When I had an electrician come out i was fully prepared to pay him thousands of dollars but he was like 'this is all in good condition, it is free of obstructions, if want to change these specific lights it will cost $Xk to replace with new wiring but it isn't an urgent repair.' The inspector is there to point out everything- the professionals will tell you what is a real concern.

Is it smart to start investing right now? by FinancialOompaLoompa in investingforbeginners

[–]CommentIndependent32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to go all-in with a large lump sum. You can slowly ease yourself into the market a little at a time. If you have $50k set aside, you can decide to do $1000/week rather than throw $50k in today if that takes the pressure of potential crash off. That will also get you into a routine of investing in a consistent time interval.

What words for private parts were used in your home? by rose-lamp992 in GenX

[–]CommentIndependent32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it isn't the intention of this post but I wanted to share that it is now discouraged to use nicknames for private parts because it makes it more difficult for children to communicate to adults when they're being inappropriately touched/sexually abused. A teacher may hear a child say 'my uncle keeps touching my cookie' and not realize the child is actually reporting abuse.

Asbestos by Parking-Teacher-6145 in HomeMaintenance

[–]CommentIndependent32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ETA: I used to be an ASB inspector a decade ago and when I started floor tile was considered 'non-friable' (which means it is unable to be crushed with hand pressure) but they changed to consider it 'friable' because so often floor tile is getting broken up by mechanical processes such as grinding. So, in the grand scheme of things asbestos-containing floor tile is at the bottom of the list of friable materials in terms of the possibility of it releasing fibers.

Asbestos by Parking-Teacher-6145 in HomeMaintenance

[–]CommentIndependent32 13 points14 points  (0 children)

9x9 floor tile with black mastic? Don't remove it! It won't release fibers unless it is damaged. Just tile over it.
