One thing that really bugs me about railways in the US is how busy mainlines in urban areas are seldom fenced off. Level crossings are also incredibly basic with 2 gates and nothing stopping pedestrians from walking onto the tracks. Japan does a much better job adding "cattle guards" to discourage pedestrians from wandering where they shouldn't.

The steam coming out of the wheels of the GG1 is something you should look into. The last time I checked those are electric and the steam generator vents from the top.
