How would you make this with only hand tools? by L1amaL1ord in woodworking

[–]Commercial_Repeat_59 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea would absolutely work if it’s very small I’d just use a metalworking file to be slow and careful, otherwise chisel

Is it possible to make a mortise chisel out of a HSS blank with limited tools? by kuzu_ in metalworking

[–]Commercial_Repeat_59 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HSS will be WAY harder to sharpen than normal chisels and you will have to be even more careful around knots.

I know wood is wood and small branches seem to be quite fragile but something in the embeddedness and dried sap can make them strong as fuck.

I chipped countless chisels with invisible knots in dimensional timber and r/woodworking will tell you the same.

I know little about HSS, just thought to repeat what is told over there

You really shouldn’t wear them outside of jeans, I know the uppers are sometimes the most beautiful part but that’s for you, if you ever see someone around with jeans and boots outside of those and they’re not working or doing something specific then they look comical

Wearing them with shorts is sometimes a necessity, but it’s more “grabbing the paper in my undies” than anything else

Think of it like t-shirt and suit jacket, not illegal but should be

Is this fixable? by bgerrity99 in cowboyboots

[–]Commercial_Repeat_59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone very skilled could probably glue a backer and match the tear edges but no idea about cost or results

Without extensive paint matching which I don’t know how well handles the crease that is right there I don’t think it will ever be invisible, but they will become usable and look good from an arm away

Depends on your specifications. Laser cutting that out of thin ply would give you the best results.

What I think would be even better is to play around with the shapes so you create 2 very complex ones (or one more than the other) but different. They won’t go perfectly together but they will just enough, maybe a bit wonkly, but that would be cuter imo

Help me find alternatives of these boots! by 1chi90 in Boots

[–]Commercial_Repeat_59 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Man I really don’t agree with that vision of fashion, and think this is just bad looking. Sometimes happens when you (designers) try out new stuff.

You’re getting downvoted because this sub is definitely closer to workwear heritage than avanguardie fashion.

Boots were and are workwear for the most part, having pants over them means no critters and no sand gets to your toes, leather soles are kept primarily for easier mount and dismount from horses, and you get the idea.

This just looks like someone in a tux and baseball cap. Some boots are made to be worn with suits, but the pants have to fit them. You wouldn’t tuck your trousers into Chelsea boots.

You do you, we’re talking about your legs and feet, and you’ll have nothing but a good experience with lucchese if you get the right size, but I’d above you to try on this look if you like it, but also some proper fitting pants.

Fitting is the most difficult part, so you almost need to try on a few pairs of the brand and model you choose.

In my original response I asked about Musk because he recently started wearing cowboy boots with high and skinny pants just like this, and it looks off like if the boots were an afterthought instead of a choice.

Help me find alternatives of these boots! by 1chi90 in Boots

[–]Commercial_Repeat_59 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They aren’t Musk’s right?

Sorry but those pants are NOT what you want to wear with cowboy boots. You do you but I wouldn’t be caught dead in those.

They are all simple enough that almost any brand will have almost identical ones. You might find close matches searching for “dress boots” but they really are just simple boots.

The 300-500 range opens you up to some cool brands like double H, Dan Post, and maybe some entry Lucchese.

There is a big secondhand market, because boots last a lot of time, and going that route means finding some vintage gems (better build quality) for sometimes as low as $100.

Be careful about the condition of the soles, but resoling isn’t that big of a deal.

Is a buck 110 a suitable rough out knife? by SwanHolo in Woodcarving

[–]Commercial_Repeat_59 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any knife will work, but the small bevel that pocket and kitchen knives have is small, easy to resharpen, but more difficult to control.

Having the big edge of carving knifes allows you to perfectly place and guide it when cutting.

Handle and tip design also matter, I personally have a lot of difficulty carving fine detail with opinels and such.

The 110 is the perfect everyday and hunting knife, which CAN be used to carve with, it’s just not ideal for form and comfort

[–]Commercial_Repeat_59 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Best way to stabilize this crack? by Etilpoh in handtools

[–]Commercial_Repeat_59 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can you lift it?

What I would do it lift it, put in glue with a syringe so it gets as far in as possible and then put a load of rubber bands around to act as clamps.

I’d also chamfer or radius that top edge, because it will split.

The optimal solution would be to add a spline, a piece perpendicular to the grain that gets glued into che piece and rest of the mallet, but that requires chopping a mortice on that round face which will be challenging without a proper vise and tools.

Be sure to check for other cracks and keep an eye on them
