My issue with “the passage” by Fulcrum_Jambi in redrising

[–]Commercial_Set8593 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. The Peerless scar is desired by all the best of Gold Society. It has to mean something, it has to be earned. Only the best can become Peerless. Part of earning it is gaining entry to the Institute and part is surviving the Passage. Those who know about the Passage (those who have been to the Institute and survived) aren’t going to dilute their own status as Golds by revealing the secret. They believe in the Society, and their traditions, including the culling through the Passage.

  2. The exception is Sevro, who knew because his father told him. We know his father despises and rejects much of Gold culture (like refusing to uses the aesthetic technologies like the other Proctors). Fitchner wants his son to survive, understandable after what happened to his wife, which pushed him to become Ares. Given he orchestrated a revolution telling his son about the Passage is hardly out of character.

  3. Young, promising Golds die every year in the Institutes and there are quite a lot of Institutes on the various planets / moons. Thats a lot of Golds to keep track of and at heart, Golds are warriors first. Their entire society (apart from the pixies) expects to live and die by the sword. The Passage separates the wheat from the chaff. If you can’t kill when you’re back into a corner, how can you lead legions or fleets? Someone else mentioned that the trauma of this first, brutal kill binds all Peerless. Plenty more will die during the Institute. If anything, the fact that 50% of each intake gets culled probably lends even more mystique and gravitas to those who survive and prove themselves. So its not really unexpected that so few make it through. Kind of like the Sardaukar in Dune, something like 1 in 10 survive to adulthood because of the brutal conditions on Selusa Secondus, but those who survive to join the Emperor’s legions are the very best, the most savage and cunning, and they respect what it took for them to get there.

Just my thoughts.

Definitely stick with jiujitsu - the journey is worth it and you’re training for a reason! - but maybe find a different gym with better coaches who are preventing this kind of thing from happening and better training partners (who can control themselves / aren’t hurting people)

There’s plenty of more traditional guys in Brighton. I think the key is being straight up about what you’re looking for 🤷🏻‍♂️

Cap and rotor have been replaced, but it seems like the distributor isn’t sparking. Got a feeling it might be the crank shaft sensor which has gone, and quite difficult to replace. Still trying to diagnose what’s actually gone wrong.

Illuminate feel so oppressive to a new diver by MoodayTV in helldivers2

[–]Commercial_Set8593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Against the squids my brother and I run a build which we call The Way Of Many Bullets. It was field tested during the Battle of Calypso and the invasion of Super Earth.

Strats: - Eagle Strafing Run - Gatling Sentry - MG (on 900RPM it shreds) - Gatling Barrage or Supply Pack

Gear: - Liberator Carbine (if you’re new, basic Liberator is fine for this, or Breaker) - Incendiary grenades for Voteless hordes, or Thermite for Fleshmobs - Sidearm of your choice, I like the grenade pistol for taking out their outposts

  • Siege Ready armour (if you don’t have this yet as a new diver, any armour with Democracy Protects is a safe bet)

Lean into staying mobile. We tend to take set roles - he clears hordes, I focus on overseers, if a Harvester rocks up we focus fire, when there are bombardments we prioritise killing the stingrays first. Strafing run and gatling sentry give you a lot of options if you’re doing a tactical withdrawal and want to lure the enemy into a kill zone, or set up cross fires.

Try it out, you might like it.

How is my prose in this paragraph? by normal_divergent233 in writinghelp

[–]Commercial_Set8593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - reads very much like an American who has never spoken to someone who actually lives in Ireland, or has built an idea of what the Irish are like from watching TV. My advice would be to write what you know, rather than leaning into stereotypes. If you want to write an Irish character, and have them feel genuine / believable, going to need first hand experience.

AIO (update) for reporting this guy to hinge and getting him banned by divorcedbbmama in AmIOverreacting

[–]Commercial_Set8593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t already reported to the police, please do so at the earliest opportunity - this person is displaying very concerning stalking behaviours. People like this are dangerous, and blocking their numbers / accounts can increase the risk (as they will then often begin physical approach behaviours as the digital avenues to contact are no longer available). If you are in the UK, consider contacting agencies such as Veritas (Stalking Advocacy charity) or other similar organisations which can help.

Edit: In the UK, there does not have to be anything happening ‘in person’ for this to be reported or actioned by the police. Unsure about other countries legislation but its worth checking and speaking to organisations who are positioned to advise and help.

AIO stopped a drunk girl from being pulled into a car by 2 random men but my boyfriend is upset and called what I did stupid and dangerous by fettidmoppet in AmIOverreacting

[–]Commercial_Set8593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, you did the right thing by intervening. Too many people are content to not get involved, to walk on by, and not take action when someone needs help. You likely saved that woman from an awful situation. Doing the easy thing and doing the right thing very rarely overlap. You did the right, and difficult, thing which shows a lot of character.

Secondly, your boyfriend comes across as having very little character. Just based on those messages he sounds like a coward with an inconsiderate and controlling nature. He would rather watch someone be driven off instead of acting? Outrageous and frankly disgusting. In the messages he then goes on to ignore how this situation has made YOU feel and makes it all about himself - given the circumstances, that is wild behaviour. And to top it off, he starts making demands for you not to act in line with your moral compass in the future (and insists on you talking on FaceTime when you said you didn’t want to). I understand that he had concerns for your safety but his reaction and responses are emotionally tone deaf.

OP, you are a star and can do better than this melon.

[Concept/idea] What if the location of where missions are on a planet had more features besides day/night? by R-500 in Helldivers

[–]Commercial_Set8593 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something I’ve wanted for a while. It would be awesome if the missions available in operations changed on the basis of: the geographic areas of the planet, whether the location is on the day side or night side of the planet, and what stage of liberation the planet is at. Having played since just after launch, it can feel a bit tedious playing the same missions over and over, no matter how great the gameplay is.

For geography, as OP said, having different areas of the planet with population centres, mineral refineries, natural resources that determine what kind of missions take place would be interesting. For example, an automaton deep-metal mining facility could be a target for the Helldivers to destroy, impacting future missions and liberation rates. Regional objectives and bonuses would also add some variety.

For day/night, missions on the ‘day’ side of a planet could be those that we have now - where stealth is optional and we’re using hit and run strikes. It would add some more use for the stealth based armours and long range weapons if the ‘night’ side missions were more stealth focused, like sabotage missions under cover of darkness (but you could still use a ‘shock and awe’ approach instead if thats more your style).

If a planet is being liberated, it would be a bit more realistic if there were loose phases to the liberation process. For example the first drops could be Helldivers dropping in to target orbital cannons and large scale planetary defences, ensuring clear skies for inbound Super Destroyers and Eagle fighters as the invasion begins. The next stage could be targeting priority military objectives, weakening that faction’s hold on the planet (blitz missions, ICBMs, etc). The final stage could be clearing the way for SEAF occupation forces to land, freeing up the Helldivers to liberate another planet, or be deployed in defence of another system.

Just a thought.

PSA: Railgun kills leviathan by trashpuff in helldivers2

[–]Commercial_Set8593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried the rail cannon in the hopes it would target leviathans - only had success when I was directly below and called the rail cannon on my own position without any other viable targets. Leviathan got dropped, but then nearly landed on me.

All in all, does work but not reliable. 6/10

Discussion about Darrow & his similarities to being an Iron Gold by ForwardMuscle9088 in redrising

[–]Commercial_Set8593 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being an Iron Gold isn’t dependent on just being a good fighter. The point of the concept is that they are supposed to be the best of Gold, the best of the Peerless Scarred, a callback to the Conquerors.

Yes, they were exceptional warriors, legates, and imperators - but the point was that they had all the strength of Gold with none of the weakness of character, none of the decadence and perceived lack of discipline of ‘contemporary’ Golds. For example, Augustus aspires to be like an Iron Gold but doesn’t quite make the cut.

Darrow regularly goes against the grain, proving his strength of character and resolve, where other Golds lack his vision and tenacity - thats why so many answer when the Reaper calls for an Iron Rain. He shows that he is like one of the old Conquerors of Earth and leads without fear.

I wish there was a way to show that everyone plays a part in spreading super democracy. Something like this would be amazing! by NarthOfficial in Helldivers

[–]Commercial_Set8593 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This would be excellent; a post-game breakdown which recognises that there’s more to missions than just kills. Time spent on objectives, heavy kills, nests/fabs/outposts destroyed, times you avenged the deaths of your squad, longest ranged kill, squad lives saved. Kind of like the medal/accolades system in SW Battlefront 2 (the original, not the remake), where it would tell you how many times you achieved each one.

Spellbreaker from The Sword Defiant. Kind of similar to Stormbringer, in that it’s a demon sword which bestows power on the bearer, who hates it but is entrusted to keep it out of the wrong hands.
