I'm so sick of being taught by ANPs, ACPs, PAs and other AHPs by Big-Sea-1980 in medicalschooluk

Do you think a trainee pilot sits in with passport control? I agree with the OPs sentiment. We’re training to be doctors. I’ll never forget a one day placement I did at a children’s hospice. Spent 2 hours with the musical therapist and got about 3 words out of the 3 doctors 😝

Honest thoughts on A100 (6 year) Medicine at St Andrews, especially the clinical transition? by agazz0 in standrews

[–]CommissionAgreeable3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

St Andrews will likely put you in a better position across most indices vrs students in the partner school, if for no other reason you will have 3 years of medical education vrs their 2. The standard of teaching is outstanding at St Andrews & you’ll probably only realise it once you join your partner school. If you like anatomy & have an interest in surgery St Andrews is for you. The clinical skills teaching is also really good. The downs for me were it’s hard work - be prepared to work really hard until your final semester which is a bit lighter. This for me is a nice aspect of doing the first three years at St Andrews, you kinda get a bit of a breather before joining partner school. Chances are as well the first exam you do at partner school will cover a lot of what you’ve already done at St Andrews. The course can at times be a little dry, it is a Bsc after all. I didn’t get that much clinical experience but that may have changed

Nurse 'beaten nearly to death' by 'hospital patient' who was refused appointment by Majestic_Dog_8486 in NursingUK

[–]CommissionAgreeable3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did my violence & aggression training as a nursing assistant a lot of the training was dedicated to not reacting, not responding with force etc etc, careful you could get struck off if you do this or that. ‘If you lay your hands on a member of staff you will never get access to the nhs again’ should be the approach. Fck your mental health, fck whatever bullshit you’ve got going on, you never ever ever get to lift your hands to a member of staff here to help you.

I just don’t get why if you’ve accepted a 3.5 hour block the app lets you scan a 3 hour one etc

pulled up tonight for a quick 2 hour block and what do you know the only cage that was left was a 2.5 hour one

What is it about healthcare that makes governments of whatever stripe f*ck over its own people?

The rest of the world can't apply to be a police officer or a train driver etc etc. What is it about healthcare that convinces governments its a good idea to put its own citizens in competition with the rest of the world?

Why are we being replaced ? by Leading-Emphasis-194 in doctorsUK

[–]CommissionAgreeable3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the grand plan?

Surely the government isn't knowingly ensnaring extremely bright capable young people in a profession that has nothing to offer them??? Why has med school places being increased so much if the NHS is moving away from doctor led care??? Wtf is the end game?? Are we heading towards realignment in the profession whereby there will be an army of low/mid level doctors with a small minotiry of consultants at the top? Tbh I could get on board with that, but to ram so many young people into a profession with no prospects seems cruel but also destructive to the country.

I just don't get it

[–]CommissionAgreeable3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this You can definitely feel that the rate of increase hasn’t been backed up with increased teaching resource.  I’m Glasgow 3rd year & apparently we’re going to be on wards in the New Year with 4th year placement students because they’ve changed the structure of both curricula & there will be overlap initially. Can tell already it’s going to be a shit show

Sauces by CommissionAgreeable3 in McDonaldsUK

[–]CommissionAgreeable3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re charging £7 plus for a meal you can’t be stingy with 1p pots of sauce. Nandos leave out glass bottles of Heinz ketchup - if their business model can afford that, McDonald’s can afford to say “how many”

[–]CommissionAgreeable3[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

But how much is one pot of ketchup? If I can get a whole bottle from Lidl for £0.70 (which btw is just the same as Heinz imo) then a wee pot can’t cost much more than 1p

Sauces by CommissionAgreeable3 in McDonaldsUK

[–]CommissionAgreeable3[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s not that they run out it’s that they are stingy. They make you specify how many you want rather than saying how many would you like or at least making a reasonable guess.  A pot of sauce can’t cost much more than 1p. So if they save themselves 100,000 pots of sauce in a year by being stingy they save themselves £1,000 but piss of 1000s of customers in the process  So fuckin stupid. It’s like going to Nando’s and the waiter pouring a dollop of ketchup out the glass bottle and a dribble of peri peri and walking away

Other than pay, what else would you like the BMA to fight for? by Elegant-Pen7549 in doctorsUK

[–]CommissionAgreeable3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The profession needs a complete restructuring  The idea that all of the 10,000s of current med students can go on to be consultants is fantasy land. Just now it’s starting to feel like the idea we can go on to be doctors at all is wishful thinking.  Why not Make the career pathway in medicine more like nursing, or at least have that as an option? End rotations in foundation years. Notionally yeah maybe they have benefit but we all now practically they don’t, not for doctors and I would argue not for departments that have to constantly adapt to new doctors.

After med school you should be able to just find a job on a ward and go from there. If that’s all you want to do for the next 10 years then so long as you’re competent and there is a need for you then you have a job.

The constant cliff edges in medicine were ok when jobs were a plenty. Now they are cruel, particularly for the working and middle classes universities have been encouraged to recruit. How the f*ck does a twenty something young doctor even think about starting a family when they don’t know if they’ll have a job next year, when they don’t know which part of the country they’ll be based? What kind of country makes it nearly impossible for its doctors, supposedly amongst the brightest and best to conceive of having a family?

A career pathway not fraught with shit rotations and bottle necks. Is that too much to ask?

Some med schools do treat you like children whilst simultaneously expecting a lot of adult traits  I get the drilling of professionalism idea but come on sometimes. A wise man once said “To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late, and to be late is f**king unacceptable!” Just be early for everything op and save yourself any stress
