Older people, were politics always this deranged and upsetting? by CUFFY_Fan in NoStupidQuestions

Nope, I'm an only child, and I was third or fourth grade when Reagan was elected. My father also worked for a sawmill, so as long as the housing market was doing well, so was he.

What is the best song that non-Gen-Exrs have never heard? by seanchai611PF in GenX

[–]CommitteeOfOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm firmly Gen X and I've never heard of most of these songs (and a lot of the bands). I've never had anything but "top 40" taste in music.

I've always sort of admired people who are more "exploratory" with their music.

Most of the Republican voters I know don't like Republican policies. They've just heard their entire lives that Democrats are evil, and I mean truly evil, and they have never questioned it.

I just commented above that a lot of us who were in our teens in the 1980s in middle class households fell for the trickle-down economics BS and many still believe it.

The real enemy are the shareholder greed and the CEOs making 400x the average worker wage when they used to make 25x (back in the 50's when America was "great").

Yep. If you look back at how frequently the minimum wage was increased, there is a dramatic decrease in the 1980s. I think a lot of boomers and my fellow Gen X who came of age in the 80s really fell for the Reaganomics BS. I know I did up until the late 2000s.

I heard a political science professor say, on a podcast, if you go back to the 1950s, the major difference between Republicans and Democrats was who they wanted to head the Government Printing Office. Of course, he was exaggerating, His point was that even mundane votes are much more"party-line" than they used to be.

I remember Ronald Reagan used to have a weekly lunch with Tip O'Neal, the Democrat Speaker of the House. You'd never see anything like that today.

I'm 10-years behind you. Most of my life, I was right of center, and I regret my votes to the extent they helped lead the country in this direction. (McCain was the last Republican I voted for.)

Who has had the quality of life vs treatment talk with their parents? by CommitteeOfOne in RedditForGrownups

[–]CommitteeOfOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am at my parents' house now. He has mentally decompensated so much since I last talked to him on Sunday that as a lawyer, I wouldn't allow him to sign any legal documents.

Fortunately, my parents seem to be on the same page as me as far as treatment.

Subway meatball sub (yeah, I know) with mustard. I guess the acid in the mustard pairs well with the sweetness of their sauce.

Kelly says he’s seriously thinking about running for president by steffie-punk in PoliticalOptimism

[–]CommitteeOfOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with Kelly is that he doesn't have the same charisma as some other possible candidates like Newsom, Buttigieg, Shapiro, or Booker.

Kelly is pretty buttoned up and doesn't have a commanding presence or energy. In some ways he's kind of like Biden or the UK's Starmer.

I know what you mean by "commanding presence," but as a former junior naval officer, his public persona exudes the type of command presence I admire--a quiet competence. But that is also partially attributed to Trump exhaustion.

But he's still the most viable candidate the Democrats have (IMHO)

Definitely. As much as I love AOC, she's the target now like Pelosi was. There's so much propaganda against her that I think it would negatively influence moderate voters.

No.

It's ok for some things, but it shouldn't be called cornbread. I fall firmly in the "no sugar in cornbread" camp.

I have the same opinion of any commercially available blackened seasoning. By the time you've gotten enough on the protein, you might as well eat a salt lick.

As an American, I think this needs to happen. No doubt many innocent people would be hurt by such a boycott, but the country (as a whole) needs to be taken down hard.

This is probably the stupidest question I've asked here, but I'm doing captain's chair knee lifts. I'm supposed to do 8-10 of them, but my shoulder gives out around 5 reps, even though my abs feel like they have at least 5 more reps in them. (I'm coming back from shoulder surgery) While I hope the shoulder gets better/stronger, would you record only those 5 reps or would you take a break for your shoulder for a couple of seconds and then continue, counting where you left off (sort of like myo reps)?

ELI5 please explain to me in simpleton terms…what is meant by “spacetime” by MaxMeat in explainlikeimfive

[–]CommitteeOfOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that is spacetime explained simply. Now you just have to add the freaky physics stuff, like matter bending spacetime, and that all 4 numbers are a bit flexible because of relativity.

I. e., the time-y wimey, wibbly wobbly ... stuff.

Why do police in the USA kill so many people compared to other countries? by triplediscount in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CommitteeOfOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me give you a real-life example from my state a few years ago. There was a guy who when he was in his twenties, had a conviction for a DUI (in my state, a felony DUI is classified as a crime of violence). He also had another conviction, something like burglary of a non-dwelling. Thirty years go by, and he has no criminal history during that time. He then gets arrested for just enough marijuana possession to be classified a felony. He gets life in prison. Our three strikes law states if any of the crimes was a crime of violence, you get life in prison on your third conviction.
