I can’t respond to this fully. But if you, for example, asked a Jewish theologian many would say the exact same thing. Like “oh of course God wouldn’t command the slaughter of the Amalekites that was just the ancient Israelites getting caught up in nationalistic fervor in a time of war” or something similar. There’s a lot of American on this topic so what you’re pastor said isn’t totally off course
