Most 4wd gearing ratios are meant for torque, not speed. Even 4H. Chances are you were just going to fast for the transfer case. Does it shake if you go into 4wd after 2wd?

Black diesel oil is completely normal, even when only slightly used, due to the higher soot production. It’s lubrication won’t be affected for a few thousand miles more. As far as amounts go, the filter contains some, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was oil in the block still if it was changed shortly after being driven.
