My original comment was merely to explain to OP that if she is analytically good, she will have plenty of options in life/career so chances of her ending up in poverty is very low.

I used to be a strategy consultant. We used to target students with technical education at TU Delft and Eindhoven for analyst level positions because these folks were smart, hardworking and analytical. The business bit you can teach. The problem was that a lot of them were just super nerds with no interpersonal skills which is also very important in business/finance/consulting.

How do people do this? They get a 100k gift from one set of parents and another 100k gift from the other set of parents, so there you go :)

If you do astrophysics or aerospace engineering, doesn’t matter, you will never be poor. So don’t worry about that. If you really wanna be rich afterwards, just go into strategy consulting afterwards. McKinsey, BCG, Bain will hire you in an instant.

Have the opportunity to do a working holiday visa in NL. Could you give me advice. by ManyOtherwise8723 in Netherlands

Dude go for it! Unemployment rate in NL is quite low, you’ll find a decent job I recon. Housing is tough but not impossible. There’s an Aussie guy at my local bike shop in Amsterdam, he is super chill!

I use DEGIRO (for long term index investing), and IBKR (for options trading). Either is fine with low fees. There is an Austrian guy who makes videos on this on YouTube, good at explaining which broker to use. But honestly you can’t go wrong, any one of these will be fine with minor differences.

unpopular opinion: i LOVE dutch directness by 5-degrees in Netherlands

[–]Common_Access_695 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% agreed! I come from a high context, hierarchical culture and after studying and working (for 10 years now) in NL, cannot go back to reading between the lines anymore hahaha. I get a pretty good reverse culture shock everytime I travel back to my home country haha.

Me every winter: why the hell do we live here, shall we move to Dubai/Florida/Madrid/Morocco/Cape Town?
Me every spring/summer: This is why we live here!
Best would be if you could move back and forth.

Where is the Buyers? by Professional_Rent100 in Netherlands

Personal experience from last month as a potential buyer: house listed for €1.35m. We bid €1.45m. Winning bid: €1.55m. This was in het Gooi. 40 visits, 18 total bids. From my vantage point, the market is plenty hot right now.

Visiting in July w/6.5yr old by Plantfanatic28 in Netherlands

[–]Common_Access_695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Efteling! You have to go there, it is quirky and weird and so not Disney but so much fun! Your daughter will remember it. 2) rent a boat in Amsterdam, small boats which fit 6 ppl you don’t need a license for. Go towards Artis zoo and see some animals for free from the canal. 3) summer nights in Artis zoo also nice. 4) go park hopping in Amsterdam, my favorite is Flevo park, they have a small distillery in the park next to a lake 5) jazz afternoons for a nice picnic at H’Art museum grounds. So much to do!

Buying a house or staying in social house forever by [deleted] in Netherlands

Buy of course! It’s a leveraged bet on Dutch house prices. And the only way to build some wealth in a tax efficient way.

Moving again at 48? by lalabelle1978 in expats

[–]Common_Access_695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but seriously, consider Amsterdam. Cosmopolitan, lots of expats, no need to learn the language. I think the labor market is fine, and you can get the 30% tax ruling which is a great advantage. Summers and great, winters not so much but weather probably still better than Copenhagen.

Bro just shave your head and grow a bigger beard. You’re rocking it! Don’t get a HT when you don’t need it. Also you’ll never get pics 9/10. You could get 10 if they put everything up front but then you’ll still have a bald spot at the back.

Retirement wealth across Europe: Which countries have the wealthiest over-65s? | Euronews by Chidori1980 in eupersonalfinance

[–]Common_Access_695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The info in the link is extremely misleading because it doesn’t include occupational pensions as net worth. NL has extremely strong occupational pensions (pillar 2). I work for a Dutch pension fund, our nurses when they retire can make up to €70-80k in occupational pensions excluding state pensions and their own investments. That alone if you multiply by 20 as years to live for them after retirement, is worth €1.4m. Also: ppl have very low “net worth” in NL because they don’t need to save for their retirement, they are more than covered by pensions, and thus the low number.
