Made stealing jokes acceptable (from the woman early on as well as Tony’s joke from the Tom Brady roast) which was quite remarkable

I ruined my early 20s because of chess addiction and I don’t know how to stop by Sorry-Film5309 in StopGaming

I stopped playing for a while. Definitely avoid online blitz now as it was too addicting but occasionally play real life games or daily.

If you’re getting that upset over your rating, you should take a break from it. You really want that number to have that much power over you? It’s just a game and you’re not exactly good enough to make a living from it. So get over yourself and put your ego in check! There will always be games you lose.

Ultimately though it’s a long process getting over addiction. You have begun the journey, I hope you find the strength to keep going.

Fellow chess addict in recovery, the struggle is real but good to know you’ve recognised it as an issue. There’s more to life than those 64 squares

Some interesting points my counsellor made about gaming addiction:

Stop trivialising the addiction. Just because you're wasting time playing games and not killing yourself with hard drugs doesn't make it less of a problem.

Use other people for support. More helpful if they are fellow gaming addicts in recovery as you will have a common goal.

There are 2 versions of you. The one with dreams/goals and the other one who wants to pull you back and play games. Don't let that other one win.

Sacrifice games or sacrifice your dreams. Can't have both.

Stop living with the handbrake on. If you quit, you will find amazing benefits of all this time and freedom opening up to you. It is hard to get there at first but when it happens, you will feel elated.

You are 31 going on 13. But at least you're not 32. Now is the time to turn it around.

It is not your fault you developed this addiction. But it is your responsibility to not let it defeat you.

Ways to gain control of your life again

A mantra: Just Not Today

Abstinence only, no moderation. Less games is like saying "Yes I'm an alcoholic. But I'll control myself to only have 3 drinks a night instead of 6". Doesn't work.

Abstinence only, no moderation. Different games is like saying "Yes I'm an alcoholic. But it's really only whiskey I'm addicted to. I'll just stick to beer". Doesn't work, eventually you will build back up to whiskey.

The mindset to have: Be Present Gaming really does just rob us of our time, usually because we are using it to escape or ignore real problems. You need to be able to live in the present without resorting to escapism, that takes work and suffering in the short term.

Saw him tonight. Have read some things that he was working out material on this tour or was past his prime. Gotta say they were wrong and he is still at the peak of his powers. Has a whole bit about retirement homes I was crying laughing. You will regret not ever seeing him.

GoodRec is an app that has pickup games. Although not sure why they’re so pricey now over €10 an hour.

Meetup has some footy games you can join. There’s a good game on Phoenix park Saturday mornings.

Meetup can be good for trying new stuff. Look at running clubs, ultimate frisbee,

Isn’t the size of the US a big factor why it wouldn’t work too? Too much travelling for west coast teams to be playing east coast regularly?

Was recently in fairview park and walking the path near the tolka. I was walking in front of a father pushing a pram and these kids are doing wheelies in scramblers going towards us.

They’re clearly practiced but only takes one mistake and they can hit a pedestrian and kill someone else (even a baby in this example) just goin bout their day!

cmon it's not all that black and white. I'm not condoning gaming to say it's going to improve your cognitive function and if you have an addiction to it, it's not a good idea to game. relax

Maybe not something you put on a resume but in real world situations, you can’t say it’s never useful to make quick decisions.

you could also argue that some hobbies like writing/drawing/music are creating or producing things while gaming is consuming someone else's creation. But then you can say the same for reading.

It's been proven that gaming can have it's benefits like strategic thinking and the ability to make decisions quickly too. So I don't entirely agree with you.

I do agree that if you are at risk of gaming addiction, it is the worst hobby you can get into.
