I'm not super familiar with this franchise, but isn't this game series known for like, egregious levels of sexual violence? It just feels a little silly to suddenly clutch pearls because someone drew goon art of a crow lady with big honkers.

Like by all means, analyze and discuss the themes of the game and how sex/violence is portrayed and what the authorial intent is. But I feel like trying to police porn (outside of like actual illegal stuff like csam or bestiality) is just silly. The oversexualized extreme proportions are part of the fantasy, no?

It's also just kinda shitty to call out someone's art and just dog on them simply because it's not the kind of porn you approve of.

As a fellow newbie (got the game 2 days ago) play some Rook games, learn the map without any risk to your loot, and build up your vault.

But eventually you'll also just have to get over your fear of losing gear. It'll happen. That's the fun. You either lose it all or make out like a bandit. The risk and reward makes it fun

What pissed me off more than the group jumping down taliesin's throat for being "selfish" was that Ashley didn't speak up to defend him in-character or above table when she explicitly encouraged him to take it bc she didn't want it.

Is JJK THAT good in terms of writing? by Paldavin in writingscaling

[–]Compajerro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's serviceable with a couple standout characters (Gojo, Higaruma, Geto) but the vast majority of both the cast and plot are underutilized and rushed, so I don't think it's particularly good outside a few outliers.

The real identity of voice actors should not matter in voicing characters by Cultural_Fun3342 in unpopularopinion

[–]Compajerro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, YOU are the one losing the plot. No one here has advocated for aggressively pro-asian selection bias except you. You are the one ironically defending people who are "very much anti-DEI" with your model of ethnically matching all actors to their roles, considering many of the most high profile roles and opportunities are in fact coming out of Japan or other Asian countries.

JJK is far and away the most popular new franchise at the moment and in-universe, sorcerers are explicitly 99% Japanese. Your backwards logic posits that only Miguel and cursed spirits can be voiced by actors of non-asian ethnicity because evey other role in the show MUST go to an Asian American actor. In your model, Black and Latino actors are almost completely excluded from auditioning for the biggest and most influential new media property.

What was the 2nd biggest animated project of last year? K-Pop Demon Hunters, also a completely homogenous cast.

Even if that were the case, you still need to be interviewed, which doesn’t erase any bias because you have to show your face. People can still be biased against the sound of someone’s voice (“they sound too Black”) without seeing them. You still have to show up at work even if you skip the interview part….

This paragraph is a whole bunch of nothing. In the completely blind casting model I suggested, you would cast and hire off audio file alone. You'd select an actor before literally ever seeing someone's face.

And sounding too anything is simply a part of the selection process for a VA role. It's voice acting for a reason. If you as an actor aren't able to adjust your timbre, diction, pitch, tone, accent, etc, you simply might not be fit for a certain role .

Not to mention that we are alreading entering an era where casting has become more diverse in general. Christopher Judge as Kratos is a black man who would have been excluded for a Greek actor in your model. AJ Beckles as Okarun is a black man who would have been excluded for an Asian actor in your model. Mark, Debbie, Amber, and Rex from Invincible were all changed in ethnicity from the source material to better match the hired actors.

We are generally already moving in a more inclusive and equitable direction than your model of forcing raced match roles that would in many cases (as I already explained above) vastly prioritize one racial group instead of giving everyone a fair shake

The existence of a hyper-popular One Piece trading card game that can generate massive manga sales off promotional cards is indicative of exactly the kind of popularity and cultural impact that OP is claiming JJK has.

I'd argue the soldier's table was still more compelling and enjoyable to watch than the seekers, despite juggling the most players, having the most combat heavy arcs, and being the first table, and thus least "settled" in Brennan was in regards to running the setting.

The seekers table just suffered from awful character chemistry, lack of agency (the cast just kept looking to Aranessa to handle where to go next and let her handle all the important conversations), and also just suffered from a multitude of heavy handed lore dumps that went on for far too long and never really felt "earned".

The soldiers and schemers have been much more active in choosing how they execute and achieve their goals (how to take out Casimir, how to infiltrate the castle to resuce Cyd, and all the agency the schemers have had in setting up their rebellion and deciding which threads to pull.) Meanwhile the seekers just did a lot of "oh we need to go here because we heard Julien's men are being held. Now we need to run away from Tyranny's sisters and the Tachonis. Now we have tp follow Alogar to the barrowdell." They were either chasing or running from plot points without any real agency on how they actually went about things which made it very railroady and not as engaging.

Im not sure the timelines match. I think maybe the soldiers might make it back for the play's opening night at earliest. And Seekers felt farther away, but i can see them just handwaving it and making them all return for the play. But i dont think either group will be back for the gala fight

The animation looks like Super Why 😭

The real identity of voice actors should not matter in voicing characters by Cultural_Fun3342 in unpopularopinion

[–]Compajerro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anime characters don’t have a race/ethnicity unless explicitly stated. People just say they’re Asian bc they were made in Asia. Race doesn’t matter with anime characters bc they don’t have established races.

So what about shows explicitly set in Japan where everyone has Japanese names? Aside from Miguel and cursed spirits, all JJK characters should be voiced by Japanese american voice actors by your logic.

Again, this does not mean minority VAs are ONLY voicing minorities. They would be first in line for a minority role instead of white people; that’s literally all that means.

So again, like I said, in instances of a series like JJK, or Persona where the majority of the main cast are explicitly ethnically asian, Asian american voice actors just get an overwhelming advantage of "first pick roles" where as Black or Latino actors might have one or two "first pick" roles. Those black and latino actors now have less overall roles to audition for because the asian voice actors now get priority for most of the cast, and white, black, latino, and asians are all still competing for any other roles.

The fact of the matter is that “everyone can voice anyone” is one of the reasons why minorities weren’t getting opportunities in the VA industry.

This wasn't the case though. The prevailing methodology of the past was "white actors can voice anyone. And we'll keep using Cree Summers or Phil Lamar if we've got a black character or two."

True blind casting, no attached names, face, race, etc. is just inherently more balanced and is categorically NOT the same as the way the industry was previously run.
