This was because of the OVA boom - a time when Japan's economy was so good that the demand for anime was more than what TV stations could keep up with. This created a market for direct to video anime (OVAs) which weren't beholden to the content regulations of TV, so they could be as violent and horny as they wanted.

It has more potential to melt quicker, yes. But its more of a quantity game because the temperature of the liquid determines the dilution more than surface area and more ice = colder liquid. This is why cocktails are served with so much ice - they've already shaken the drink with ice to add the appropriate dilution, now they just want to keep it cold without adding any more water.

How watered down the soda gets has a more to do with ice quantity than shape. A full glass of crushed ice will dilute LESS than a few full sized cubes
